This does seem out of character for Ninja Turtles. Seems like Campbell is using TMNT to share personal beliefs, instead of taking the turtles on fun adventures. It's turned into a nationally published fan fiction.
Yeah, it could've been a great ending. They should've ended at issue 100 and then just publish stand alone stories of the turtles after city at war (something like turtles in space again, etc).
Exactly. This!! Then after Last Ronin Tom Waltz could return for his The Armageddon Game story but that should have been it. They almost canceled it after Sophie wrote like 10 issues but they let her keep it for 50??? Makes zero sense by IDW giving her free reign on one of their most revered and popular books since the selling of Mirage Studios in 2009 and the new series in 2011. It was the one thing that came from the buyout that wasn't stupidly corny and kiddie. Maybe now with Jason Aaron coming this summer they can make Campbell stay far away from the book and undo all her lame trans and lez characters that TMNT did not need at all and ruined Tom Waltz's and co-creator Kevin Eastman's already established continuity.
The IDW origin is strange and super convenient, that was not a good base to start, but it was not the worst idea either. IDW started to create new arcs and new characters, IT WAS INTERESTING and finally we had the best turtles design. But whe Campbell started to introduce her ideas for the storyline, we were witnessing the beginning of the fall of the TMNT IDW comics. A lot a new characters without reason or purpose, discarding the already established bases of this continuity and a big throwback to the story and characters. And curiosly Jennika started to get more prominence (she is a character created by Campbell). All that I said before is the main reason for I cannot read the TMNT IDW comics again, It's disappointing. I hope that we can have a new storyline, like a user said: "I prefer '80s adventure comics to something that pretends to be serious and deep."
What issues does the “woke ” start? I was about to start collecting the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The IDW Collection Hardcover Volumes 1-13 because people said volume 14 and onward after the Kevin Eastman run was where it went down hill. If it’s scattered throughout the entire series then I might reconsider and just go for the Berserk deluxe editions instead.
Campbell is bad, but Waltz is to blame. Everyone pretends like Jennika was Campbell's idea, and that introducing this spunky female trans-turtle was his plan all along, and that Campbell worked with Waltz to inject that into the story... But the thing that's not being said here is that Waltz didn't leave any notes. He didn't have any plans for her. He shoved in a whole new character on a whim, turtle'd her, dropped her in the TMNT's lap, and walked away to leave this rookie artist/writer to figure it out. The planning is fucking abysmal at IDW. The man by and large has defined the worst versions of the turtles. He turn the ninja turtles into pacifists who let their enemies basically get away with their crimes, you know they have become loser heroes. And all the while relying on nostalgia bait to maintain interest with little original elements. His main original ideas were Alopex who is basically an expy of the character Ninjara, Old Hob, and finally those magical god villains. That aside the rest of his run was pure baiting with nostalgia trying to combine the most notable elements of old TMNT media into one series. So once he ran out of material? Not a surprise the entire comic fell apart. You can't rely on "Hey remember this and that!" forever.
Many of the main storylines in the Waltz era were actually good ideas. However, I agree that the execution was flawed, especially with regards to the turtles having a penchant for pacifism. If those same ideas were put in the hands of another team, they could have been executed really well and had the potential to be really great comics. On the basis alone, I won't say that all of the ideas from Waltz were bad. Another thing to consider is the influence of Nickelodeon. It very well could be the case that Nickelodeon was against more overt themes of vengeance and retribution. And we know Waltz has it in him to create stories like that; all we need to do is look at The Last Ronin. If we accept the premise that Nickelodeon did have a strict set of guidelines for the main TMNT comics, then I'd say that Waltz operated within those parameters a lot better than Campbell did. Whereas Waltz at least attempted to create compelling storylines within those guidelines, Campbell's mutant town was not compelling whatsoever. You're right that Waltz did leave Campbell to pick up the pieces that he left behind, but I'd say that it was probably IDW management and not necessarily Waltz himself that made the decision. If it was Waltz's decision, then I would agree that he deserves some of the blame. However, I don't think the Waltz incarnation of Jennika was necessarily bad. Jennika before Campbell was already a fleshed out character. It's not like Campbell HAD to make her a cringeworthy caricature of a lesbian - that was Campbell's decision alone. At the end of the day, Waltz made some questionable decisions, but I don't think it excuses Campbell.
I doubt it. If Viacom is oh so serious about the turtles not killing in the comic which premiered one year before the first Nickelodeon cartoon. How come the cartoon that was funded by Viacom later openly allowed the turtles to kill? Not to mention a cartoon will forever be more accessible than a comic. So more kids saw 2012 Leo holding Shredder's hollow skull after killing him than any of the shit that IDW TMNT did.
