As a Cowboys fan since 1977, I have been lucky to have seen a lot of great players for the Cowboys in that time. Darren Woodson was a great, and very versatile safety. I will always remember him knocking out a scrambling Rodney Peete (then of the Eagles) with a big hit to keep Peete short of a first down. I certainly would not want to be hit by him or Cliff Harris in their primes lol. Awesome video!

Wow, I don't know how you were able to pick them. I watched Mel Renfro as a rookie as well as the other guys. We had ultra safeties over the decades. You could hear the sound of Cliff hitting opponents, way up in the stands. Great job once again!
Thanks for all the research you do for these vids! Great list! Waters and Harris, hard to think of one without the other. Charlie should have gone into the Ring with Cliff. Peanut butter and jelly.
Those ( Waters and Cliff) were really the only picks so far in this series that I probably should have made a tie out of. At the end of the day I just went with Cliff because he's in the hall. But either way great!
I have so many fond memories of watching Cliff Harris and Charlie Waters. It was criminal that it took so long for Harris to make the Hall of Fame. Waters always had the knack of making the big play at the right time in the biggest games, whether he was blocking a punt, intercepting a pass, causing a fumble or recovering one, I always called him the Ram killer because he was usually the difference between the Cowboys beating the Rams, especially in the playoffs, than anyone. Woodson was truly special, and when I saw the Cowboys drafted Overshown in this year’s draft, my first thought was for him to play Strong Safety and then linebacker in the nickel package. Woodson hit as hard as anyone, and was another reason Dallas won so much during the 90’s. Great list. I even wore # 26 in high school because of Downs until Bill Bates came into the league. I then had to change it to #40, who may have deserved honorable mention on this list. But, I am sure if you do a list on Special Teams, my guess is that he’ll be on that along with “The Shark” Kenny Gant.
Thanks for the video. When you said that you often didn't even see Cliff Harris until he made impact, I thought to myself, "The opposing players probably felt the same way sometimes." I would give Bill Bates an honorable mention on this list.
You got me, LC. As soon as I saw the topic, I immediately thought "Who's LC gonna have at 1, DW or 43 (I also had Darren at 1, btw, but I was looking forward to hearing what I knew had to have been a serious internal debate in your own mind. And then? Cliff is 3?? WTH???? Who did I miss??? Started watching in '71, so I had no idea the immortal mel Renfro started as a safety. I only knew him as a TRUE shutdown corner (ask Paul Warfield). In fact, a lot of Charlie's problems when he played corner came from the opposing team refusing to throw to 20's side of the field even very late in his career. Anyway, long story short (if it's not already too late for that), I'd put mel at 2, as well. Of course, he was so great that I'd put him in the top 5 defensive linemen if he even lined up for 1 play with his hand in the dirt, lol. Great stuff, as always!
Thanks David! Yeah Renfro was a legend in both positions. For me it was always a toss up between Renfro and Harris! I ultimately chosed Renfro in the 2nd spot because of his ability to turn the ball over. Although I will say I had a debate with a very knowledgeable Cowboy fan who always keeps me on my toes lol and if I could do it over again I'd probably have Harris in the 2nd spot. You can go look at that debate. Its some where in this comment section under "No Way" post. But Renfro was so underated as a safety. I actually thought he was a better safety then he was at corner back. Always great to hear your feedback David wether it's criticism or praise! You know your football!
Charlie tore up his knee in the Seahawks stadium right after they had installed new artificial turf. 1979, Charlie joined Brad Sham in the booth. In Dec. 1979, against the Redskins in Tx Stadium, Roger threw the game winner to Tony Hill. Charlie told Brad, "You've got to believe, Roger is in there."
When I first asked you to make top 5 lists, this was the list I most wanted to see! Charlie Waters and Cliff Harris are two of my favorite athletes, I wanted to hear your thoughts on where they ranked. You did your usual great job on this one. I actually didn’t realize what a great blitzed Downs was either. Brilliant video!
I liked the Michael Downs choice in yor excellent video. Downs was overlooked because he was not the big hitter (he was kind of skinny) that stuffs runs on highlight films. But he was smart and worked very well in Landry's timed blitz schemes. Also, Downs did not have great linebackers in front of him like some of the other players. That was a major disadvantage. Downs was an excellent player in a "trending down" Dallas era. I guess you could decribe him as "less bulk is more".
