    I hope you have some nice brandy to add to the drink. a non-alcoholic version with ginger, cloves and cinnamon is always delicious as well. Sorel (Rosella) drink recipes are all over the internet of course. Have you seen the white version?

      No, not much. It gets to hot (about 110 degrees Fahrenheit, or 43 degrees Celsius) here, so much so I have to concentrate on just keeping the citrus alive. But most of my trees are in pots, so it isn't that much work.

    Hello mate. Have you tried to freeze the older bananas and mix them with coconut milk in an food processor. add some other frozen fruits and honey and you have delicious ice cream. Cut the bananas in small pieces before you freeze them. Tnx for a great RUclips channel.

    We have had spring like conditions for the last month. Mother nature has decided winter isn't over yet. They are calling for 1-2 feet of snow come midweek. I guess I can't complain. I got a lot of spring work done during winter lol.

    • @1975Jdonov
      @1975Jdonov 8 лет назад +2

      also I put bananas in the freezer right before they go. I will then use them for banana bread over the next few weeks.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  8 лет назад

      I saw a few places got more snow over the past few days. Is that about it for this season ? Have you got your seeds all sorted for spring?
      The bananas I tossed had small black beetles in them, first time I've seen them here. Buried them in the centre of the cooking compost pile so the blighters didn't have a chance to hit my other fruit. ;)
      Cheers & have a top one mate.

    • @1975Jdonov
      @1975Jdonov 8 лет назад +1

      Rob Bob's Backyard Farming & Aquaponics Historically we can get storms up to the first week of April but that is rare. I would bet the freezer would kill the grubs so it might be worth freezing them before compost. I wave some stuff ready but I am still a month away from early planting. I am worried about my mulberry trees I trasplanted from the front of my house to the back last fall. The spring like winter and the winter like spring may damage it but I will not know until true spring finally starts.

  • @Kindrid68

    Yes we call it Sorrel, in The Caribbean. We harvest it around Christmas season for drinking. Drawn in hot water until the calyx's lose their colour. add a few clove for taste as it cools and white sugar to sweeten to you liking. Another take on this is a liqueur by using white rum (not) boiled obviously soaking the sorrel for about a week in a covered pot. Then adding 3-5 cloves for 24hrs before adding sugar to sweeten to your liking, the proof of rum does not matter. Strain both cordial and liqueur to bottle. Instead of rum Vodka or even scotch could be used, but white rum and vodka are best. You may even put 1oz of cordial to sparkling wine and add a florette to garnish for a nice type of mimosa :)

    • @TheEarthCreature
      @TheEarthCreature 8 лет назад +1

      Yeah it's known as Thai or Jamaican Sorrel as an alternative name elsewhere. In temperate regions sorrel is a completely different plant, though, so roselle or rosella is what most people know it as in other regions.

      In Latin America we know it as Jamaica, let the flower dry then boil in some water, let cool and put through a sieve so you only get the rich red water. Add a bit more water and sugar and some ice. Great drink for the hot days, can also add other things like mint, ginger, lemon etc. love watching Ching your videos from Cloverdale California just my landlord would not allow me to set up a hydroponic system.

    Trying to understand if you need to wait for each bloom to harvest? My plant has many pods and seems to be real heavy for the plant. I am in a tropical climate. I did see a few flowers, but not many. Maybe I am missing them? Thank you and love your videos!!

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  7 лет назад +1

      The flower buds do look like smaller versions of the mature calyx. Best to pick the mature "fruit" once they reach about 1-1¼" or 25-30 mm in size if you want plump calyx to process. You can process the more mature ones but they don't hold as much moisture & tend to have a bit more tang to them I think. tangy.
      Hope that helps some Karen.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  8 лет назад +1

      Hi MBG. The seeds were direct sown late spring & we're a few weeks into Autumn now (about 5 months all up). Strangely enough the temp's then & now are about the same with the days being in the low 30's & nights in the mid 20's. If I treat them nice enough we might just get to keep them going through winter into next spring.
      Hope all's well with you & the family.

    Hi Rob, Hope you are taking it easy with such a sore back. Here's hoping you can get some answers and some relief. I am having fun getting my seeds to come to much. They come up alright and then suddenly they're not there. We think there are a few rodents looking at upping the greenery in their diet. In Hervey Bay it's still very hot and humid and my garden is waiting for it to be a little cooler before it starts to shine.

      The back is doing a lot better thank you. I think walking Lizzie everyday since we got her has helped a lot.
      Have you had any luck since posting with the pests? I've had real issues with slugs & snails here for the first time. They have been hitting all my new brassica seedlings as they go in. Luckily they leave a slime trail so are easy to identify.
      Hope your "winter" season is going well for you.

      Hi Frank. I wound down the worm farm over summer as we have started to clear out under the house for the renovations. All the scraps at the moment are being buried around the patch or added to the centre of our current compost pile. I do have plans to set one back up again but it will be a ways down the track at this point.
      We have no shortage of compost worms here though as I'm still finding loads in our compost pile I'm currently using.
