And for those that wonder: Västerbottenpaj is basically just a pie made with only cheese. Västerbotten ost /cheese is a cheese with a very strong flavour that hits you in the mouth, so nice. Although...me saying it is a cheese with strong flavour is kinda wrong, because it is kinda weak compared to other cheese types here :P
Every time I travel from Sweden to the UK to see my swedish friend he always says: "Can you please for the love of GOD bring me some dipp bags?" Ends up me buying a whole bunch :)
We have those same dippmixes as well in Finland, and obviously the same brand as shown 😂 mixed with sourcream it can be enjoyed with veggie plate too! Cup up cucumber and carrot sticks, some cauliflowers, what ever else you like and dip them in the dippmix, yum ☺️
meat balls and beat root salad is the best. And it's not always the way you need to eat it. But if both are served, I most defenetly eat them together. Just don't drop it on your shirt, it wont go away :D
That dip can also be used for salads as a dressing or for the taco friday. So yaa why not. It can be stored in the cupboard and you only need to buy the sour cream or creme fraiche to mix with it.
Hmm, I have never heard of rödbetssallad/beetroot salad being a Christmas specific thing, sure it usually is on the Christmas table but it is available year round and personally I buy a tub 1-2 a month and eat it even without a meatball sandwich. Same with pickled herring, it might be more commonly consumed on holidays but it is still available year round. 🤔 I also would recommend a dish called 'Flygande Jacob', probably my favourite Swedish concoction.
You are absolutely right, neither rödbetssallad nor inlagd sill are christmas/holiday specific things. I get that for some people they are but not traditionally and not in the general sense of our food culture.

Beetroot salad? Yep. The sandwich with the combination beetroot salad + meatballs is a staple so you never need to walk far to find a place that have it.
I never considered it weird that we mix our own dips...😂 I mean the spice mix is ready so it's not from scratch but I guess having it mixed for you is even easier. You can also buy powered soup and sauces in stores, they taste fine!
Love that you are surprised by the dip powder 🤣🤣🤣 But it is lovley, cant wait til the weekend and eat crisp or veggies with that dip!🥰 I do it with Creme Fraiche others do it with gräddfil. Thanks for a great video 👌
You can eat beetroot sallad all year. Sure, it's probably most common during christmas time. But you can find meatball sandwitches or subs with beetrootsallad everywhere.
We DO have ready made dip, but it usually taste rubbery and with an aftertaste of chemicals. The "powder" is usually all natural ingredience and with the sour cream, it have a very fresh taste. If i sit with riends and a movie, i usually also add some chunky salsa and nacho chips.
If you are going to eat pie in Sweden, the Västerbotten pie is the one you should go for. Västerbotten is an area in northern Sweden and it is a cheese from there that has been named Västerbotten. A well-aged spicy cheese that all Michelin chefs around the world know. If you have a shop with a luxury cheese range where you live, you can ask if it is available there.
"Fredagsmys" is basically making a verb out of "cozy things on a Friday evening". It stems from the idea that you celebrate that the work for the week is done and now you can have a relaxed nice Friday evening doing "fredagsmys", which can be watching movies, eating stuff associated with the occasion etc. And yes, the powder is bought with sourcream.
Something that surprises me when people talk about Swedish food is that many forget that we have a long tradition of street food, we call it korvmojen 😂. Something that is super good is flatbread roll or like we say in Sweden tunnbrödsrulle. Flatbread rolls with hot filling are sold in hot dog stands and street kitchens as a fast food meal. The filling usually consists of sausages, mashed potatoes, some kind of mixture such as cucumber mayonnaise or shrimp salad and often also raw or roasted onions. As a rule, ketchup and mustard are also included in such a flatbread roll.