I wholeheartedly agree with the "trending down" comment. The luster was fading in the mid 80's. The Cowboys 20 years of consecutive winning seasons ended in 1985. There were no NFC title game appearances after 1982 after making it there 10 times between 1970 and 1982. The 1983 team got off to a 12-2 start. After the "Danny No game" against the Redskins in 83 things steadily went south. After the 1983 season I never went into a season thinking Dallas was a top choice to make the SB in the NFC. Ironically Downs and (Everson Walls) were in their prime at this time. But, since the team was trending down their greatness has been forgotten. I was a big Dallas fan back then and I needed your video to remind me how good Michael Downs was back in the day 😅
Another great video, thanks! I would personally switch Renfo and Harris around simply because Harris played that position his whole career and, I believe was more impactful at it. Renfro was definitely a better all-around athlete and a greater Cowboy overall.
You know whats funny I went through that same thought process in my head for a long time. Normally the player who had the longer career gets the nod. Especially if they were dominant in that time. But Mel Renfro's 38 turnovers ( 32 int, 6 FR) in 6 seasons with 7+ interceptions 3 different times was hard for me to ignore. Unless it was Darren Woodson. But in saying that... this list was so hard 😫 . You wouldn't be wrong putting Harris in the second spot either! Thanks for watching bro 🙏
Michael Downs came to my high school and gave a Q&A for our journalism team (which I was not on but our PE coach let us attend). I remember he said the fine for losing your playbook was $500 which brought gasps from all us kids. The first time I heard of Charlie Waters was when he got injured during a pre season game with Seattle (I didn't start watching football until 1980). I remember his 41st and last interception. "41 for number 41" was how it was called. I remember Cliff Harris but as a youngster didn't know how good he was. Mel Renfro was before my time but I remember the controversy of him being left out of the Ring of Honor and was happy when he was finally inducted.
Dude, every time I think you can't do better you prove me wrong! GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!! It's a travesty Woody is not in the HOF and a travesty that the great Charlie Waters isn't at least in the ring of honor and probably the HOF, hell just the fact that he was big time in the playoffs tells me everything. He' probably the greatest DB not in HOF but I'm unashamedly biased. Renfro is still the Cowboy all time leader in interceptions and Waters is number 3 after retiring over 40 years ago. It's hard to believe there was a day when you had Renfro, Harris and Waters together roaming the same secondary. Thank you for your effort!!!!!!!!
My God Cliff Harris hit like a run away train!!! I liked Randy Hughes in the secondary but not sure he was a Safety, anything from mid 70s to mid 80s cowboys keep the content coming!
Yep Houghes was indeed a safety! Unfortunately he got hurt and was never the same! Was a good player for us in the 70s but if it wasn't for that injury he could have been a legend. Thanks bro!
I knew as you've worked your way towards this list these were the guys. You nailed this list. I'll just add that whenever the Cowboys defense was on the field the guy I most watched was Mel Renfro. His ability was mezmerizing. What I first learned about pass defense came from Mel on TV. FP, your da man.
@@thelogicalcowboy I agree. Just watching him on TV was like watching Gale Sayers, Barry Sanders, Deon Sanders, TD Dorsett, Jim Brown. Those are guys with balls in their hands many times a game. Renfro's movement was equally fluid, smooth, deceiving. It was like a silver ghost on defense. If I could chose an all time Dallas Cowboys Team Renfro would be on it.
@@PlanetEarth3141 People forget he was the first great 3 way player in Cowboys history. He was a running back, speacial teams returner and dB all at the same time at one point in his career! A absolute legend!
@@thelogicalcowboy yeah, cause when I think of the incredible abundance of talent that has worn the ⭐ and name Renfro to such a great fictional team it means just what you say too. Renfro was a nightmare on many levels. Again, like Deon Sanders, almost. Can you imagine both in their prime on a team defense? Wouldn't even be fair.
