I love how Bannister didn't need to ask Ada anything; he could have gone on acting as though Agnes was the master of the house, and Ada probably wouldn't have noticed given how used to it she is. But by making a point of asking her, and by deferring to her in front of Agnes, you can see the lightbulb going off in Ada's head that she's in charge now. He set an entire new conflict off, and it is going to be awesome to see.
Aside from the obvious humor in this situation, with the power dynamics being turned on their head and all, there's another side to this. Agnes spent decades taking care of everyone and everything, keeping a roof over Ada's head and providing her with safety and security. But now with the Van Rhijn money all but gone and Ada's inherited fortune picking up the slack, Ada may see this as a way to do for Agnes as Agnes did for her. Agnes took care of her all those years, now Ada can take care of Agnes. Bickering aside, the sisters obviously love one another dearly.
I caught that, too. Ada doesn't seem the type to be confrontational, nor get haughty/bitchy in her new financial status. This new tightrope of power shifting from Agnes to Ada will be very delicate.
Bannister is low key my fave! Every time he comes on screen he makes me laugh out loud! 🤣 His look of alarm at Agnes at the end before scuttling out 😂 He’s a whole mood.
Yeah in real life the Van Rhijns would have been disgraced/shunned by the 400 then sell their home dramatically downscale to middle class and they all would have to get to jobs. Probably even Aurora would barely drop by. 😂
Oh, the look on Agnes’s face when she realizes she is now the poor relation… Christine Baranski is one of my favorite actresses and this performance is Emmy worthy.
haha same! The moment they lost all their money and her husband got sick I said to my partner: wait and see. He dies, has a fortune she doesn't know about and gets everything. Still loved that moment
Its nice to see that she at least got some security from it all, i had woundered how they would keep up the power dynamic of the old and the new money, when there was no old money any more, i love this show!
Marion has a job she enjoys and has no desire to give it up. Ada adores her so I imagine she’ll still live there… …. at least till she and Larry Russell wed 😉
Marion has a much better relationship with Ada than with Agnes. So if even Agnes let her stay at the house with an allowance, there’s no reason why she’d think that Ada would change that
I am very much entertained by this series. The dialogue is cleverly written. Notice how the use of "there will never be any changes" and yet there is one "big change" happening. The contrast between two women is turned around. And the household will experience a different kind of energy. But I am sure they can all work it out in Season 3 (please) #thegildedage #hbothegildedage #hbo
This should be interesting to for season 3. Ada is now a rich widow...so she may have a multitude of gold digging suitors coming out of the woodwork trying to charm her into marriage. With her sweetness and naivete, she'll be like a lamb surrounded a pack of starving wolves. Luckily, she's got her sister Agnes to blow them away with her shotgun of a mouth LOL
SOMETIMES, real life is. And the trick is, if it DOES happen, not to waste the chance. A niece of mine was in tough financial situation for two years single with a toddler. Inherited $10,000. Used the money to 1. Buy the child needed items. 2. Spent rest on community college courses for specific trade. Now makes decent money supporting her family with a job in that trade. Temptation was there from friends' pressure for cruises and casinos but she chose the better course.
Agnes behaves in a similar manner to my Great-grandmother Annis Hardin-Neiman. I can remember seeing and hearing her speak to me and others in that direct way. She had a very large house in Bar Harbor Maine for the warm months and a house on Madison Avenue New York for the "season". A five floored house as one of my cousins called it. It was razed in the '70s.
I've tried throughout both seasons to be sympathetic to Aunt Agnes. But with that close, I'm not so sure. Gratitude is not a word that springs to mind.
Agnes is all barks, no bites. She can be all sharp, even when she's got money, no one listened to her (I mean, i.e, Ada and Marian particularly LOL). Ada bears Agnes well though, because Ada understands Agnes the best and lets Agnes take advantage and lots of things slide, but now Ada has money, I could see Ada reprimanding (gently) Agnes when Agnes gets carried away with her barks. I can see Ada pushing Agnes toward change (slowly). Ada will also help with Marian and Larry, open the house up for new company, and so on. She'll also involve Agnes with more activities, even activities involving the new money people which Agnes would feel annoyed by.
You all seem to have forgotten that agnes invested 5$ out of the 15$ for Jack's clock patten, meaning she will have 1/3 shares of his venture. Translation: She will not be broke!
Agnes marry well, to have a good life, and mantein Ada. Thats why when Agnes talk to Luke before the wedding she told him Ada had no money, which he just laugh off... Thats why now she comes into money
she doesn't actually care where the money comes from, apparently, just so long as the coffers are kept full and the family can parade the look of New York Elite they've been cultivating
@@nm0852 It depends. Not really. 3 generations of wealth make one a "Gentleman" but it was the OLD families: The" Knickerbocker" Families that were considered 'Old New York'
Why on earth would that have been your preference? 😂 Women back then needed money if their husband was dead, not a child they couldn't take care of on their own
Gotta admit this was some typical Downton Abbey Dues Ex Machina type result to it. If "Maud Beaton" doesn't return for season 3 and that entire plotline was just to get Ada in charge and nothing more, I'll be very disappointed.
In reality, both Marian and Agnes would be expected to observe 3 to six months of being in mourning on the account that Luke was Marian's uncle and Agnes brother in law
It stinks that Ada lost Luke but she definitely deserved some happiness and I love now Agnes is gonna have to eat a little humble pie and well I don’t think Ada is going to be anywhere near as bad as Agnes now Agnes is going to learn how Ada and Mariam felt when she reminded them that she is supporting them.
Foi uma saída muito fácil de roteiro, do nada herdar um monte de dinheiro, sinceramente não gostei, mas isso em nada macula a série, ainda assistirei por quantas temporadas forem heheheh

