Wonderful! I love the "Godowsky special". There is also a lovely recording by Cherkassky with a "Cherkassky special", where he repeats the final two bars. But, in the repeat, instead of playing the Db/Ab chord, he plays a Db-minor/Ab chord. I love it.☺
It must be said that he was an ultimate master of the musical language; his musical technique is absolute perfection, every nuance is unquestionably 1000 per cent the authentic intentions and sentiments of the composer himself.. It should also be said that his pianistic (finger and note) technique is unsurpassed for sheer mastery. The only other recorded artist that I ever heard in sixty years of intensive listening to have a perfect musical technique at the piano was Rachmaninoff himself.
Jack Gedzelman I'm not convinced you'd be making these statements about this recording if you didn't know who was playing this. Yes, you can hear great tone and a precise technique most of the time, but honestly, the recording quality of this is quite a bit worse than Rachmaninoff's (later) records and you can barely hear what Godowsky is playing in the left hand at several moments in this piece. So I think it's a bit dishonest to conclude that this is the ultimate performance of the piece as Liszt would've wanted it, when there's no clear evidence for it. I think Godowsky's recording of La Campanella is quite a bit clearer, I'd say that G's great playing is noticeable there, but not so much in this one.
couldn't resist adding his own touch to it. Wonderful indeed.

Great playing from a great master of the past!

@@SpaghettiToaster Ok
It’s hard to say this is exactly what liszt had in mind when godowsky didn’t even play what liszt wrote
@@emperialmidnight4479 that is the dumbest statement ever. Liszt made arrangements and improvised on his and many other composers works.
One of the best ever!!!
Too fast.
What do you mean? All of Liszt's students play it within 4-4.5 minutes.