That Crash had to wait so long to get into the HOF, not to mention Chuck Howley’s absurdly long wait, is a disgrace to the team and game they gave their bodies for. It’s so obvious there’s a anti-Cowboys sentiment with the voters, that it’s ridiculous! GREAT video, it just emphasizes how important an excellent S is to a great D! I saw them all and I agree Woody’s the GOAT! #DC4L
Nice one dude I have to agree with all of them funny thing that Charlie Waters started out as a corner back but with him and Captain Crash made a tandem that could be the best in history Cliff Harris had a nose for the ball and wasn't afraid to take a hit awesome job my friend
This could be a top 10 list.Bill Bates is my honorable mention pick.He might not be as good as the top 5 players at safety,he was a heck of a special teams demon.I hope you do a top list of all around players on defense and linemen. Thanks for another great video.
I'm going to do a top 53 man roster in the near future after this series is over. We'll have a chance to put a lot more on the list! Thanks for watching!
Hard! I know he's not a big fan favorite among the older generation. But you have to go with Roy Williams at 6. In his prime he was a top 3 safety in the league. What would be really hard is the 7th pick! Maybe Bates, Mike Gaechter, Marion, James Washington... we had a lot of great safeties.
I thought that our running backs and quarterbacks list were tops in the league possibly. After watching this I'm now convinced that safety may be our strongest 5D position. We didn't even have time to mention cowboy favorites like Washington and teague
And if you think about Waters Hughes Cliff Harris and Michael Downs Landry had four of the best safeties in the league at that time in the early eighties
You hit it on the nail. I was thinking the same thing! If we made a top 10 list we still would be missing good quality safeties! I cant see any other team with that much depth! Good point Andrew!
For the most part it was easy. Until I got to Harris and Renfro! That one was difficult. If I had to do it again I probably would put Harris in second place. But I'm fine with the order since I can't change it. Lol
Great list😎👍...other honorable mentions imho..Dennis Thurman (also playes cb), Roy Williams, James Washington, ..also gotta love Bill Bates just for the respect he earned over the years...and if Thomas Everett would have stayed longer than the 2 seasons where he was a vital part of back to back super bowl champs..?🤷🏽♂️
I agree with making Michael Downs #5 instead of Roy Williams. Williams could hit, but he couldn't cover worth a shlt, and to me, being able to cover is far more important than "being physical" when playing the safety position. CB Kevin Smith said Williams was oftentimes like "a deer in headlights" when it came to coverage. He just wasn't a good safety, in my opinion. Nonetheless, thanks for making this video! I can tell you work hard on them! 👍
Charlie waters if they didn't have him out of position at cornerback he would had alot more interceptions. Him and cliff Harris best free safety and strong safety I ever seen in Dallas history .cowboys fan since 1967 at 5 years old really lived and died each week age 9 1971 love our Cowboys for life .
Downs and Walls were great together. These guys, all of them, made it possible for Landry to win. Was Landry lucky in his choices of personnel? Yeah for about twenty-nine years.
@@sunshinegarcia3866 I remember being at my dad's elbow reading the newspaper which had front page headlines about the Cowboys losing to the Packers. His disappointment was apparent even to me as a six year old. He worked hard, sometimes two jobs to keep house and home together so he didn't have much time to do anything but watch the games on Sunday. It made me start rooting for the Cowboys with him. Go Cowboys.
Dallas has had so many good safeties in franchise history that you probably could have separated them and done a top five video for both strong safety and free safety.
Superior work. Superior. According to this, Downs and Waters (and Woodson) have HOF career stats. As I kid I revered the Cowboys' D-backfield of Renfro and Cornell Greene (from the Packers). Big fan of ALL listed here, but even I was not aware of those HOF numbers on Downs (that Turnovers stat is mind-blowing) and Waters. Woodson has all the worthy stats and accolades also. They need to open up another NFC East Wing in the museum in Canton.
Charlie never was the same after that swing set hit him in the face and he got a bunch of stitches. If thats what really happened many years ago. Happened in the off season.
TLC I was wondering if you could do a break down on the 90s cowboys dynasty the rise/fall and all of the key pieces like their all-pros and how would you rank them as the greatest dynasty.
Dude that that #5 was savage. Is there like a PR campaign against this guy. those would be game of the week highlights back in the day or like the turning point play for teams nfl films makes For what it's im a bears fan and honestly cause of ditka have a soft for the Cowboys. they retired his#89 against the Cowboys come to think of it lol. im pausing at Waters game against well if it even can be called a game. Ditka kicked the Bears ass on the Dallas staff that day so, yeah footbal.
