I started learning watercolor 20+ years ago with super cheap materials. Eventually, getting nicer materials. But I was precious about using the good paper, so I used canson. I live on a farm and converted an old building into an art studio. First year it flooded. My portfolio of my 20 years of paintings got soaked. Broke my heart! I tried to dry and save as much as I could. The paintings on canson were mush. I was able to save the paintings on arches. That convinced me to use the best paper I could.

OMG KRISTY!! I AM EXCITED!! Per your recommendation, I order academy watercolor(5x7 cold press) to try out and it is AMAZING! I will ALWAYS love arches but I found my self never just practicing or playing so I was hoarding my paper, too afraid to “waste” my expensive arches paper. I even tried to use cellulose and I just could NOT get it to work for me, BAD feeling to painting on it. This academy paper is Amazing!! It’s so close to how my pigments work on arches!! Thank you thank you for sharing, you’ve seriously changed my watercolor life!!
Oh yay!!! I always worry that others won’t experience my recommendations the same but I felt suuuper confident about this one. Like seriously if I were given a sheet of each it would be really hard to decide which was arches!!!

And I’m not sure anyone would understand until they’ve been painting for a bit. Everything just feels RIGHT. Everything flows right. And So far, I can layer without it turning to MUSH and pilling. Finally able to sit down and watch this video. Was not able to watch it for a couple of days. Lately I have been using mostly gouache and combining it with the arteza brand watercolor sets. Academy is fantastic paper.
I have promised myself to dive deep in watercolor this year, and one goal is to play, another is to allow myself to make mistakes, and make a lot of them! These are my main goals for 2022. Now, I have watched a couple of your videos, and I must say, your organizing (or rather REorganizing) your sets/tins, really intrigue me. At first I was kind of "offended", bc you dared to do different than other people I have watched. Now I am getting the playfulness and the calm that might come with my "own" setup. I need to take this next step, and take "ownership" of "my" ideal set/tin. I need to let go of the frames that have been set for me. Better learning that way, I think. Thank you for that. I am also wanting to make my own pastels. Do you have any tips on colours to make? Maybe some light peachtones, some different types of grays?? Hug from Curious Katla in Norway
Yea indeed. I do all sorts of things “wrong” by many standards but blazing my own path, finding a Rhythm that suits my personality gives me momentum and walked me up excited each morning. If my weird ways cause me to feel stifled or stagnant well then it’s time to level up or change but until then, I’m a fan of blazing my own trail in this wonderful world of watercolor!

I enjoyed this video very much. I started on the canson paper. It's rough to tell if the problems you're experiencing is you or the paper. I fell in love with bee paper cotton paper which is really affordable but unfortunately just to hard to buy anymore as it always seems to be out of stock. I've been buying the Strathmore ready cut 100% cotton paper as it's affordable to me and I really enjoy it. I love the Kuretake paint set. I started with the sakura koi which I originally loved but I noticed the longer I used it the more I noticed the chalkiness and the paint cracked in the case.

I love Komorebi palette so much, it really helped me to get into joyfull painting, neon colors are fantastic, now I can't imagine painting without them. Hi! I just started watching your videos and I totally enjoy them. I started watercolor this past year (retired!!) I have a number of brushes I like, but do not have the 1/4 dagger you mentioned in this video. I went to Amazon, but all I could find was your set. I don't want to buy another set, but would love to buy the dagger. Do you sell them singly?
They’re both good, personally I prefer BAOHONG Artists to BAOHONG Academy, but is also more expensive. (But even Academy is better than A LOT of watercolor paper on the market.)
The brand is Baohong, Artist is their professional line, Academy is their student line. I tried Academy only and loved it, heard artist is as good as Arches.
Regarding the Academie paper, I looked it up and it is really not cheaper than Arches. Through your link, 9 x 12 for 20 sheets is $30.00. Arches 9 x 12 is 19.00 at Blick and $ 23.00 on Amazon for 12 sheets. Not a significant difference at all about .10 cents per sheet. Regarding the Canson, when I first started I was using this paper and almost quit because I was following people using Arches and just couldn’t do what they did and I didn’t understand why until I switched to 100% cotton paper like arches or others. Just sharing the starters struggle.
So question to clarify…are you comparing to Arches pads of paper or Arches block? I’m comparing to Arches block as this is their professional paper. The pads in my experience are a vastly different paper and act more like Canson or Strathmore. Love this convo! Thank you!!!