It's pretty easy to make your own dip as well. One time I had bought potatischips and gräddfil, but forgot to buy the Dipmix, but I really did not feel like getting dressed and go down to the store again. So I looked at what spices and similar stuff I had at home. I ended up mixing black pepper powder, garlic powder, and a little bit of "grillkrydda" (sort of means "grill/barbecue spices") into the gräddfil. I was careful with it though, only adding a little at a time, and tasting each time, so I did not ruin it with to much spice. It tasted pretty good in the end. :)

"Dipp powder!" is actually seasoning for sour creme. And the meatball/beetroot salad on rye bread is a classic truck stop sandwich I have eaten since the sixties. It's brilliant.
In Naples, Italy, there is a famous pizzeria that actually serves pears, strawberries and other fruits on its pizzas, so why would it be wrong with banana?
@@swedishmetalbear Unfortunately, there was a program on TV where they visited and compared different pizzerias. This pizzeria was owned by Italians and was located in Naples, which is why it was quite surprising. It could be that these Italians were unusually rebellious.

Our dipp is BOMB 🤤 I asked my mom to send me some when I was at boarding school in Swizterland and introduced it to my classmates, they all became obsessed!
The dips don't really work the same with sour cream as is, the consistency is very different from gräddfil or kermaviili like we call it in Finland. I've lived in AUS, US and IE, and the closest I've found to work is to buy some greek yogurt and put a small amount of water in it to get it more runny, and then add in the content from the dipp bag. Nordic dippmixes are way better, than any of the ready made ones I've found abroad, although in the US they have the Lay's Ranch one which is decent.
Beetroot salad is diced pickled beetroot and red onion (and sometimes apples) with mayo or crème fraiche (or a mix of mayo and crème fraiche which i prefer), mustard (coarse not dijon) and black pepper. It's a staple on the x-mas table, but also on meatball sandwiches.
the dipp bags are great if you want a quick condiment for jacked potatoes. mix it up and add something like fried bacon or cheese to it. quick and very delicious.
Sorry Dwayne, but sometimes you are a bad listener - let the poor Brit speak before you pause 😂 He love crisps (we call it chips in Sweden) now when he discovered our home made dip (not from scratch since the powder is smacked with flavor), he now even loves pie because he likes the Swedish pies more. If you haven't paused when he show the sandwich in the beginning you would have heard him say it was a meat ball sandwich with beat root salad
The reasoning for the dip mix is shelf life, ready dịp would go bad while the mix has longer shelf life and you just add sourcream when needed. And it's really versatile cause you can dip whatever in it.
Calling the mince Bolognese is a misrepresentation I would say. It's a lot of different kinds of flavourings and a lot less saucy than what a Bolognese is. With the powdered sauces, we have that for savoury too. Everything from gravy-like Brownsauce to Béarnaise and Hollandaise to Curry-sauce. Not always the best but its an easy base for a nice sauce. A nice cheese and ham pie is nice. Or spinach and feta-cheese!
It highly depends? Some versions are just fried minced meat, but a lot of places use the actual sauce. Me, I use it was the base instead of marinara (when making that specific kind of pizza), then cheese, then the other toppings.
One of the tastiest pizzas have banana, peanuts, pineapple and currypowder 👌🏻 And you should try a "köttbullsmacka" it's awesome with beetroot sallad and meatballs
Nah, smoked ham, pineapple, shrimp and curry powder (and ofx lots of extra cheese). If a banana has even touched my hot, savory, food I will literally hurl, even if they pick it of the food comes back up :p I do love deep fried banana with maple syrup and icecream though.
