I wish I had lived my adolescence in the 80. It's a strange sensation of having been born in the wrong time, wrong in a decade. I would like to have lived near this season, must have been wonderful for young people.
Thank you Imnotrudy. I tune my guitar like this starting from a normal EADGBE tuning: G (up), A (same), B (down), D (down), E (down), G (up) Make any sense?
Hey my friend and thanks a lot! Much appreciated! Really :) At the time I started my 'project' there really wasn't any SY covers made on acoustic - only a few. So instead of plug into amps and all that I just decided to do it all on acoustic - that way I could really get to the very core of the true SY universe - the beauty of harmonics and noise. I'm just glad you like the videos - keep around, there's more to come :) Thanks!
One of your videos was on the side of my screen in the suggestion box and I looked at the thumbnail of one of the videos and I saw a dude with an acoustic and I had to do a double take. I thought to myself, "What!? An acoustic cover of a Sonic Youth song? This should be interesting." Needless to say, it was very interesting. I've seen a few of your other SY covers and wow! Great job! I really dig your Bull in the Heather cover too. (Those harmonics!) Keep on jammin, man!
thank you - it's a really old school Yamaha western given to me by my father way back in the days, maybe 20 years I guess. But when it have new strings it just sounds like a million :)
pleaaaaaaaaase you haaaaave to show us how to play it ! this song is the reason why i started to play guitar, my ultimate goal is to play it, so pleaaaaaase, you would save my life ! and i also wanted to say that was an awesome cover and it sounds just like the original one ! you're gooooood at it ! love it
@nvanliforp I was born in 86 ... my adolescence was a time not very favorable for really good bands. The fact that helped me meet bands were good friends older than me, and they knew good bands, I was a precocious little girl and I felt good with them. I heard a lot of Nirvana, Smashing and REM and stuff like David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Roxy Music...When we enjoy good music the moments are striking, although not in the decade we would like to have lived.
it's awsome dude,.. this video helped me a lot. to learn this stuff... now I'll try to get purr, diamond sea, the latter seems a little complicated.. . anyway.. great job. buddy. see ya
@mellowtonen - Thanks a lot buddy, appreciated. I guess they just write the tunings down either on the respective guitars or on papers - hopefully haha. Glad you find my enthusiasm pleasing - I've had lots of fun and still lots to come :) Stay tuned. I'd like to see the cover. That would be cool. Thanks again!
@FxHFilms - Hey, and thanks a lot. Appreciated. I haven't made any tabs but maybe you can find them in the SY tab archive. Not sure they match up though. When I tuned into the right tuning, I just watched a lot of live shows (Thurstons part) and a lot of listening to the record. But you're not the first to ask so maybe I should just write it down :)
@nurseslacker - well, I did not use the one used at the official website and to be honest there's so many of them that are really incorrect or does not match up in the end in my opinion. Besides, my videos are not instructions but interpretations or covers. I don't care what's right or wrong.
yeah, deffinitely, and this facilitates the use of alternate tunings, expanding the possibilities. i wish to have a lot of jazzmaster so i can use all sonic youth tunings without breaking my the strings haha
@artdecade1984 - I know how you feel. I use to think that I would have loved listening to SY in like 1988 when this song and Daydream Nation album came out. It's so beautiful.
Haha, yeah me too! Like at least 10 or so each and every one in a very cool tuning. Dammit. I sometimes go down to the local musicshop and try out 3 or 4 of their jazzmasters, re-tune them and sit there like jamming Sonic for several hours until the kick me out haha.
@sheridanj13 - I usually tune both of them down. B down 7 and E down 9. But yeah, it kinda sounds sloppy but it just sounds wrong if you tune them up instead.
Thank you sir. Appreciated. I learned it by trying out Thurstons tuning and from there on I just replayed the song over and over along with a lot of video-watching. It helped a lot. Though my version is not accurate or brilliant I still feel it's ok and has a certain feeling. JM should be cheaper yeah haha. But it's alright. My project is strictly acoustic - for now - but later on it could be fun to just through these songs out on electric. Thanks again.
Hi and thanks a lot my friend. Really appreciated. I didn't get this tab actually. I did know the tuning (I use Thurston's) and along with watching a lot of live shows I puzzled my way through it. Though more and more are asking me of this tab, so I might write it down and put it in the infobox or something :) Thanks again.
@artdecade1984 - I agree. I did some of my youngster-time in the 80's. I was born in 1977 but still I was way too young to get into SY or even really good music at all haha. It wasn't until around 1990 before I really got into music that actually matters. Hendrix, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, R.E.M. - all that jazz :)
Hi juancaceresc and thanks a lot. Billy Corgan? Really :) heh, I must say. Better start my Smashing P. cover period then ;) Thank you for commenting! Appreciated!
I guess there's a certain difference between electric and acoustic and Sonic 'tends' to violate their guitars :) The GABDEG tuning is also the one I consider to be the hardest to sound right. But I usually start out the tuning really low and when all tunes are in place I slightly turn it up to the right tuning (so that the G is where the G actually should be) - it helps a lot to get the right tune from the album or song.
@trabalski86 - Hahaha! Yeah, I know! I'm sorry, I feel terrible guilty! But to calm you down I must say that they both are still alive and well :) Thanks a lot!
never thought that I would hear Sonic Youth this good on acoustic. Even Thurston couldnt see this coming haha, pretty good!