Yep, that was hella petty of him, but it stirred the pot and made for a great scene. The power dynamic between Ada & Agnes is about to shift.
@@MauriceRivers415it wasn’t petty at all.
He was giving respect to the person who now pays their wages, as he should.
Agnes face was priceless!!!🤣🤣🤣
When he did that, I screamed at the TV in laughter. It was the perfect way to end this season.
@@arkadashi It took all the wind out of her sails, and I'm here for it.
Bannister is definitely aware of the "golden rule": the one who has the gold, rules..
EVERYTHING

And Agnes never let Ada forget that she was providing and paying the bills.
Ada would never do that.
Bannister is low key my fave! Every time he comes on screen he makes me laugh out loud! 🤣 His look of alarm at Agnes at the end before scuttling out 😂 He’s a whole mood.
With one question, Bannister highlights the sudden shift of the power dynamic between Agnes and Ada. Bring on Season 3!
I love the look of feline amusement on Marian's face when Ada tentatively begins to step into the role of lady of the manor.
Lord Fellows certainly does know how to write a convenient inheritance lol
Levenia has entered the chat lol

OMG THIS WHOLE SCENE WAS A GAG! I'M LIVING, ESPECIALLY @2:47 ! Agnes' face cracked at that part! 😂😂😂
I'm hoping that Ada does some reno work on her sister's house so it doesn't look like a dark cave anymore.
This was the most delicious ending!!! Season 3 pleeeease!
I saw this coming from a mile away but it was still delightful.

Textiles in Boston…those poor factory workers in unsafe working conditions. 😢

lol I loved this....Agnes finally gets her comeuppance!
It gets me how Marion just assumes that she'll get to stay and get her allowance, lol.

Fortunately, we will see it, because it has been renewed
Bannister has absolutely ZERO loyalty lmao (and we love him for it) He and Aurora should be best friends
Don't be ridiculous. He is perfectly loyal to whoever pays him, as long as they pay him the most.

IKR!!!!
Yes, but unfortunately real life is not fair

I can’t wait for the video release so I can binge Season 2!
Great final scene of episode 2. Def my favorite season
Nothing needs to change but
... things might be a little different! 👏

I believe Luke inherited it from his grandfather so that would make it old money.

Season 3 PLEASE pretty PLEASE!!
Things might be a little different in the future= Pumpkin gets her own room that’s twice the size of Agnes’s
great scene, this show took some time to like its all about rich people plotting and seems odd with the world we all live in now but its still good.
I was hoping that Ada would have gotten pregnant from Luke and he left her baby.
Why on earth would that have been your preference? 😂 Women back then needed money if their husband was dead, not a child they couldn't take care of on their own
Lol that woman is way past menopause like to have had a baby lmaoo
Jesus, Ada is not in her 20's.

CHRISTINE BARANSKI IS MY HERO

Which episode is this in season 2?
PAYBACKS !!❤

Title: *becomes
How much do you all think she inherited?
Bannister should have shut up. Agnes should have fired him after his cheating in the first season. Apparently she didn't want Bertha to get him.
That’s the reason she didn’t fire him
Why shut up? For acknowledging the truth? He works for Ada now. Showing her that respect is noble. You, know.... The right thing to do.