Foods to try in Sweden besides what was in the video: 1.) Västerbottenpaj (In north Sweden (Norrland) they special type of cheese that called Västerbottens Ost and Swedes typicaly make very savory and delicious pie with that cheese) 2.) Tunbröds rulle (This is one of staples in Swedish junk food, it's basicly thin bread with alot of filling like mash potatoes, hot dogs, veggies topped with ketchup and mustard) 3.) Gas station hot dog (Alot of worker class LOVES to pass their lunches at gas station ordering a double french hotdog with alot of variety grilled sausages to choose from) 4.) Kantarell macka (Swedes do love kantareller (chanterelles) mushrooms, this usualy made with toasted white bream with a chanterelle sause ontop and also served somtimes Västerbottens cheese) 5.) Palt (A Heavy dough ball with meat inside, boiled in water and served later with butter and lingon berry jam) 6.) Renskavsgryta (Reindeer stew, there are alot of different kinds but trust me if i say that you are in north Sweden for a visit and somebody saying there are doing "renskavsgryta" you are in for a great and delicious time, also typicaly served with lingonberry jams or even blackberry jam) Well tecnicaly that is in the video but i have an addition to that 7.) Köttbulle macka or Leverpastejs macka (The first one is shown in the video with the beet salad and meatballs ontop and the second one is special type of liver pate served with ham or cheese on top)
I want to be a bit nitpicky here, palt is made from potatoes. Either ground or grated potato with wheat and/or barley flour, with finely chopped salty pork belly in the middle. Boiled and then served with butter and lingonberry jam, I also love to add what I think is called golden syrup in english (a sugar beet concoction), mm-mm-mm. 😘👌🏼
Pickled heering, eggs, mayo, some veggies on rye-bread... Nom-nom-nom! All year. Every day! And on special occasions...: A Schnapps! An Aquavit or and ice cold vodka! Oh.... T-A-C-O P-I-E!
My belief is that beetroot sallad is popular at Christmas because you need to do something with all the leftover meatballs. It's still good all year round though.
Dipmix is so f-ing good, now I'm hungry too. Good thing with it too is that you don't have to eat it all while in Sweden, just buy like one (or four) of each and bring home, and use your locally sourced sour cream. :) Its great for dipping veggies in too, like carrot sticks. Chipotle cheddar, sweet chili and Ramslök are my favourites, but honestly, most are pretty good. Its basically sugar, salt, starch and spices. Doesnt take powdery at all, its yummy. I think our pies are very French inspired, like the Quiche Lorraine if you know that. Lots of egg and cheese usually. As others said, the Västerbotten cheese pie is really excellent. I bought a large tub of Rödbetssallad this Christmas. Turns out, its basically just me who really likes it out of all the Christmas dinner guests, so I got to enjoy beetroot salad and meatball sandwiches for a full week for lunch from the leftovers. Not complaining.
The dipp flavour bags is only a bag with spices so it's not that strange. Sour cream is often referred to as the equivalent of Swedish gräddfil, but it’s not exactly the same. Gräddfil has a lower fat content (around 12%) compared to sour cream (which is typically around 18-20%) and is also milder and thinner in consistency. The closest equivalent to Swedish gräddfil in England would probably be low-fat soured cream or sometimes buttermilk, depending on how you intend to use it. However, there isn’t an identical product, as gräddfil is quite unique to Sweden and some other Nordic countries. If you want to recreate something similar at home, you can mix: 3 parts natural yogurt (preferably Greek or low-fat natural yogurt) 1 part sour cream This will give you a similar taste and consistency.
Crisp dipp pouder is like soda flavur. You add it to a basse and you get your dipp. It take less space and if you dont need it now, you can save it sens it is in a pouder form.
I rarely use such dippers for chips. enough with creme fraiche but not always. But such dips are very good with long slices of cucumber and carrot. We call it grönsaksdipp = vegetable dip.😊 Gräddfil = Sour Cream
The beetroot salad is not only for Christmas, it is a staple on the Christmas table but it is sold all year in every single supermarket for a reason! It goes well with quite a lot of different food as well as making fancy sandwiches, it is not my personal favourite but I know a lot of people like it with chicken, with or without potato salad as well as a example aside from meatballs and other red meat dishes.
Västerbottenpaj is really delicious. A Cheese pie with a traditional Swedish cheese, nice and strong flavour. The dip powders have the benefit of lasting a long time so the stores can keep a wide range of flavours. And the end product isn't that different from the ready-made dips. How do you think they are made in the first place?