Roy Williams has to be on there. D. Woodson said Williams first 5 years was the best defensive player hes ever seen. He said he made more game changing plays and he said he made people fear coming across the middle of the field.
To me D.Woodson is the ALL TIME GREATEST Safety the Cowboys have had. Can’t wait for Woodson #28 to become a Hall of Famer. I feel that he should have been in already, but they snubbed him his year because they were putting in so many Cowboys in this year’s class. Hopefully next year they will put him in.
This list is extremely hard because we haven't had the great safety in decades. Our current guys are just good players and we've yet to have a new age safety, TE or DT geeeeeeez
Maybe some videos about best defensive coordinators? Dick Nolan, Ernie Stautner, Dave Wannestedt, Butch Davis, Rod Marinelli, Zimmer, Wade Phillips, Dan Quinn, I'd even throw in Dave Campo! And let's not forget the coach who invented the 4-3 and the Flex Defense...
@@davidhickey1830 I already did top 5 tackles. So next up top 5 best gaurds and center's. Like you said I should have separated the safeties like I did the line!
The story goes that Gil Brant discovered Cliff Harris while scouting a running back from Hawaii. A skinny kid kept tackling him who ended up being Cliff. There were a few times Cliff is seen tackling Walter Peyton. It was dumb for any player tackling Walter he being one of the few players singled out as being beyond tough by Randy White. Charlie Waters was the Sean Lee of the safeties without all the injuries. Cliff gave up his head and Charlie used his. Didn't Woody and Roy Williams play together?
Of course, all of this is subjective which is part of the fun, but..... I love Michael Downs, but he was a Free Safety and not a strong safety in Landry's system; those are two different things. Free safety could be manned by a rookie, Cliff did it in '70 and Downs did it in '81. Strong safety was a much more complex position in Landry's scheme, and I don't think anyone did it better than Cornell Green. He only did it for 5 years after switching from CB at the age of 30, but he still made the Pro Bowl twice doing it. I've probably said this before, but he is the reason Charlie Waters was playing CB and not safety , Waters' more natural position. Green kept Charlie on the bench so to speak- and Charlie Waters was great at Strong safety. Also, look at the team defense sats for Dallas through the Landry year. Dallas' defense was awful for the years 1980-1988. They had a line and an MLB and not much else. My point being , that Dallas' secondary was horrible when Downs was there- that's why he made big plays on blitzes, cause Dallas' secondary, including Downs, was slow. After Dallas lost Kyle, the flood gates opened. Prior to that, from 1970-1978/9 , Dallas secondary was decent to great, and it was at its best when Green was playing SS.
Thanks for the research & video, as always. I have to respectfully disagree with your rankings, however. My top five safeties in team history are: 1- Harris 2- Woodson 3- Renfro 4- Downs 5- Waters
Logical, you should have broken down by Best Strong Safety and Best Free Safety, that way you could have fit in everybody! Best SS: 5) Bill Bates 4) Roy Williams 3) Michael Downs 2) Darren Woodson 1) Cliff Harris Best FS: 5) Mike Gaechter 4) James Washington 3) Cornell Green 2) Mel Renfro 1) Charlie Waters Also, Downs was not drafted in 1981, he was UDFA (along w his fellow UDFA defensive back teammate Everson Walls)
@davidhickey1830 Cliff Harris wasn't a strong safety, Mike Gaechter wasnt a free safety, Michael downs wasn't a strong safety and Charlie Waters wasn't a free safety.
Cliff Harris and Charlie Waters were a dynamic duo when I was a teenager in the late 70s. They were awesome and were an important part of the DALLAS COWBOYS dynasty. Waters played the position with intelligence and finesse and Harris played like a cold-blooded assassin! That's perfect for a defensive backfield. Cliff Harris was the type of player that you will never see in the NFL again! That's why I've lost interest in the game.
