    I have the same red bellows Brownie 3-A and love it. I collect vintage cameras from the 1800s. That being said, the information you gave was correct in every respect. You are the first on RUclips, that I have found, that actually knows how to operate the old Brownie correctly. Keep up the great work, your knowledge, and humor, are very much appreciated.

    I found one at the thrift store, I didn’t know what it was or how to open it and it looked like many tried to forcefully open it. I thought it looked like something old and special , when I finally got home I looked it up and found this video. Thank you 🙏🏼

    That is the U.S. aperture system used on older cameras. That lens is f/8 to f/45 in modern terms.
    Both systems are the same at f/16 so you can just count your stops up and down from that one.

      Thank you, I didn't know that, much appreciated!

      Thank you for that info! so would the Brownie model with the f7.7 to f45 lens settings on the front of the camera be fairly accurate then?

    • @DonDayR
      @DonDayR 6 лет назад +3

      David, that is correct. Whenever Kodak used the Universal System for aperture markings, the scale nearly always denotes "4, 8, 16, 32" and so on, simply doubling the number for each stop. Also, this scale was used primarily for Rapid Rectilinear (a doublet design) and meniscus lenses (a single lens behind an exposed iris). For lenses based on triplet designs (Anastigmat, Cooke, Tessar, etc.), Kodak used the focal ratio system in which the number represents the proportion of focal length divided by the opening size. American and European camera makers may denote slightly different "standard" stop values (such as 18 instead of 16--go figure), but all systems agree on 16-ish meaning the same relative opening. There is a handy table of comparative values for most Kodak cameras at the end of this explainer article--print and tape that table inside the dropdown base of cameras with the older numbering: randcollins.wordpress.com/2010/01/05/the-u-s-f-stop-system/

    This is a wonderful Brownie 3A video. I envy your studio too. The modern age of virtually mindless digital photography has cheapened the craft to the point of being prodigiously boring.

      There will be more, no worries. I have one favour to ask you. Please don't tell my name to your wife, so she can not track me down and take a revenge for the turn in your relationship after you stepped on the collodion path.

    Good job on this review my man . Well explained. I do medium format reviews also. The only thing I don't like about these older cameras is the slow shutter speed,

    This was a great video, and very informative! Thank you very much.
    do you think that it would be possible to float this camera on a wire and operate it remotly?
    how steady would the camera need to be held to get a good picture?
    thanks in advance, ian

      @BorutPeterlinPhotography  3 месяца назад

      I'm not sure if I understand what you mean by operating on wire, do you mean like remotely triggering the camera? I've made RC trigger for a different camera, it was in about May 2020.

      @BorutPeterlinPhotography I head someone claim that they flew one on a kite and took pictures of the city from high up.
      I am wondering if that would be possible.
      Is it possible to set the controls on the ground, send the camera up to altitude, and snap some awesome pictures?
      Thanks for the reply

    HI, I was wondering if you tried just putting a focussing screen in the back of the camera, leaving it open and focussing like on a big lf camera. I imaginet hat would be much easier to focus than with the range system

    • @BorutPeterlinPhotography
      @BorutPeterlinPhotography  2 года назад

      Sure, that's a very good idea. I've tried it and it works, but you need to load the film or paper of glass plate somhere close to the motif in of course darkness.

    Borut great video! I am following your Patreon page more Brownie videos please! given the Brownie doesn't have a plate holder how do you secure the plate in the back of the camera, do you use some sort of padding?

    • @BorutPeterlinPhotography
      @BorutPeterlinPhotography  5 лет назад +1

      no, it has to be maximum width of 2mm and then you just press and close it. It will be a bit tight, but it's working. THX!

    Hi, where you find the Kodak Brownie Folding 3 A camera (in at least good condition) to the price that you say in this and Wet Plate Collodion Process on a budget (300 EUR camera and chemistry included) videos ? I found, the camera, in good condition only to a high price in USA (I live in Italy, I have to pay the delivery cost, but also the duty and other tax).

    • @BorutPeterlinPhotography
      @BorutPeterlinPhotography  3 года назад

      Well, I got mine from Ebay. I guess after this video the price gone up, since I know at least dozen people that have bought it.

  • @ganzonomy

    the old "double system" on the lens is as follows
    4 = f/8
    8 = f/11
    16 = f/16
    32 = f/22
    64 = f/32
    128 = f/45.
    The #'s on the left are the old USA system, the #'s on the right correspond to "modern apertures" that we use in this day and age.

    @Top Shit Photography I bought one and received it yesterday! Bargain of £37!!! It came with adaptors to shoot with 120 film.... Whoop woop panoramics!!! The shutter stucks at times though. Do you think that I should attempt to clean it... Some WD40 maybe?

    • @BorutPeterlinPhotography
      @BorutPeterlinPhotography  4 года назад +1

      I don't know much about the shutter mechanism. But that said it's a mechanism, I'm sure every watchmaker or camera servis would love to take a look and clean it.

    I have just tried to expose a plate (on F8) but after 10seconds exposure, 20 secs and 30 secs I am getting nothing at all. What exposure do you use on f8 please?

    • @BorutPeterlinPhotography
      @BorutPeterlinPhotography  3 года назад

      Well, check if the shutter is working, then repeat amd and extend the times. Oh, those f numbers were totally different value then today's f numbers. If I remember correctly fully open aperture is about f/11

    • @fitzhughfella
      @fitzhughfella 3 года назад

      Thanks Borut. It’s a mystery, the shutter (on B as T is dodgy) seems to be opening and closing fine. It’s on f4 on the camera which is f8 as you know but every plate is blank. Chemicals in another camera are fine so it’s got to be the camera. I’m scratching my head. Thanks again for the quick reply.
