    I made my first shawl yesterday after 45 + years of crocheting! I never saw the appeal before. Oh my goodness, how wrong I was. They are fun, quick, and don’t use a lot of yarn. I felt unwell when I woke up this morning so I put on my new shawl (which also used a lot of my stash of yarn)!!

    • @TaylorOBrien

      You can but you may need to add or take away rows depending on how tall the stitch might be! If you used a half double crochet it would be shorter than a double crochet so you may need to add rows! Hope this helps!

    • @TaylorOBrien
      @TaylorOBrien  Год назад

      Hey there! If you click the link to my blog in the description box it’ll take you to the written instructions! Under the “supplies” portion it lists - Yarn - 12oz weight 4 (pink and gray shawl is Red Heart Yarn Super Saver & Green shawl is Lion Brand Yarn Heartland yarn)
      Hook Size - US-J(6mm) - so I used about 12oz for a size that would fit a small/medium 😊 hope this helps!

      @@TaylorOBrien Thank you for your reply, Taylor. I saw that, but I'm new at this and don't know how to compare ounces to yards. I guess I'm further behind than I thought. Sorry to take your time. Any advice on how to learn this aspect of crocheting?

    • @TaylorOBrien
      @TaylorOBrien  Год назад

      @@debrabowers4949 ohhh ok! So if you look up the details on whatever yarn you’d like to use, you’ll see it lists the “weight” which is the thickness, I used a weight 4 for this green shawl, then near that it’ll say how many ounces & yards each ball contains. So for Heartland yarn by Lion Brand Yarn, it’s saying it has 5 ounces / 251 yards per ball. This can vary so you can look up the info for the yarn online or if you’re at the store it’ll be on the label! 😊 I hope this helps! 🙏 🧶 ♥️

    • @debrabowers4949
      @debrabowers4949 Год назад

      @@TaylorOBrien Okay, I think I’m getting it. You say your “Malden” shawl takes 12 oz. of a med weight yarn. Your “Live Your Magic” takes 4 balls of 3.5 oz each, or about 14 ounces. Your “Make it Happen” shawl takes “at least 2 balls” of 6 oz. each, so at least 12 oz. Am I understanding right? I was frustrated to have to go to different places to put all these details together. Is a ball the same as a skein? But all I really to know is how many ounces, right?
      Thank you for time. I think your work and your personality are lovely.

    • @basementbats
      @basementbats Год назад +1

      @@debrabowers4949 Let me try to answer your question, sorry it's a bit late! You will either need the weight or length in yards for a project to determine how much yarn you will need- if you're using a different yarn than the one used in the pattern, you just need to get enough skeins to equal or surpass the amount used in the pattern. I prefer to use yardage over weight for this, personally. You can find the yards per ounce (or gram, if that's what's listed) for a yarn when you have both numbers to calculate how much yarn you will need for the project. So in this instance, each skein of the yarn used (yes, basically a "ball" of yarn) is 5 ounces in weight and 251 yards in length. 251/5 = 50.2 yards per ounce, which we multiply by 12 because 12 ounces were used in total. That means that you would use approximately 602.4 yards of a worsted (also called medium, number 4) weight yarn for this project. Hopefully this helps- you can apply this for other patterns if the information you need isn't listed!

  • @SidneyTung1177
    @SidneyTung1177 3 года назад +1

    Hello, do I need to add one stitch when I do criss cross if the criss cross is 3 stitches apart instead of 2 on your video? I’m using size 5 yarn instead of 4.

    • @TaylorOBrien
      @TaylorOBrien  3 года назад

      If you are looking to skip stitches in between the criss cross double crochet you could try chaining 1, then skipping the next stitch and continuing the criss cross double crochet! Or you may just need less chains in your starting chain since you're using a larger weight yarn 😊 Hope this helps!

    Hi,
    Love this shawl, though I am having some difficulty with size. I made sure the starting chain fit my chest, upper arms and back. Since adding more rows, the circumference has increased and I have checked - I haven't accidentally added more stitches. Is this what normally happens? When I put it around my chest, it does not fit, it looks a few inches too big.

    • @TaylorOBrien
      @TaylorOBrien  2 года назад

      Hi Laura! I’m sorry you’re having trouble with your shawl. Depending on the stretch of the yarn you’re using and how loose/tight you chain, these are a couple things that can change the circumference. I recommend chaining a bit shorter than the initial measurement, that way it compensates for the stretch. I hope this helps! 🙏🧶♥️

      Hi there! After you make the first twist you’ll keep crocheting until you are able to slip stitch to close the row. When you are half way through it’ll look like you’re on opposite sides because you need to complete the figure 8 to arrive back at the starting point. Shawl has to be little lose or fitted
    How many chains required for m size

      Hi there! According to Craft Yarn Council woman size charts, size M has chest measurement of 36-38in.You would also need to consider the measurement of the persons upper arms since this shawl lays on top of the outer arm. For the size in this video (I consider it a size small) I chained 111 and the finished measurement was 39" around. My chest measures about 32". Perhaps choose the chest size you feel most comfortable with, then add an extra 8 or so inches to compensate for the arms. Hope this makes sense! 🙏❤️

      Ch 111 for this size but you can customize this by measuring your circumference around your chest, upper arms and back, then chain however many you need to reach that measurement. Enjoy!♥️🙏
