I used to love this song so much when I was 20 or so, but now after understanding Jazz, I think I finally get this track's real intention. This is amazing.
His right hand is on what's called the crossfader. It controls the volume balance between the two turntables. For scratching, the crossfader typically acts as a sort of on/off switch for the sound being scratched (in this case, the trumpet sound on the turntable to his left). When the crossfader is in the middle of it's path, we hear the sound from both turntables equally. Pushing the crossfader to his right = trumpet sound off, to his left = trumpet sound on.
I don't know much either, but from what I do know, I believe he has the backing track on a vinyl on the right deck and the lead trumpet on a vinyl on the left deck. And he is manipulating the lead trumpet vinyl to create the awesome trumpet you hear, He also changes the balance between the two tracks loudness to get distortion effects. (the slider in the middle) Someone correct me if I'm wrong of left anything out.
Much of the distortion effects comes from how he's speeding up and slowing down the platter. He uses several techniques, including dragging his finger on the outer ring of the platter where the rpm dots are (2:13), and using friction from his index finger on the inner part of the record to create a vibrating effect (2:21). The different notes of the trumpet come from the original sample, and also from switching the deck speed from 33/45 rpm he changes the pitch (1:02). And at one point, turns the platter off (2:34) and just pushes the record. The crossfader is usually set to a 'quick cut' so that when its all the way to one side or another you hear only one record, and any position in between you hear both records at full volume.
In the day and age of stadiums filled with iphone dj app crazed adolescent dubstep shows, interpretation defeats autotune, execution defeats hourly bills of big studio productions and an industry built on the tears of kids left out of their "highly anticipated music savior" rsvp is again time-proof defeated by a true artist craftsmanship. Not saying old school is better, saying that better is undeniable, and there are still people doing it weekly in small venues near you. Vinyl remains king.
his operating the crossover - which means his switching the channels betwen the two turntables, it's not as easy as it looks and requires some skills ;]
Nah man, it's supposed to be horrible. Nobody is ever supposed to like it... NOBODY!!! GOD WHY ARE WE ALL SO STUPID!!! EVERYBODY STOP LIKING IT!!! CAN'T YOU SEE WE ARE DOING IT WRONG!!! SO MANY OF US LIKE IT AND NONE OF US ARE CORRECT!!!
