I don’t see the Prowler as much as I see Chips unifying form and function. Open wheels, chopped, elongated prow, possibly widened . Beyond a Manx, beyond a straight dune buggy, beyond constraints! Imagine this thing with a Ford V6 twin turbo?
I remember early Chip Foose. Back when it was " Foose, yeah we heard of him". But Wow, what you have done to the auto industry, factory, aftermarket and hotrod and custom has been so influential. Anyone who digs autos in any form owes a debt of gratitude to you. Way to go Mr. Foose you paved the way for many to enjoy You 'da man!
I'd like to have my ol' '67 VW back. It was a special model with a 1500cc motor for that year. Actually, they were '661/2 year models that got titled for '67 and were all of one color...basic moss green metallic. Mine had the gas heater and solid "moon roof". Wish i had it again. That car was so much fun to drive. I like the one you drew with one exception and that would be to have front axle back a few inches from where you had it. Otherwise it was good :) I did a model of a VW with a turbo Buick v6 up front( with clutch)with a driveshaft back to the gearbox.
I'd love to see one of these Beetles built like a 'fat fender' era kustom. That doesn't mean I don't like the idea of a hot rod style bug... 👍 What makes it easy to use them for such projects is the fact that the overall shape of the Beetle didn't change much over the production time. Thus you don't have to take one of the (nowadays getting quite rare) early ones to cut up for your project.
I've never seen something like that before, turning a vw bug into a hotrod, someone should come with a name for it, something like Volksrod for example. LoL
Videos like this 15 years ago would have been so nice when I was learning to sketch and illustrate from being so inspired by Chip. Awesome videos and info Chip! Keep them coming!
I absolutely love Chip and his work. He has great skills. What got me in the video was the fact that he has enough pens and pencils to save Tokyo yet his go-to is a Bic Round Stick. I love it! Thank you Chip for keeping us humble.
Man, I grew up with Volkswagens. My last one was a red 65 convertible with Porsche rims and a 2016 dual weber motor. I would love to have something like this. Thanks for sharing your Awesome work! Mr. Foose
When I was at Chips shop during the overhauling beetle build he drew a similar beetle that I would love to build, front engine air cooled rear wheel drive🙂. I think the sketch got pinned up in his shop, I always wonder if it still hanging there.
If you have a budget, the beetle is the perfect car to start with, can do heaps with a beetle. Off road racer to full restoration to beach buggy to hot rod and everything in between.
I love the idea would be fun to run with it! building a beetle is on my to do list at some point. I think keeping the motor in the back would make it unique from all the other roadsters out there! I love watching your ideas come to life on paper. Thanks for sharing.
I love Chip and I love watching these but when I turn away it feels like Martin Sheen is hosting some new version of Bob Ross's The Joy of Painting. That's not a bad thing. "Now I'm just gonna paint a happy little scoop here..."
it's a VolksRod, but not as we know it! I love Beetles And I love Hot Rods, so this is the perfect blend of the two. You could offend a few more people if you decided to put an air cooled Porsche motor between those meaty back tyres, and I for one am all for it!
This is so inspirational to me, I've been building a vw on a s-10 frame with a motor in the front, I have looked up to chip for my art my whole life. And I agree, why have something anyone else can have, make it your own.
To be unique instead of a hot-rod i would do a custom 2 seater pick-up from a beetle but with some up-grades parts from Porsche (engine, gearbox, suspension & brakes).. that would be unique, practical and fun ! The thing is i can only resume to sckhetch wile Chip Foose can do the whole shebang since he is also fabricator, welder, mechanic, painter, stylist... etc.
Wow, that looks fantastic. I wonder if the massive VW Beetle 40 HP motor could push those wheels. Lol. Chip, luv you, I know you would have already thought of that. Thanks for your content.
Well, it's ok design, pretty much seen in other iteration of design, but Master Foose PrePorsche is still the banger. I would add some shiny rollbar, and some slick bumpers, but would not change the engine/transmission configuration. Maybe even ask Porsche for collab, for AWD Roadster/Beach Buggy.
Plymouth Prowler? Again? Wonder what that drawing would look like if, He kept the front stock to back of front fenders, from rear of front fenders to firewall stretch for chosen engine. I guess it would tip hat to Chrysler Airflow

Volkswagen. "I might put the motor up front". Nice pic though. As an amateur VW mechanic who has rebuilt engines, transmissions and convertible tops on Bugs and Karman Ghias, I got to say NO. Not sure how that concept "saves the door skin". WTF

Think I've seen one already done almost like Chip's drawing or pretty close to it. Bugs VW have been done every which way you can think of when I went to my first BUG show I was in awe at the Vallejo Califorina fair grounds.
At the end, Chip says that if he was customizing a VW - this is what I would want to look like. He didn't draw it to please others. It is his idea - what is yours? Could you draw that idea of Chip's? Could you even conceive of the design? Nah, I don't think so.
While I agree that Chip doesn't owe anyone anything, there are loads of people who can draw as good if not better, same goes for ideas and concepts (even tho that's subjective). Granted, he's an amazing artist. Besides, criticizing something doesn't automatically mean you have to do your own thing to earn that right. If we did, we'd all be racing drivers, professional artists, cooks, and filmmakers. Although sometimes criticism does go too far, beyond simply expressing disapproval-people full on bash Chip as if theirs is the only possible opinion or they paid for it. It's his vision, he doesn't answer to anyone.
Defensive much? As a matter of fact, I can draw "that idea of Chip's" and indeed "conceive of the design." Chip is a brilliant designer, craftsman and visionary. This design is unimaginative and arguably overdone. Just google "Volksrod" to see what's actually out there.