The dipmix is great, I like to buy them and eat with veggies like carrots and cucumber. And the powder packages don't really go bad, so you can buy a couple of different tastes and then buy sourcream when you want to use them. And also pies are common in Sweden - they are easy to throw together and are pretty cheap. Not something you usually eat at a restaurant. I usually make pie out of leftovers in my fridge maybe once a month (single household). But if you're only going to try one pie, try the little more expensive one: västerbottenpaj. It's a delicious cheese-pie.
Dip powder is essentially a spice mix for making dip and cold sauces. You can mix the dip powder with sour-cream, yogurt, creme-fraiche, and cream cheese. Feel free to add mayo if you like You can combine dip powders. And you can have more or less sour-cream to your dip if you want a stronger or milder taste.
10:01 it is just the same in Finland and those ones what you can see on the screen are also sell in Finland. In Finland ready dips are new thing, maybe 2 years ago they came on shops.
Of course I have rödbetssallad at christmas, and at other times too for meatball sandwiches. It really lifts the sandwich flavor to new heights. And it should be available in most grocery stores. The powder dips are amazing, especially the sweet chili one. So tasty, with heat and sweetness. Also, the powder doesn't expire quickly, so you COULD buy a whole bunch and bring them home if you want. The pies are more along the line of quiches. Bacon and broccoli is a favorite of mine, but home made chantarelle pie is uh-mazing.
The "köttfärssåspizza" usually called "Mexicana" and it's minced meat sauce (köttfärssås) with "taco spices". It can also be found as frozen pizza in most Swedish supermarkets.
@ It can be called different things in different pizzerias. I have seen it called.. Pizza Bolognese, Orientale, Torros. The one you are referring to has taco spiced mince meat on it.
my go-to is sourcream&onion chips and the dill dip mixture. The holiday dip is best for carrot & cucumber sticks! The most iconic food is the swedish tacos. On fridays its very usual to eat swedish tacos!! We call it "taco friday". In EVERY store you will find a taco isle with sauces, tortillas, nacho chips and taco spice mix! You have to try it, but a competent swede needs to make it for you hahah!
Beet root sallad is used all year round, not just christmas. =P It is definetly a must on christmas though. But as some have previously said, that sallad on a sandwich or in a baguette is delicious, especially with meat balls and cocktail tomatoes. Omnomnom
The powdered dip is brilliant tbh, because it has such a long shelf life in powder form so stores can have a huge variety of dips. Oh, and if you try Swedish pizza, pick up some Bearnaiese sauce from the pizza shop too.
My favorite is Orientale Special: Fried minced meat (not bolognese sauce), sliced onion, and a cracked egg (that cooks in the pizza oven) topped with tabasco. Such a good filling pizza. Almost like a "Pytt-i-Panna" pizza.... :)
The powdered crisp dipp you can buy in the store is very good. Better than any pre-made ones I have tried. But I make my own with sour cream, sweet chili and a mix of spices. It's even more delicious :D
the powder is essentially spices you mix it together, why we dont have fully done dips is bc the spices doesnt expire as quickly as the base you mix them with and since not all people eat all sauces some sauces gonna get expired before being bought
Yes we make dip from powder. The powder is dry so it lasts almost indefinitely. Mixing it on demand makes the result fresher than storebought premade dip.
Don't mock banana-curry pizza until you try it :) I mean what's the worst that could happen.... and oh yes - you mix the crisps dip with sour cream, it's what makes crisps yummy :)
The drisp dip i didnt even know you could get pre made in a jar/tub. There is almost only the powder mix in Sweden. It is amazing and crisps are so boring without the dip. You just take a bag of powder, pour it in some sour creme and stur it with a fork and its done.
