This is one of the darkest, most disturbing movies I've ever seen and I LOVE it! It's such a well-made movie
Jen is one of the best, great edits, pays attention, thinks and doesn't blabber needlessly over the whole movie, she's interesting to watch especially with deep movies like this, she's not putting on a show centered on her but motivates the viewer to share the movie experience with her, that's what movie reactions should be about, some are so high on cafeine, feels like they're ranting on Tik Tok, I usually turn them off after a few minutes, I'm picky about movies, like to be entertained but don't watch fluff, when a title interests me, I'll try many reactions, but I often end up disapointed cause the reactor misses the whole point of the exercise, if the movie is obliterated by the reactor, what's the point? I'm not kissing butt here but many reactors could take notes, intelligent reactions by a person who actually knows what she's doing... How refeshing, another great one, thanks Jen!

I saw this in the cinema when it first came out. I was so into the film and empathising with Brad Pitt's character, that when he's about to become wrath I couldn't help myself and shouted out "shoot him in the face". Bit embarrassing now, but that's how good the film is and how well it gets you 👌
The flash of Tracy right before he shoots John Doe is an amazing little detail. As soon as it pops on the screen you know his mind is set.

I've seen this movie many times, and the intensity has never worn off. It's the only film I can say that of. Brilliant.
Yes this is a well crafted story. When the killer gives himself up with two sins still left it just throws the audience for a loop. And then it loops back in an incredible way. Enjoyed your reaction to this Jen, it's certainly a more gritty movie to watch.

You just don’t get amazing movies like this anymore.
Remember some of it has to do with supply and demand. If people don't pay to watch quality material it won't pervade all the crap out there.
@@madeincda Worth noting that the movie barely made it through MPAA ratings and Fincher was pressured immensely to change the ending into one where the good guys won so it's not like it's always the box office that is responsible for whether good movies exist or not.
Another fine example of why the 90's were the best decade of film ever. Everyone is great in this but Spacey nails it. Gotta love Fincher's work.
1995 was a phenomenal year for crime films: Se7en, Heat, The Usual Suspects, Casino, La Haine, etc...

@@romangunter621 So was 1984: Ghostbusters, Terminator, Karate Kid, Gremlins, NeverEnding Story, Temple of Doom, Beverly Hills Cop, Footloose, This Is Spinal Tap, Romancing the Stone, Nightmare on Elm Street, Splash, The Natural, Red Dawn, Last Starfighter, Sixteen Candles, Top Secret, Purple Rain, Amadeus, Once Upon a Time in America, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, etc...
By the way…they originally WERE going to actually show Gwyneth’s head inside the box, (a life-like prop head was even created for the scene, which you can even Google search…and yes, it’s as creepy looking as you’d think lol), but then it was decided that it wasn’t necessary to show the head on camera, and that Morgan Freeman’s reaction after seeing what was inside the box was enough to get the viewer’s imagination going.
However, Gwyneth’s prop head was eventually used in the film “Contagion”…..15 years later, lol
That ending has to be one of the greatest and most memorable of all time. It was so insane with arguably the greatest plot twist in movie history.
One of my top 10 movies of all time. I saw this in the theater. I think I still have the soundtrack somewhere. SO GOOD!!!!
In real life the delivery driver would've been 2 hrs late and the box would've looked like someone played football with it😒

Fun fact: The now canon-ending was just an alternative ending in the beginning but when Brad Pitt read that draft he was completely blown away and he told Fincher:"We either use the alternative ending as the real ending or I quit the project."
so, that's the reason, the ending doesn't make any sense. doe (spacey) allegedly has been planing/doing all this for over a year. but mills (pitt) and his wife are only in town since recently. so, how exactly could doe have anticipated, that the cop being after him would have anger issues, a beautiful wife and that he would envy him?
@@montanus777 He didn't. His plan was complete but the victims for this plan where chosen on sight. Doe found out about Mills after he met him the first time disguised as a photographer. He saw his anger issues, thought he found the perfect candidate and started to look into his life to see how to get to him.
@@Bambuzzsprosse so, he pedantically planned 5 murders for over a year, knowing there would be 7 in total. and the last 2 victims he just chose a couple of days before his plan was fulfilled? yeahhhhh, uhm ... NO! that's a completely bullshit plot.

