  • In this video I explain the experimental method and how the combination of manipulation and random assignment can help to eliminate the third variable problem. I also explain why random assignment helps avoid self-selection and bias so that we can assess the role of the independent variable on the dependent variable.

    I have now found my "go to guy" for help with my Psych class. This is my third video and I my is relieved to have more knowledge to make sense of all this independent and dependent and random assignment. Thank you again for easing my stress by your simple and comprehendible tutorials.

    Hi Michael! Thank you very much for the information and presentation!
    I have a topic in experimental psychology. It is about co-creating a research problem with independent variables (minimum 2) and a DV. At least one IV to be manipulated. All variables must be psychological concepts.
    Can you help me with some ideas? Or can you suggest me search sources?

      Hi, is that a minimum of 2 levels of 1 manipulated independent variable, or 2 separate independent variables (a factorial design, or maybe designing multiple studies for the same topic?). Once you're clear on which of these you need to do for the assignment, my general advice would be to focus on a specific research topic first, then read some examples of studies investigating that topic (hopefully a topic you're interested in).
      This will give you some ideas of how researchers have investigated this particular topic and what types of operational definitions have been used for IVs and DVs, as there may be some existing manipulations, measurements, or scales that could be adapted for part of your design and this would ensure you're using established concepts in that area. This will take some research but in the long run it will be much easier than trying to come up with your own. Hope this helps!

    7:52 But the third variable is still present: you control the independent variable so you can see correlation and/or causation with the dependent variable but there are still lots of other variables that act on the dependent variable, no?

    • @PsychExamReview

      This is true, all possible other variables can't be controlled, so the assumption is that with enough participants and with randomization into conditions, differences in other variables that might influence the dependent variable will be similar across groups and will cancel each other out. This balancing is less likely to occur in small samples, which is part of the reason why larger sample sizes are preferable.

    Could you please explain Quasi Experimental Design ?

    • @PsychExamReview
      @PsychExamReview  4 года назад +1

      Sure, a quasi-experiment follows the experimental method with the exception that the difference between the groups of participants is something that is naturally occurring and the researchers can't actually manipulate. Examples would include studies that compare responses from men vs. women, or how responses differ based on nationality, culture, etc.

      I'm not a professor, I've spent about 12 years teaching introductory psychology courses in international high schools in China and in Singapore, in addition to writing and creating other educational content for psychology students.

    is descriptive method in psychology qualitative or quantitative?

    • @PsychExamReview
      @PsychExamReview  2 года назад +3

      Descriptive method refers to collecting information that will describe a situation at a particular time without attempting to analyze relationships or causes, usually through surveys, observations, or case studies. Depending on the way these are done, the data that is collected could be quantitative or qualitative, or could include both. For instance, a survey could use scales to collect quantitative data, or it could have more open-ended prompts that would be qualitative.