You can find beetroot salad in any grocerie store, Rydbers 😊 I eat it to fish meals aswell. Not only for Christmas or easter... 😮 And the dip are sooo yummy for cucumber, carrots and other veggies. Hope you have a nice trip here 🤗
Västerbottenpaj for the win
This but get a second mortgage before you come here :D
I came here for this suggestion. Of all the different ones, that is the Paj winner!
Totally agree, Västerbottenpaj is the best, followed by tacopaj 😊

If you haven't paused when he show the sandwich in the beginning you would have heard him say it was a meat ball sandwich with beat root salad
Chips and Dipp is the best. Also, veggies and dipp is great
You don't have to use crisps to dip... I gave successfully had parties where I served paprika (bell pepper), cucumber or carrots cut in staves to dip.
The beetroot salad, yes you can have it for christmas but you can buy it year round. Not strange at all.
The dip powders are really handy, just buy a bag and mix with sourcream (gräddfil is just sourcream).
The reasoning for the dip mix is shelf life, ready dịp would go bad while the mix has longer shelf life and you just add sourcream when needed. And it's really versatile cause you can dip whatever in it.
Just dont doubledip. 😂
Christmas ham with beetroot salad is a must on the Christmas table
One of the tastiest pizzas have banana, peanuts, pineapple and currypowder 👌🏻
And you should try a "köttbullsmacka" it's awesome with beetroot sallad and meatballs
Chickenpizza with Banana, ham, cheese, pineapple, peanuts, curry and curry dressing! :D
Nah, smoked ham, pineapple, shrimp and curry powder (and ofx lots of extra cheese).
If a banana has even touched my hot, savory, food I will literally hurl, even if they pick it of the food comes back up :p
I do love deep fried banana with maple syrup and icecream though.
Dipp in powder form isn't that odd. It's like a spicemix that you mix with sour cream.
Foods to try in Sweden besides what was in the video:
1.) Västerbottenpaj (In north Sweden (Norrland) they special type of cheese that called Västerbottens Ost and Swedes typicaly make very savory and delicious pie with that cheese)
2.) Tunbröds rulle (This is one of staples in Swedish junk food, it's basicly thin bread with alot of filling like mash potatoes, hot dogs, veggies topped with ketchup and mustard)
3.) Gas station hot dog (Alot of worker class LOVES to pass their lunches at gas station ordering a double french hotdog with alot of variety grilled sausages to choose from)
4.) Kantarell macka (Swedes do love kantareller (chanterelles) mushrooms, this usualy made with toasted white bream with a chanterelle sause ontop and also served somtimes Västerbottens cheese)
5.) Palt (A Heavy dough ball with meat inside, boiled in water and served later with butter and lingon berry jam)
6.) Renskavsgryta (Reindeer stew, there are alot of different kinds but trust me if i say that you are in north Sweden for a visit and somebody saying there are doing "renskavsgryta" you are in for a great and delicious time, also typicaly served with lingonberry jams or even blackberry jam)
Well tecnicaly that is in the video but i have an addition to that
7.) Köttbulle macka or Leverpastejs macka (The first one is shown in the video with the beet salad and meatballs ontop and the second one is special type of liver pate served with ham or cheese on top)
Yesss! Palt och Renskav! Best Northern Swedish foods.
@@BreekonWithoutHope hjotronsylt (cloudberry jam) does feel a bit left out.... warm Hjortonsylt and vanilla icecream ;)
saw a german person mention "knödel" which looks a lot like palt, think knödel might be made from other things though or more variety to them.
@@gellawellathink you mixed palt and kroppkakor up. Palt is with blood.
A meatball sandvich with rödbetssallad ( beetroot sallad) is a great, yummy combo. And don't forget, beetroot is healthy for your heart.😊
Well yea beetroot salad is definitely a Christmas tradition, even in Finland (probably due to swedish influence)
Yes, but you can buy it in stores anytime.
