Unicycle Road Camber Effect

  • Some unicycle tires behave badly on cambered roads. The tire pressure as well as other factors can affect how a tire performs on side slopping roads.
Based on what I can logically justify I believe that the camber effect on unicycles is cased by the difference in the circumference of the tire between the center and to each side of the center. On a level surface where the tire is perpendicular the the surface the differences in the circumference cancel out. When the tire is not perpendicular to the surface the tire is essentially a Truncated Cone shape and that causes the wheel to turn uphill.

I was facing camber on my 29", I figured the tire pressure was way too low. Your video is a good illustration.

You make it look so easy, but I just know I would spend weeks tipping on my head trying to learn this.

You make me wish I still had my old pogo stick.

I had a pogo stick when I was a kid too. Some of the modern ones are amazing and can jump over 10 ft high now.

Yes, I can really feel the camber on my 24" muni on most paved trail road. Solution? Just getting better at pedaling compensation. Stronger to one side and being consistent.

I switched from a 24" qu-ax to a nimbus nightfox and am strugeling very hard with camber for the first two days now. Reading around on forums i figured I need to lower my tire pressure (i was on 50 psi), but your video just answered that question for me. I wonder if you had the same problem with your tire being "thicker" on one side after pumping it up.

No, I did not have a problem with the tire being different on one side or the other. I do know that riders do sometimes favor one side or the other and it seems like it is something they have to work through.

Well, this is a little different subject than usual in your videos, LOL. It would seem you have it figured out. Does it become uncomfortable to ride this long distance?

With a good saddle many riders have covered 100 miles in a day and a few as much as 200 miles. I'm good for a few dozen so far but it is good exercise.