Great Stuff but u didn't give Thomas Everett or Brock Marion no Shout Outs James Big Play Washington. C'mon 🤔🧐💬🧐. Great Showcase on Michael Downs I forgot how underrated he was. Roy Williams first season as a cowboy rookie was sensational. Then, Roy got caught up too much trying make the big hit. His coverage suffer for it
Because of time I stay away from verbally shouting out all players who are honorable mentions. As you can tell the video was already long. What I try and do is put a highlight at the beginning of the video. That's my shout out. If you go back to the video you can see highlights of those safeties that you mentioned at the beginning of the video. Thanks for watching 🙏
Michael Downs was a undrafted free agent just like Everson Walls in the same year 1981. Cornell Green should have been on this list and in the Cowboys Ring of Honor.
Yeah I adressd that in the comment section already. It was a mistake on my part. I have no idea why I said it. lol As for Green, in my humble opinion he does not belong on this list. He only played 3 seasons as a elite safety. The other 2 which was the last seasons of his career wasn't as great. Keep in mind when he played safety it was outside of his prime. I do have him on the top 5 list as a CB. If you want to check it out here's the video... ruclips.net/video/PXk3RLuZQhI/видео.html
@@thelogicalcowboy Not trying to change your mind but you are wrong. 5xPro Bowler 1965-72 as many as Woodson more than Waters&Downs, 3xAll Pro more than Waters&, Downs. He scouted Cliff Harris for the Cowboys as an active player 1970-1972, Played SS well enough from 1970-75 keeping Harris and Waters sharing FS. Went to the Broncos years later scouted and developed All Pro S Dennis Smith and Steve Atwater. He played no Football before the Cowboys a UDFA being a 2x All American basketball player (drafted by NBA). Should be in the Ring of Honor at minimum and definitely top 5 on the S list.
💯+ Darren Woodson not being in the Hall of Fame is total 🐄💩. Woodson was better than John Lynch and LeRoy Butler who are in. It has become like Drew Pearson not being inducted in a timely manner despite being the clutch receiver of the game during the 1970s where the passing game was much harder.
How Harris is in the HOF without Charlie Waters is a real head scratcher. Waters should of been inducted long time ago. Sometimes I think the Hall of Fame committee is a bunch of morons
You've got the right 5, but I'm sorry, Mel, Cliff, and Charlie (in whatever order you choose) are ahead of Darren. Maybe not by much, but Woodson played in an era with far more nickel and dime coverage than the '70s Cowboys did. Basically, Charlie ran the show on defense (after Jordan retired), and that defense was one of the two or three best in NFL history. Charlie is so underrated, it makes me sick.
All of these gentlemen should be in the Hall of Fame. Exemplary careers all.

Bates was special! Thanks for watching bro!
I got Harris and Waters' book back at Christmas. They were absolute killers. Great list and Im always looking for the next one.
Wow! Thanks for sharing that! Thanks for watching!
They wrote a book together? Or there’s a book about them?!? I must find and read this book!
Charlie Waters would have had even more impressive career numbers if he hadn't missed all of the '79 season due to a torn knee ligament.
@@Gman-qm6bv good reply
Cliff Harris was like the Cowboy's version of Jack Tatum.
I agree! Thanks for watching 🙏
Lifelong cowboys fan, we had great safeties throughout the 70s 80s 90s amd today . Charlie Waters in my opinion is number one
I can understand why! Charlie was a legend! Thanks for watching! 🙏
Thanks Chris!! 🙏
I just started this and Darren Woodson better be on here.
Great summaryTex! I agree Downs had Eugene and that was it! To your point he probably was one of the smartest safeties in history. Thanks Tex!
Downs looks like he would excel in todays game.
Thanks for sharing bro!
Thanks CJ!
Thanks bro!
Great list! If you ever do a hardest hitting defender I would pick Harris an Bates as 1 and 2.
That's a great idea!!
Great video always coming thru with fire content
Thanks!
Thanks PE! Your the man as well! Thanks for your support!
Renfro to me is the greatest overall defensive back in Cowboys history! He was legendary in two different positions! You can't get better then that!
@@PlanetEarth3141
People forget he was the first great 3 way player in Cowboys history.
Love the video ❤
Thanks Stanley!
One thing you left out; Cliff Harris was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020.
Yep! Thanks for watching 🙏
#DC4L
Yeah it's a shame Howley has dementia! Hopefully he can remember. Thanks bro 🙏
Nice one dude I have to agree with all of them funny thing that Charlie Waters started out as a corner back but with him and Captain Crash made a tandem that could be the best in history Cliff Harris had a nose for the ball and wasn't afraid to take a hit awesome job my friend
Appreciate you!
