- I loved this unexpected bit in The Righteous Gemstones but felt that when the audio dips (when Gideon sneaks into the compound) that it took away from the scene a bit, so I took the studio track and merged it in for those clips but then brought back the original episode audio (so you can hear the captive Gemstones singing too).

Sturgill’s vocals are perfect for that track!
This dude sings so good that it had the whole tone of the show change for a second lol made it seem so much more serious and I actually believed they might kill Jesse.

I was expecting it to be Jesse since he’s the oldest. If they chose Kelvin, I doubt there would’ve been any possible redemption arc for the fuckin’ Montgomerys given that they are hardcore bible thumpers and Kelvin is gay.

California's a brand-new game.” Is about ransoming the Gemstones for the Gold that the church owns
The other message I saw in the song placement is a plight of the militia. “All the gold”(from the gold rush) is spoken for. The good old days of simple living, self reliance, and rugged individualism are gone, and there isn’t a payday coming to them. Contrast with Baby Billy’s song earlier in the season. At the same time, the high life isn’t necessarily for them; it saps the body and soul, and isn’t all it’s cracked up to be (“all that glitters is not gold”).
