  • Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo ThinkCentre M90c Nano, a NUC Windows 10 PC that’s part of Lenovo’s M Series Tiny line of diminutive desktops. With a footprint not much bigger than an iPhone 11 Pro Max, the M90n Nano is as capable as any Ultrabook laptop. It’s available with Intel 8th gen quad core CPUs up to a Core i7, and Intel vPro is an option. It has up to 16GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM, M.2 NVMe SSDs, TPM 2.0 and a host of ports including two USB-C Gen. 2 ports, 4 USB-A and a full size DisplayPort. We use it connected to a 4K LG monitor via that DisplayPort.

Should I get the M90n-1 or the Raspberry PI 4b?
My main uses will be as my external HD to download my photos and videos and to run the qDSLR Dashboard server to control my cameras (that requires Linux).
With the Raspberry, it seems much cheaper, but when I add the 8GB option, the enclose (though there are slick 3.5" touchscreen ones for $25), a good quality USB HD enclosure that will be limited to 3.0 speeds and the M.2 SSD and the microSD card.
In both cases, the idea is to use a smartphone with HDMI capture adapter and a foldable Bluetooth keyboard with touchpad. Would power the setup with the TP-Link 20.000 mAh in both cases.
Or should I forget about those options and go with a small laptop instead?

Lisa, if you have a stripped screw in plastic, sometimes you can slip a thin piece of metal or stiff plastic between the pieces and cause enough of a bind on the stripped threads to unscrew it. There's another way, rather unconventional though. Use a soldering iron on the head of the screw just enough to slightly melt the plastic around the screw threads. Be patient and let it cool all the way down. Then take a can of liquid air turn it upside down and chill the screw head. The sudden temperature drop helps release any plastic that has stuck to the screw. Very carefully use a new, undamaged, proper size driver, and without applying any downward force, unscrew the fastener. You can also mix a little baking soda and water into a thick paste and coat the end of your screwdriver very sparingly, then let it dry. The grit from the baking soda will help fill any gaps between the driver tip and the inside of the screw head and also help keep the screwdriver from slipping out.
If you know a serious engine builder, borrow some cloves valve lapping compound from him. Use that instead of the baking soda slurry.
I love your videos and reviews and hope this helps you. I have over 50 years of experience in manufacturing custom laboratory equipment. For fun, I also build custom parts for cars motorcycles and boats along with special tooling. Not as much anymore though, getting too old.

The biggest use case in a business environment is to use them a thin access clients. That is a single remote desktop kiosk, connecting to a virtualised VM environment like citrix, RDP, and or VMWare. Else display kiosks is also another. For most consumers, you may be better served by one of Lenovo's Tiny ThinkCentres. Some of the Tinies have GPUs built, in and are quite beefy as a low spec workstation.

It would be interesting if they combined the Nano and keyboard like the Atari ST or Commodore 64. It would allow more room for cooling, and make a nice family PC, connected to the family HD TV. Offer an optional external GPU/HD expansion kit. It would have to have a thunderbolt port though.

Wow, impressive. But I wonder if another computer that was twice the size (which is still very small) but much cheaper wouldn't satisfy most people in a desktop environment. You can still shove it into an unused corner, behind your monitor or under your desk without it using up any workspace.

I like it. I would think if they had just added a second display port, that would met almost any business requirement. More and more frequently, two LCD/monitors are required now. Most people need to live with at least one application open all the time (Outlook, e-mail, scheduling, whatever) and another area (LCD) for their actual work (word processing, spreadsheeting, business apps, etc.). Other than that, I think this is the perfect mini/micro PC for business. Probably meets the needs of most home-based users as well. Perfect for the front reception desk and for mom!

If you look on the thumbnail, you'll see the included USB-C to DP adapter for a second display. It can run two displays, or better yet if you get a newer monitor that supports power and display over USB-C it will take power from the display and put DP back up the cable to the monitor.

Jake Sullivan this one has a previous generation Ryzen 3000 APU that only has four cores. Zen 2 for mobile just got released at CES, so I’m pretty sure it’ll take a little while

Jake Sullivan I know it’s confusing, but the 3000 series Ryzen APUs (CPUs with integrated graphics) no matter if it’s mobile or not, are based on Zen+, which only had quad cores for these types of processors.

Have you calculated its volume instead of its thickness? I argue that the NUC (K, not the H) occupies less space. And that would be with the antennae inside.

Gone are the times you could even buy a Mac mini for 500$. Yeah they weren't that expensive a few years ago.

I think you're having a "I remember back in the day when" moment. Macs were about the same price back then as they are now. The last time a Mac mini started at $500 ($499 or $650 adjusted for inflation) was fifteen years ago before they went to Intel processors. Then they jumped to $599 or about $750 adjusted for inflation. Today they start at $799 or about $50 more than the first Intel models.
