It's so funny because when I first saw the episode, that is exactly what I thought of when he said the line..."man he sounds just like Luger." And then the punchline came! So great...a lot of real humanity in this show.

My personal favourites were the very rare episodes with both Fish and Dietrich.
Abe Vigoda left Barney Miller for his own sitcom, Fish, available on RUclips.
An episode from season one guest stars Dietrich.

4:33 this part made me laugh really hard because I just love the expression on Barneys face. lol 😂 It just screams: “what the? Where is that coming from?”. Truth be told this is one of the greatest scenes in this show. I was born in 93 but I love watching old TV shows like this. Barney Miller is my favorite comedy 📺 show.

the episodes with dietrich are the best. i got tired of fish and the constant references to his age and health. dietrich, with his intellectual and dry sense of humor was refreshing, and his 1-liners were the best...

One of the best things about this show is how realistic and human the characters were. They all had their quirks but were believable cops. Barney was a fantastic captain! He was one of those bosses that was tough but fair, cool and compassionate yet authoritative and was clearly in charge. Not everyone is lucky to have a Barney as a boss.

Notice how "failure" is internalized in the 80's
    "I'm not good enough"
    Today....it's
"Help, Help...I'm being repressed!...come and see the violence inherent in the system!"

The board where they pegged in and out is now in the Smithsonian. I think Jack Soo's badge is there too, if I recall correctly.
Even though it was a comedy, the show maintained just enough of that gritty vibe of NYC in the 70s. Or maybe it was just typewriters on the desks instead of computers like today!

How fitting to Barney's story is the song the trumpet player is playing. It's "I Can't Get Started" by Vernon Duke and Ira Gershwin.
    The song opens with this:
I've flown around the world in a plane
    I've settled revolutions in Spain
And the North Pole, I have charted
Still I can't get started with you.

I also enjoyed watching Welcome back Kotter and All in the Family and several other great well written tv shows created by some great minds out there. The cast of this show were all fantastic actors and delivered their lines perfectly. Thanks for sharing a moment in time and a classic ? TV show.

I really relate to Barn's problem in this episode. I, myself have failed 3 times at getting a particular better paying job. After the 3rd time, I felt much the same way he did. You feel like you've been hit by a ton of bricks and you wonder if it's all worth it.

“Barney Miller” was a hoot to watch. From what I’ve read real Detectives pretty much thought highly of this show. My favorite episode was “The Hero”. One of my favorite scenes in another episode was the shop owner who comes into the squad room to report a robbery. Obviously it wasn’t the first time, because the shop owner goes to the file box by the door, pulls out the correct form, and hands it to Detective Fish. I thought that was hilarious!

Nice. Though they (the network) could have done the gutsy thing and shifted the ad-sell so that the play-out could have been complete.
And to those who feel the need to make a general comparison is different eras' tv quality: there was plenty of crap on back then, and a lot less channels to dilute it.