Thx, Michael Downs is somewhat overlooked on the goat list, but had a great career.
He sure did!
This could be a top 10 list.Bill Bates is my honorable mention pick.He might not be as good as the top 5 players at safety,he was a heck of a special teams demon.I hope you do a top list of all around players on defense and linemen. Thanks for another great video.

Nailed the list, I’m curious if this was a top 7 list who would be 6 and 7.
All these guys were great.
They truly were! Thanks for watching
You should make a video about underrated CB kevin smith
Coming up! Thanks bro!
Give Donovan Wilson a couple more years and he could move onto the list!
I completely agree. The guy is a stud!
Hard but a great list
Thanks Stanley!
What’s noticed is the cowboys players at every position probably have 1 in the top 5 in probably every position
True! Thanks for watching!
@@andrewkinkel4773
Hughes was a monster! Only if he never got hurt! A legend in the making!
@@thelogicalcowboy and we didn't even have a place in the top 5 for maybe the favorite cowboy ever Bill Bates

Exactly!
Good job, although this was an easy assessment! I agree with your order!!
Thanks Larry for your continued support! 🙏
Two legendary players on and off the field! Thanks for watching 🙏!
Downs and Walls were great together. These guys, all of them, made it possible for Landry to win. Was Landry lucky in his choices of personnel? Yeah for about twenty-nine years.

He worked hard, sometimes two jobs to keep house and home together so he didn't have much time to do anything but watch the games on Sunday. It made me start rooting for the Cowboys with him. Go Cowboys.
After he busted up his leg in 79. For the rest of his career he played on one leg. Amazing 👏
Dallas has had so many good safeties in franchise history that you probably could have separated them and done a top five video for both strong safety and free safety.
Yep I probably should have. That would have been better. I'll probably do it sometime in the near future. Thanks Gorn!
Completely agree! Dallas has some of the most underrated Safeties in history! Thanks for watching 🙏
Charlie never was the same after that swing set hit him in the face and he got a bunch of stitches. If thats what really happened many years ago. Happened in the off season.
Wow! Never heard of that.
Michael Downs and Danny White are the most underrated players in Cowboys history period.
Big fan of Charlie Waters, but my favorite safety has to be Woodson. Luvd the way he played the game.

Charlie Waters was my idol as a kid
darren gets into the hall in 2024. charlie deserves to be enshrined as well.
Roy Williams has to be on there. D. Woodson said Williams first 5 years was the best defensive player hes ever seen. He said he made more game changing plays and he said he made people fear coming across the middle of the field.
Could you imagine building a team of the all time best Cowboys. I'd pay to watch that.
Charlie Waters belongs in the Hall of Fame
He sure does!
I agree bro!! Hopefully Wilson will be that guy! I'm a huge fan of the kid! Thanks for watching 🙏
Jus thinking, best offensive linemen would be kind of boring. I'd definitely watch, but still. Best placekicker?

I already did top 5 tackles. So next up top 5 best gaurds and center's. Like you said I should have separated the safeties like I did the line!
@@thelogicalcowboy I'm going to watch that one now, we've had some great tackles!
Yep! I believe they played together for two seasons!
Woody also play kick off return if you did not mention.
He sure did! One of the best speacial teams tacklers in franchise history!
Walls is my all-time favorite Cowboy, Downs #2

Nice list but I would’ve either put Waters at #3 or have Waters and Harris tied for #3
Yep could've been done either way! They both were legendary! Thanks Appollos!
My top five safeties in team history are:
1- Harris
2- Woodson
3- Renfro
4- Downs
5- Waters

Cliff Harris and Charlie Waters were a dynamic duo when I was a teenager in the late 70s. They were awesome and were an important part of the DALLAS COWBOYS dynasty.

How Harris is in the HOF without Charlie Waters is a real head scratcher. Waters should of been inducted long time ago. Sometimes I think the Hall of Fame committee is a bunch of morons
An embarrassment of riches...
You've got the right 5, but I'm sorry, Mel, Cliff, and Charlie (in whatever order you choose) are ahead of Darren. Maybe not by much, but Woodson played in an era with far more nickel and dime coverage than the '70s Cowboys did.
