This is the best scene of any show on television, ever! I watched it the night it was originally broadcast, and I couldn't take my eyes off it! Gave me goosebumps! Part of the reason is the song Nights In White Satin. It brings the emotions home. When I bought the DVD set years later they had taken the song out and replaced it with some lame instrumental music. It just didn't work as well. Even Ken Wahl said that he didn't know why they replaced it. He and Ray Sharkey had great chemistry together, and it shows in the exceptional acting both men did. I have the entire series, but seasons 1 and 2 are the best, with 1 being the greatest of all.
I totally agree with you I have it as well I hated that they did this this segment and Mel profit were the best episodes of the series classics the music plays a big part in the scenes and they screwed it up by replacing that song
The original scene tied so closely to the music, it still brings tears to my eyes. I remember watching this live, watching their friendship explode and the music describing it EXACTLY. I was 22 when this aired and it tore me apart. Unfortunately the money punks will never allow Wiseguy to be released 100% intact. The entire Dead Dog arc is unrecognizable without the music.
October 2022 and this scene is still the absolute best written scene on a television series! I remember watching this with my sister when it originally aired... Not a dry eye in the living room.... The complicated friendship that Sonny and Vinny still stands the test of time!
Very powerful. Great acting. My favorite scene of the series. Watching it again on Roku in 2021.....just wish they had kept "Nights in White Satin".....worth the royalty money in my opinion.
So much emotion..such great acting..This show is as timely and relevant today as it was when it first aired. Ray Sharkey and Ken Wahl deserved Emmys. So glad Ken is a Golden Globe winner.
Reading the comments, we all agree.30 , 40 years later and one still remember this scene. For years I was thinking about Wiseguy and this particular episode. edged in my memory. So happy I found it on RUclips. Been binge watching Wiseguy ever since
I remember watching this episode with my dad ( who passed away on 11/30/2010) it really reminds me of him . this was the best and I mean best show of the 1980's.period.
I love this scene. Such great acting. Love the song playing in the background and it fits the scene so well. Love it when Sonny tells Vinny how are u going to remember this Vinny . How are u going to remember me Vinny. Best scene .👏
I just saw this again, after years. I remember seeing this with my brother, the year it was first broadcast, and feeling a chill down my spine. This was some of the greatest acting on television, and it was all done with the eyes. There is nothing better, no better representation of true, betrayed, desperate friendship. Thank you so much for putting the original soundtrack to it. Profoundly moving
I agree. This stands out in my almost 60 years of TV watching as one of the top 5 scenes. Gripping and so emotional, even if you don't know the compelling story. Such a fantastic show (and great to see Jonathan Banks having so much success).
"Just what the truth is, I can't say any more" My god, could they have timed those lines any better? Absolutely the perfect song for this scene and they can never legally broadcast it
@@hanksballoons The lines of the song say it all. Look at Sonny's face when they're singing.."I love you.." It's speaking volumes , as is Vinnie's. Never put into actual words until the moments just before his death.

It's so Peckinpah (with a hint of Puzo) , in terms of the betrayal between two "friends" who come from the same neighborhood and have the same goals but they have different ways of going about it. It's kismet that Ken Wahl, the late Ray Sharkey, writer David J. Burke, director Rob Iscove and the series's co-creators Stephen J. Cannell (RIP) and Frank Lupo got this scene down to perfection. "Wiseguy" not getting an Emmy, albeit the show itself and Jonanthan Banks both earning nominations, is criminal.
I love this show. Have the dvds. Ken Wahl and Ray Sharkey are so good together. The end is so sad. They portrayed their characters so well. Excellent show.
Catalina Interesting. I read somewhere that disc 4 on one set had Ken Wahl's commentary on an episode and no way to shut it off. And they were Ken's favorite episodes, too!
Greg Palmer I have 4 box sets. Ken Wahl does commentary on each one but not every disc and have no problem with that. My favorites are #1 Sonny Steelgrave & the Mob and #2 Mel Profitt. There is a gag reel on the first box set. Wish there were more. Love the gag reel.