@@KristyRice both really. I have only been watercoloring (that's not a word) for about 8 months so i try everything right now. I am going to try the 100% cotton paper again.
The Amazon link for Academy watercolor paper brings up an error page. ☹️ I'm not seeing any Academy brand paper when I search, either. Lots of different brands saying they're academy grade, though.....🤷🏼♀️
If you don't mind me asking would you think these work well with dry on dry I'm very much into realistic detailed or realism work from animals to nature and botanical watercolor but do you think these work well in that art style or technique would they be better or just as good as Cotman i really want to buy the Windsor and Newton professional but they are just not budget friendly right now please give me your advice

I hope you see this, I know I’m late to the party! I have a weird question. I’ve been using that cold pressed academy watercolour paper for a little while now and I wanted to try the hot pressed and rough so I ordered those. I’ve noticed a weird smell when I wet the rough paper, have you experienced this? It still performs well (this paper is amazing!) but I just want to know if anyone else has experienced this?
@@KristyRice hmm not moldy, it’s a bit like wet dog smell but not as pungent. I didn’t think this would be a conversation I’d ever have 😂 Maybe the sizing has gone a bit bad? 😬

So is the Canson XL a 100% cotton paper? I was looking at a small Canson spiral pad 100% cotton , but now doubting that after this. But the Canson is already expensive for my budget. What do I do now? 😳
Just use the canyon xl for now. It's not 100% cotton but I personally prefer it over arches ( correctly pronounced arsh some say 🤔) to each their own. Try what you can when you can and then decide just have fun 😀 also canson heritage is a nice 100% cotton paper.

Thank you for the video! What is the difference between cold pressed, hot pressed and rough? I’ve heard you talk about cold pressed before.
Hot is smooth, cold is textured and rough is rough :) Working on a massive video coming soon!

I have painted on all of these papers. Everyone raves about Arches and I just can't get the feel of it. I can control the canson so much better.
So interesting. Do you paint a lot of juicy wet on wet or more controlled layers that dry in between?
@@KristyRice both really. I have only been watercoloring (that's not a word) for about 8 months so i try everything right now. I am going to try the 100% cotton paper again.
The Amazon link for Academy watercolor paper brings up an error page. ☹️ I'm not seeing any Academy brand paper when I search, either. Lots of different brands saying they're academy grade, though.....🤷🏼♀️

If you don't mind me asking would you think these work well with dry on dry I'm very much into realistic detailed or realism work from animals to nature and botanical watercolor but do you think these work well in that art style or technique would they be better or just as good as Cotman i really want to buy the Windsor and Newton professional but they are just not budget friendly right now please give me your advice

Hmmmm that’s an interesting idea :) I’d have to get approval from my publisher!
@@KristyRice If not posted to your website, what about an Etsy storefront so your entire books can be downloaded as PDFs, or single pages? There are coloring book artists who make pages and books available by download. I look for them all the time on Etsy. 😊
@@sassybanjo3586 oh you mean my watercoloring pages, got it! I have those here… not for download but these are additional artwork pages you can purchase printed on watercolor paper, none are seen in my books :)

I hope you see this, I know I’m late to the party! I have a weird question. I’ve been using that cold pressed academy watercolour paper for a little while now and I wanted to try the hot pressed and rough so I ordered those. I’ve noticed a weird smell when I wet the rough paper, have you experienced this? It still performs well (this paper is amazing!) but I just want to know if anyone else has experienced this?
Sooo can I ask… is the smell kind of moldy? 🤨
@@KristyRice hmm not moldy, it’s a bit like wet dog smell but not as pungent. I didn’t think this would be a conversation I’d ever have 😂

So is the Canson XL a 100% cotton paper? I was looking at a small Canson spiral pad 100% cotton , but now doubting that after this. But the Canson is already expensive for my budget. What do I do now? 😳
Just use the canyon xl for now. It's not 100% cotton but I personally prefer it over arches ( correctly pronounced arsh some say 🤔) to each their own. Try what you can when you can and then decide just have fun 😀 also canson heritage is a nice 100% cotton paper.
You might try Aquabee by Bee Paper. Super affordable.