Good reaction. Se7en is a masterpiece, one of the greatest ever right amongst the best. The rain, sounds and visuals were masterfully done to create a bleak atmosphere and add to the suspense. The script, acting, and direction was also great. Other great films to react to just to name a few are :

The main theme of Seven is the Apathy. It makes for such a dark, cynical view of the world and this is the prism through which Seven is cast. Somerset hates the city he has sworn to protect. All his years on the force have caused him to be cynical, jaded and apathetic. He says, "In a big city, minding your own business is a science". The idea is reinforced when he explains in rape prevention, the first thing women are taught, is to not yell "help". NO ONE responds to "HELP" but instead to yell "FIRE".
@lethaldose2000 In a weird way, I actually find this movie hopeful and inspiring. At the end Somerset overcomes his apathy, as shown by his commentary on the Hemmingway quote and him saying "I'll be around." I see the message of the movie as saying that there's every reason in the world to lose all hope and be apathetic, but to be human is to resist that and keep fighting anyway.
Everyone in this movie should have won an award's, great performances by everyone
(IMHO) This is David Fincher's best work. Brilliant psychological thriller! I saw it in the theatre with my girlfriend in 1995 and our mouths were hanging open from start to finish (she may have been ogling Brad Pitt though 😆)! The film is relentless. You can tell how drawn in you were with this film- when John Doe was shooting at Mills, you were reacting as if he was actually shooting at you!
It's great that the surprise of Kevin Spacey as the killer and of course the twist ending wasn't spoiled for you. "What's in the box!?!" is a pop culture catch phrase. For us back then it was a COMPLETE surprise!
Another great thriller also by David Fincher is "Zodiac" from 2007 with Jake Gyllenhaal and Mark Ruffalo- based on the actual Zodiac Killer murders in the 1960s.

I remember watching this movie when I was a teenager. It was the first movie with no happy end. Quite a shocker, really. Your genuine reaction brought back those memories.
Oh and that opening credits song was not Howard Shore but Nine Inch Nails.

It's a rough one. This is what real story telling looks like. Emotions evoked. Mission accomplished. Your face told the story.
My favorite Jen observation is how the film avoids explicitly showing the violence and gore of the murders, while still shocking the audience with the gruesome aftermath of the crimes.
Love this movie, a fav since it's release, a master-class in so many ways.
It's disrespectful to call the victim 'fatman' 😂. ❤ you Jen!
The movie left all the violence to your imagination, which can create more disturbing images than any camera shot.

I appreciate that you really stepped out of your comfort zone to watch this movie, and ended up appreciating/liking it in hindsight. This was one of the first films that really made cinema 'click' with me, one of my buddies in high school was a film buff and shared this, among other great films, with us.

David Fincher s Masterpiece! Great cast, script, sound design, great everything! I LOVE David Finchers aesthetic, every frame looks like a beautiful, if disturbing, photograph especially the scene of John Doe with his reflection in the rain puddle as he approaches mills. Pure Art!
Not just brains and beauty - Jen is also brave - even though a day-time watch, it still took a lot to view a movie that she had been warned about so much. Well done and thanks. As usual a careful, considered reaction well worth watching.

I found your channel a few days ago and have been binge watching ever since! I loved your rocky reactions! Fun fact for this movie, the actor who played the cop wasn't told the sloth guy was actually alive. His reaction was real because he was genuinely caught off guard! It made a great scene unforgettable. Thank you for the awesome content
Your ending comments describe perfectly how a horror/suspense movie should be made..I'm rarely moved by scenes of actual violence/gore in a movie..It is so much more powerful when left to the viewer's imagination.
My wife and I went to see this at the theater. She was freaked out by the opening credits and the first scene. SHe didn't want to stay. So we left. I finally got the see the movie some time later when it came out on DVD. I was not angry. The music and opening credits scene was something that had not been done before. As far I know. Now, it is common for dark movies etc.

This is an incredible movie. The setting is also interesting almost like its a character by itself. But it also ends brilliantly because even though everything that has transpired and the dark atmosphere Morgan Freeman's character still talks about hope. That was a great touch to end the movie on. Plus John Doe was right. This movie is still being studied.
Edit: Early Brad Pitt is awesome. Should check out Meet Joe Black. There he is with an experienced actor like here, Sir Anthony Hopkins.