It's absolutely criminal that they didn't pony up the cash for the rights to 'Nights in White Satin' for the DVD release. Hell, even a cover version would've been better than the lame, nondescript, generic music they inserted. Absolutely ruined the scene and destroyed the impact. Thanks so much for posting this gloriously done moment.
The generic music completely butchered the scene. The song basically acted as a script. Without it, the scene is meaningless. I saw it with the generic music first and was confused why it was going on for so long with them just staring and drinking. I mean honestly, just how much does it cost bc you can't have this scene without the original music.
A scene for the ages. Perfection. The nights in white satin replacement music killed the perfection that this scene was. It certainly didn’t improve it.
This was the show back in the day. Ray Sharkey was amazing. this just showed the deep bond between Vinnie and Sonny. Even though they were on opposite sides, they had a love for each other
One of the best 10 minutes in Television History.....Wiseguy Nov. 1987 (CBS)....Ken Wahl and the late Ray Sharkey......featuring Good Lovin' by the Rascals and Nights in White Satin by the Moody Blues....
Totally know where you're coming from. So many 80s programmes were laden with clunky, cheesy dialogue. Then this final scene. You can almost hear the director arguing with nervy producers: "No, really, the audience is intelligent enough. The characters don't need to say anything while the song's playing. Yes, I know it's five minutes without dialogue, but if you look closely, the characters are actually still communicating."
I just started re watching this amazing series. This was a great show especially in the early seasons this scene still hits me hard when i see it what a classic scene why did they have to screw it up by changing the music in it
First time ever watching Wiseguys (loving it, wish the Steelgrave arc had lasted longer!) and just watched this episode on Prime. I'm so disappointed they didn't keep the original music. 'Nights in White Satin' makes this scene far more impactful than whatever rubbish they swapped it for!
I knew I wasn't insane! I was watching this on HULU and they took this song out of it! I saw this episode ONCE when it originally aired over 20 years ago. I never forgot this scene. The song made it powerful and was pretty key to the depth of the emotion of the situation. I guess licensing must have been an issue. Just goes to show that money CAN stifle creativity.
I remember watching this with my sister the day after it aired. I was ten so it was on past my bedtime but she taped it for me. And we we watched it together and we cried so much. Every time I hear this song I think of watching this episode with her.
I saw this scene just by a random chance once about 30 years ago and I've never forgotten it . It was so haunting , powerful and beautiful . Nights in white satin was the perfect music for it.
Only having recently watching Wiseguy, this scene is a stonker. The series is phenomenal with great story lines and actors. Better than half the stuff out nowadays.
I always wondered about the subtext of this scene. Nights in White Satin is a very romantic song, and these two characters were very close. And Ray Sharkey saying "How you gonna remember this?... How youe gonna remember me, Vinny?" And of course Ray Sharkey died later of AIDS.
Supposedly caught through drug usage..It's the subtext in this that really grabs you. You know what they both want to say by their expressions throughout this beautiful song. What fantastic actors. I could have watched both arcs in season 1 stretched out over several seasons.
I loved this show when it first came out and watched every episode. I never forgot this scene out of all of them. I just started re-watching on Roku channel. I couldn't wait for this scene to come up. I was literally shocked when "Night's in White Satin" didn't play! I still can't understand WHY in Sam Hell it got edited out! It was the absolute perfect song to play. Whoever decided to take it out should be tortured endlessly. Thank you for posting the original scene and how I remembered it.
Ray Sharkey is one of the greatest actors ever that is the scene that stands out i bought the DVD set and heard lame elevator music but we can all watch and listen to it the way we did all those years ago thanks to you tube Ray Sharkey is one of the greatest actors ever gone but not we love you you are missed RIP
If you were a fan of the show, and knew the characters, the scene with Nights in White Satin is one of the best scenes ever in movie or TV history. Everything just flat out worked in that scene. Today they heavily modified it by cutting parts and original music, and it is not even close to the original.