Not only christmas I would say holidays in general, so christmas easter midsommar etc
It is also used in the traditional herring salad "sillsallad"
Finding the right dip mix to pair with the right chips is so much fun and everyone has their own favourite combo
västerbotten ost paj 100% västerbotten chease pie
How do you know if it's a feast or a holiday in Sweden? Is there pickled herring on the table, then it's a holiday :D
Aaamen!!
If you want to recreate something similar at home, you can mix:
3 parts natural yogurt (preferably Greek or low-fat natural yogurt)
1 part sour cream
This will give you a similar taste and consistency.
Crisp dipp pouder is like soda flavur. You add it to a basse and you get your dipp. It take less space and if you dont need it now, you can save it sens it is in a pouder form.
It's important to let the dipp rest for a couple of minutes before serving for the best taste 😋
I rarely use such dippers for chips. enough with creme fraiche but not always.
But such dips are very good with long slices of cucumber and carrot. We call it grönsaksdipp = vegetable dip.😊
Gräddfil = Sour Cream
You have to try Västerbottenostpaj, the foremost Swedish pie with, according to my opinion, our best cheese..
cheese pie or mushroom pie are probably my favorites. And for dessert rhubarb pie with vanilla custard sauce.
It's a delicious cheese-pie.
what, beet root salad only for christmas? I eat it all year round
Dip powder is essentially a spice mix for making dip and cold sauces.
You can mix the dip powder with sour-cream, yogurt, creme-fraiche, and cream cheese. Feel free to add mayo if you like
You can combine dip powders.
I've never seen the köttfärssås pizza (first one) in any pizzeria I've been to
The "köttfärssåspizza" usually called "Mexicana" and it's minced meat sauce (köttfärssås) with "taco spices". It can also be found as frozen pizza in most Swedish supermarkets.
@ It can be called different things in different pizzerias. I have seen it called.. Pizza Bolognese, Orientale, Torros. The one you are referring to has taco spiced mince meat on it.
You don't even need to use gräddfil, if you use creme fraiche, you get a much thicker dipp
ALL of this that he was showing is GREAT!!!
Best pies are broccoli and cheese, or ham and cheese (broccoli and ham works too).
Supermarkets sell meatball sandwiches with beetroot salad all year around. You can buy a piece of smörgås tårta at the same time
ok, it is a spicemix that you mix up with sourcream
my go-to is sourcream&onion chips and the dill dip mixture.
I love beef tenderloin pizza with bearnaise
Yes. This is also a classic and unique Swedish pizza you cannot find elsewhere.
Pizza with ham, bananas, pineappel and curry powder is legit. Some put peanuts on too but Thats too much for me.
the powder is essentially spices you mix it together, why we dont have fully done dips is bc the spices doesnt expire as quickly as the base you mix them with and since not all people eat all sauces some sauces gonna get expired before being bought
Pie/paj in sweden tends to be closer to quiche for other countries.
some pies are food
and then there's apple/rhubarb or billberry pies
The drisp dip i didnt even know you could get pre made in a jar/tub. There is almost only the powder mix in Sweden. It is amazing and crisps are so boring without the dip. You just take a bag of powder, pour it in some sour creme and stur it with a fork and its done.
Same, I’ve never heard of dip in a jar until now.
My favorite pie is tomato and onion pie that my mom made regularly during my childhood. It’s so so good!!
Minced meat on pizza is usually paired with small shrimp here in Sweden. Mmmm
Is it? I've never seen that.
beetroot mixed with mayonnaise is it and with meatballs is magical.
You can find beetroot salad in any grocerie store, Rydbers 😊 I eat it to fish meals aswell. Not only for Christmas or easter... 😮 And the dip are sooo yummy for cucumber, carrots and other veggies. Hope you have a nice trip here 🤗
My mom eats rödbetssallad on her knäckebröd every monring
I think that the dippmixes is a Scandinavian thing becourse we them in Denmark too, I have 3 different kinds at home right now
@Morten_Beck_Knudsen Pfff.. you can't fool us. Everyone knows Denmark ain't a real place.