@@svenpoletka5236 You've completely failed to understand the ending of the film there. John Doe's final victory was complete the second Mills shot him; it is even literally, explicitly stated in the film.
I used to be a wimp too when it came to movies but eventually I became interested in the whole "behind the scene" stuff and since then whenever I watch these kind of movies I just think to myself how good the make up team was or how insanely cool the prosthetics are, etc. Helps take a step back and realize this is just art. I'm actually eating spaghetti as I'm watching this. Btw you're a total cutie. Cheers

I don't blame you Jen for avoiding this movie. Without going into details, there are some seriously disturbing scenes/visuals. A little emotionally scaring.
I'm sure this movie traumatized many people. I really like the mystery and suspense. Its creepy lighting/color palette, music and sounds all worked so well together to set that crazy dark atmosphere. Very well done
However I typically prefer movies with a bit happier ending. You made it through that insane movie. It's a dark view of humanity.
Fortunately there are also good people in this world.
My favorite movie, for many of the reasons that you touched on, Jen.
Weirdly enough, I had the movie spoiled (I asked the guy recommending me to watch it to tell me) for me before seeing it, which might be why I was able to enjoy it even more.
So... rough as it may have been, I really, really recommend watching it again sometime soon.
You're more likely to be able to enjoy and appreciate much of the style and ambience in it, like say all those city noises you mentioned. There's just so many great details and style in here. In particular how sound and visuals play together. I think it shows that David Fincher started out directing a bunch of music videos.

The song that creeped you out during the opening credits was part of a Nine Inch Nails song, not an original from the movie score composer.
If you haven't seen Fight Club and like Brad Pitt and this director (David Fincher) you should definitely check out Fight Club.

You did well with this. Disturbing is absolutely right; I believe the whole ambience of the movie, from the constant rain, to the way the sound is (which you noticed) is intentionally set up to heighten the sense of unease you get while watching it. Sloth is the absolute worst. Even after seeing the end of the movie, and seeing what happens there, the whole Sloth thing still creeped me out more than anything else.

I saw this movie when it was released in theaters. It is a very well-made, but extremely disturbing movie. I had trouble sleeping for several days afterwards.
Somehow I feel it was the baby that sent mills over the edge. He was already shocked when he hears that Jon doe took Tracy’s head but to hear he was also robbed of being a father? You see the emotions intensify even more and that’s when I feel mills is like “ screw it. I’m ending this monster “

Thank you for uploading this. How amazing was that movie? The story is obviously brilliant. But there you have Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey at their peaks. The acting should have resulted into 4 academy awards alone but the mood, the rain... everything about that is stunningly good.

I gave this a rewatch for you, Jen.
I remember watching this as a teenager and being fascinated and sickened at the same time. It was one of, if not the first, truly disturbing movies I had seen and it really pulled me in, and broke that childhood wall of innocence. It was a hard watch that first time, but such an excellent film. A lot of the reactors on RUclips are a younger audience so it's really fun to watch you, someone near the same age (I'm guessing lol) see these movies for the first time.

One of my absolute favorite films. Nice reaction.
I believe when this came out in 1995 Kevin Spacey was not a particularly well known actor which fit well with his "John Doe" character. We don't find out much about him or his background so he could be "anybody". It's interesting to think about - what a difference it makes if you cast a relative unknown vs casting a big well-known star in a role.

@@jenmurrayxo Hmmm....I hope I'm not wrong about that. It looks like 1995 was his big breakout year. He starred in three pretty big movies that year - Outbreak, The Usual Suspects and Seven. Maybe when Seven came out he had started to be better known (he did win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for The Usual Suspects) but probably at the time when he was making Seven, he was still not a big name yet.
Very intelligent movie and a great thriller to boot! Pitt and Freeman are awesome but Kevin Spacey steals the show! Luv the way Spacey has a cool & calm way of acting! You know what, it's easy to get past the violence when you're busy looking for what's important. Like clues, atmosphere, psychology, etc. But that doesn't take away from how shockingly gruesome we can be towards each other.