It was absolutely sickening that they took the original music out of this scene because it completely destroyed the entire meaning of one of the best television storylines/relationships ever - a story of brotherly love and betrayal. I got burned for $80 when I eagerly bought the DVD twenty years after this aired, waiting in anticipation for this scene, and was horrified at what they had done to it. There should be a law that they can't remove the original scores and songs and basically steal from fans.
@@ThirstyEye It was earlier than that I think but in a way it was his own fault. He fell down some marble stairs in the house of someone else's fiancée!! Said at the time it was due to a motorbike accident because he didn't want the truth to come out. Unfortunately KW allowed himself to be caught up in the "famous" trap thinking he could do what he liked as not constrained by "normal" standards. This even though he always made a big thing of he was only doing it because it paid well, could give it up tomorrow etc. Just a normal guy. And so on. He didn't leave Los Angeles though!
@@wolfieears1984 Rodney Dangerfield's fiance, it was. I'm sure he was embarrassed about the circumstances, but I do believe him when he also states that he did not want to bring negative publicity to that lady and Rodney. And one can slip on stairs anywhere. No, infidelity is not to be celebrated. But *where* this happened is not important.
@@ThirstyEye I'm not saying where it happened was important per se but I'm saying it was RELEVANT to what we were discussing. The original comment was that he "threw his career away" and you replied that he got a serious neck injury as if that hadn't been a conscious thing to do but some random bad luck. And I said it wasn't random as such but a result of him being somewhere he shouldn't have been, carrying on with someone else's fiancée (i.e. risky in more ways than one and not something someone with integrity would do). I love "Vinnie" as a character and I like Ken Wahl but he was far from perfect.
@@wolfieears1984 Fair enough. I don't know much else of Wahl's work, but I'd recommend The Soldier if you've never seen. Rather goofy action film, but some undeniably impressive moments. I finally watched Wiseguy this year, dug quite a bit. But in some ways Wahl to me will always be The Soldier 'cause that's what I first saw as a kid, haha.
Yeah, The Sopranos made me think of Wiseguy. It was sort of ahead of it's time. It might not have had the mafia character as the main guy, but Steelgrave was sort of a prototype for Tony. The bloody, ruthless mafioso whos still was sympathetic.
The best acting I ever saw was this scene. Vinnie and Sonny. I was shocked they killed off Sonny. This was the best episode when Sonny was on Wise Guy.
LOVED this show, especially these episodes with KW and Ray Sharkey,Sad that they could not put this song on the DVD set, i really miss it not being there, thank you for having the orgianal posted, brought back wonderful memories, thanks so very, very much!
Such an iconic show. That first season was perfect. When Nights in White Satin started playing, I teared up.. because I felt what was coming next.. Though violent and horrific, Sonny went out on his own terms.
2:07 "I don't like bein' stared at". OMG, vulnerability off the charts! this scene kills me. Already knows he getting nailed by the Feds, stressed. But his best bud (albeit undercover agent) peers into his soul and he can't take it. Heartbreaking.
one of the great scenes in tv history--really screwed it up on the DVD by taking out the song--the lyrics really mirror the tortured relationship of these two--Wahl was really good. Sonny and Vinny made this series work. Thanks for showing the original ending.
This scene was cut out on the dvd. WHYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!?????? I was transfixed to the set watching this go down. Vinnie and Sonny formed a bond that neither realized was so strong until the end. Nights in White Satin was the perfect song for that moment. They lived the high life, dressing to the nines, wining and dining at the best places. Ah, everything must end...sooo sad. Loved that show. Wish they'd bring back the reruns.
@@nhmooytis7058 I hope he lived a long and comfortable life! Don't know who originally thought of using Nights in white satin in this clip but it was a stroke of genius. You'd have to be as numb as a rock not to feel the communication between these two.
Off the subject of this scene the actor Jonathan Banks was tremendous on this show. When he appeared on Breaking Bad for the 1st time in '09 I told my friends that he was in Beverly Hills Cop and 48 hours, but they didn't realize it and thought it was strange that I even knew his name at 27 years old. Fast forward 9 years to 2018 and he's now one of the biggest and most popular actors on television.