You nailed it re: the violence factor - the only onscreen death is John Doe's execution (rightfully so). Fincher is truly a master craftsman and this is his masterpiece. In a word - uncompromising. The gritty neo noir look (nice catch on that too Jen) with relentless rain and gloom with nothing but dread from everyone only adds to the suspense ratcheting up with each kill. Fincher purposely did not name a specific city which gives its anonymity a purely universal feel - this happens everywhere in the US. Period. DynamicDuo Freeman and Pitt are great together (wish they'd collab again). I only found out recently that Rob Bottin - who did the astounding make-up for THE THING - created the Sloth visuals (!) Great job. PS: Boston is adorable.
yeah this movie is a classic!!! for sure, even myself haven't seen this until somewhat recently, never something I went out to see but now that I've see it, it was a good time.
Howard Shore didn’t score the opening credits; it’s a remix of the Nine Inch Nails song “Closer”.
I'd suggest another police movie you would likely enjoy is LA Confidential.
Russell Crowe, Kevin Spacey and Guy Pearce play detectives based on their own Screen Personas (RC Violent, KS Oleaginous, GP Ultra Ambitious). It is set in 40's LA and has a great payoff over the name of a character.

In the video game Borderlands 2 most items are randomly created, but there are special items which are specific and rewarded at certain times. At one point early in the game you loot a box and there is a special pistol named Gwen's Head in it. :D

I remember playing a game called Heavy Rain over like 10 years ago and I remember thinking how similar the tone and overall atmosphere of the game was to Seven..

I never finished Heavy Rain. Perhaps one day I will, but that guy's later works ruined him for me. Too much story, not enough gamer agency.

Here's a little tidbit of foreshadowing in the film- the logo on the delivery service van at the climax is a box with "Angel's wings."
Now in the delivery service- wings usually represent "Mercury's Wings." However in this case the box in the logo is the same style square box as the box with Tracy's head! The quick hidden message being Tracy has already gone to Heaven. 😮

Wow great reaction. This is one of the best horror/suspense/thriller movies of all time. It is a masterpiece of acting, writing and directing. Super intense and creepy.

A great story is David Fincher talking about a test screening of this movie.
First off, they lured people into the screening promoting the stars of LEGENDS OF THE FALL and DRIVING MISS DAISY.
He said that after it finished a couple of librarian types walked past him, and one of them said to the other: "The people who made that movie should be killed..."
When I got the notification..."Oh no, not Se7en... not for Jen".
I am glad my concern was unnecessary. I didn't fully underestimate you, as my concerned waned during the time from notification and viewing the video as I think I've grown to know you some and was glad to see that was proven when you gave your summation at the conclusion of the movie.
I saw the movie when it came out and don't believe I've recommended it to anyone, LOL particularly my girl friends. It is indeed a unique & extraordinary film, especially the artistry of the actual filming; lighting, sound, sets, props, camera work, etc., really complemented the story to such a new level, especially for 1995.

Jen, So glad you liked it. It really is a masterpiece of movie making. It manipulates your emotions so well. I love watching people see it for the first time. I haven’t read rest of comments so sorry if I’m repeating, but no MVP, low key MVP or the worst? I know they are pretty obvious in this but still…. Your audience demands it! Ha ha

This is how you act direct tell a story. This scene broke me. I came out of the movie with a new gauge for fear and creep factor. David Fincher color palette. Early Brad Pitt showed hints of the great actor he would become. Morgan Freeman showing his acting powah. Gwyneth Paltro was a actor in the movie. Great video. Watching kids watch the old great movies shows you how subverting expectations have nothing to do with insulting you. Show don’t tell. I need a couple vids before I commit.
I saw this one time only when it came out either in late 95 or early 96. I was in Thessaloniki, Greece enjoying a short two or three days of vacation, and it was the only movie in English (with Greek Subtitles) at the theater. A couple of buddies of mine and I walked in to see it. I remember walking out of the theater thinking "This is what these people now think America is like." I was disturbed much like you are. Chills.
Sketch artists must love Kevin Spacey's face for this is the second movie that they have to do a rendering of him.

I'm glad you decided to watch this. If you have a fascination about this genre then you may enjoy some other movies: Zodiac, From Hell (about Jack the Ripper), possibly The Cell (Jennifer Lopez, but the concept is unique), and maybe a more recent move called The Raven (based on Edgar Allen Poe's works.... bit they are being staged in real life). None of these suggestions are "horror" movies I'd say, but fit in the psychological genre with sub-genres of suspense, terror, horror and even avant-garde for one of them. All worth a watch in my opinion. Loved Se7en. This move, The Silence of the Lambs, and From Hell arey favorite two in this genre. Great reaction to the movie!