The writers did an excellent job. For nine previous episodes we got to watch Sonny and Vinnie become friends, and then brothers. That's what made this scene so good. They didn't cram their relationship into 45 min, or a two part episode. This scene is raw to anyone who watched the series from the beginning. Sharkey was amazing, and the director was amazing for capturing it the way he did. As a 30 yr-old the 80's are not my era. I didn't even notice the song that was playing on the jukebox until I rewatched this scene on RUclips and read the comments. I cried regardless of the music, that's how good it was. These guys should've won something. It was a TV show for crying out loud! Who puts in this kind of effort for a TV show? Today's writers could really learn a thing or two, even from short lived unknowns like this. In fact, a lot of good stuff came from short lived unpopular shows. These are the jewels of Hollywood! This episode was so raw, I stopped watching the show. I don't know why but I couldn't keep on. It had to end here for me. Maybe later I'll pick it up again.
Wowww, totally didn't see any of this romance stuff until now....I haven't finished watching the first season with my dad, and we're not to this point of the season as it is, but it hasn't ruined anything for me. Just kind of ... changed the way I'm gonna watch it. I'm a happy girl knowing this now, haha.
I just watched this on the Roku channel. They destroyed a masterpiece of a scene by not including the song, The Knights In White Satin. The weight of the moment and the emotional impact was all right there for us to see and feel. I remember being so moved by it and in this recent viewing feeling deprived of something so special. The series was great but the Steelgrave arc was the best part of it. Ray Sharkey and Ken Wahl had a perfect chemistry.
It's almost touching to see them both physically close and climbing up to look out considering they were trying to kill each other only a few moments ago.
(Google)....November 12 1987, mesmerized in front of the TV watching this scene. Initially attracted to Wiseguy as I live in Vancouver; first season unforgettable. Can it keep it up? Only the toes knows... Second season, Memorable. 3rd Season Meh. 4th season? In 1990 we didn't have a term for realizing your favourite show now sucks. May 2 1996 Reunion movie..interupted by earthquake after 5 minutes. Never saw it repeated.. (Glance at sidebar)....Watch? 16 years, That's a long break :)
It warms my heart the way they're fighting one minute and then they get up close together and look out the window like theyre still friends and later Sonny hands Vinnie his bottle to drink from .. lol . Then that beautiful song ...
If you can believe it *fans* put this together. Someone out there used the DVDs but remixed the audio. There are some people whoe really cared about this scene being made whole.
Wise guy was shoot here in Vancouver aslong with 21 jump street, I met Ken wahl, helluva a nice guy, he was at a bar called bar and gril back in 89, me and my buddies sat and drank with him,
I've loved this scene ever since I first saw it, and was so unhappy when I got the DVD to find that different music had been used. So glad you've posted this.
wow, I haven't seen this since it originally aired, but the final scene has stayed with me all these years.. "how are you going to remember me?" and then them looking into eachothers eyes as the song goes "and I love you"... so intense, some of the best TV ever. Do you watch the sopranos? another great mafia show that makes great use of good music.
It has been so long since I watched this scene on TV and like many here- was mesmerized and deeply touched by it. But now I can't even remember what happened in this episode and how it ended. :-(
In the Nights in white satin part of the scene, Sonny keeps his eyes fixed on Vinnie but Vinnie can't hold his gaze, looking away/shifting uncomfortably about 8 times. So although he says "I've made my peace, Sonny"...he hasn't..and actually never will, and rightly so.
Fair warning that the new blu ray re-release not only didn't add the song back in, but they cut out the entire section where the juke box plays. Luckily there is a torrent out there that has all the original DVR recordings from when the show was on air, with all the original music.
First saw this 30 years ago and have never forgotten the effect it had on me. Amazing acting job from both Wahl and Sharkey. Always makes me cry :(.

I cried like a baby when I saw this in the 80s went to school next day everyone said they did too .
Yes I was bummed out about that . It was crazy doing that.
Thank you, thank you for adding the music! It's just like I remembered it - it gives me chills.
Taking this song out of the DVD version was almost like a slap in the face--waiting for it, experiencing the build-up...and then...nothing.
Powerful! I remember it like it was yesterday ❤️ ....and I was so pissed at Ken Wahl for throwing away his career. 😢
Ken suffered a serious neck injury in 1992! Maybe you know more than I, but sounds like he never recovered from the chronic pain.
This scene always makes me sad. RIP Ray 😢🙏
Great scene!
LOVED this show, especially these episodes with KW and Ray Sharkey,Sad that they could not put this song on the DVD set, i really miss it not being there, thank you for having the orgianal posted, brought back wonderful memories, thanks so very, very much!
This is the best show ever, thanks for uploading from beyond the Steelgrave!
Such an iconic show. That first season was perfect. When Nights in White Satin started playing, I teared up.. because I felt what was coming next.. Though violent and horrific, Sonny went out on his own terms.
WOW...I NEVER saw this show...I gotta find it on DVD! It is OUTSTANDING!!! And that Vinnie guy...He is SOMKIN' HOT!
2:07 "I don't like bein' stared at". OMG, vulnerability off the charts! this scene kills me. Already knows he getting nailed by the Feds, stressed. But his best bud (albeit undercover agent) peers into his soul and he can't take it. Heartbreaking.
~Ray Sharkey RIP
one of the great scenes in tv history--really screwed it up on the DVD by taking out the song--the lyrics really mirror the tortured relationship of these two--Wahl was really good.
Music rights. As for reruns, the show's on the Heroes & Icons Channel.
The first "bromance."
keenedge100 yup, just commented above on the homoeroticism.
@@nhmooytis7058 Nah, think of S&H in the 70s :) This was serious stuff though.
@@wolfieears1984 I had a gay cat once.
@@nhmooytis7058 I hope he lived a long and comfortable life! Don't know who originally thought of using Nights in white satin in this clip but it was a stroke of genius. You'd have to be as numb as a rock not to feel the communication between these two.
@@wolfieears1984 he lived to 18, as did his straight bro who tolerated his advances 😺
Yeah, I heard about that. I know that fans played the episode and put back the right song. That is how I came about this clip.
Thank you. I've wanted to see this scene again for years.
It's kinda crazy how far ahead of the curve this show was. This show came out a decade before the Sopranos.
Wow. I love that piece. And thanks for posting it! I have the DVDs, but I haven't had the stomach for watching that scene to see what they did to it.
This is one of the very few Stephen J. Cannell shows I have never seen before, and intend on finding in its original format with the music attached.
I remember right after seeing this episode I went out and bought Days of Future Passed.
They destroyed a masterpiece of a scene by not including the song, The Knights In
White Satin.
God I loved this show. It ended way too soon.
I have never heard this song without remembering this scene. It was the third actor in the room.
It's almost touching to see them both physically close and climbing up to look out considering they were trying to kill each other only a few moments ago.
Remember the 60s Vinnie?
How're you gonna remember this?
How're you gonna remember me, Vinnie..?
I have very fond memories of this show, specially the finale of this storyline :)
A million thanks to whoever did it.
Now THIS was good televison !
Glad to share! I was upset when I heard they had gotten rid of the song in the DVD release.
"how are you going to remember me?"
and then them looking into eachothers eyes as the song goes "and I love you"... so intense, some of the best TV ever.
Do you watch the sopranos? another great mafia show that makes great use of good music.
Yes the song is saying it for them.
exactly as I remember
It has been so long since I watched this scene on TV and like many here- was mesmerized and deeply touched by it.
But now I can't even remember what happened in this episode and how it ended. :-(
I remember taping each show and rewatching it.and I never taped anything!. I now have the entire show on dvd. Nothing comes close to Wise Guy.
taratova I taped every episode too, wish I still had it, a friend has one of those old TVS with a built in tape player and it still works!
Extraordinaire. Vu en août 1997. The ultimate échec song
Definitely one of the most high-quality series of all-time. I feel bad that Mr. Wahl didn't go on to other successes.
Fair warning that the new blu ray re-release not only didn't add the song back in, but they cut out the entire section where the juke box plays. Luckily there is a torrent out there that has all the original DVR recordings from when the show was on air, with all the original music.
