      What are the ballpark costs for hiring a session player for say, one track?

    • @ColtCapperrune
      @ColtCapperrune  4 года назад +3

      Madge Deepers it depends on the session player, some charge per song, some charge per day, or half-day, some get paid through the union. But generally speaking it usually comes out to around $100-$250 per song

    Dude, I hired Cameron Fleury for drums on my last album and that was the absolute best thing I could have ever done for this album! He's a double bass beast! So, he was recommended by another person that I was recording guitar for. I didn't know much about him but I looked him up on RUclips and it was clear that he was the right drummer for my style of music. And more than that, it was evident that he's an extremely cool dude. So it was a no brainer to hire him. And I continue to work with him.
    So on that note (no pun intended...'note'...'music'...ah, the puns are worse when you explain them!!)... he makes it clear on his channel what he's all about. So that's a take-home for all of us musicians - making certain that it's easy to tell what we do, and what type of person you are.

    Man I learn a ton here Colt, but honestly I think every time I leave I'm far more confident to just try things I haven't yet or suck at, until I get it right.. and then also you draw a road map of obstacles that we may run into, and potential fixes. Man that's huge, and a good feeling, thank you for that sincerely. Cheers hope all is well to you and your family in this time.

    Cool video. Another point to mention is that the producer that recommends the session players is probably used to working with them which also will save time and money because they will already have a good working relationship. It will also make things a lot easier for the producer if he’s the one who is mixing the songs because he’s used to recording the players. Cheers

    I play in a band that lost a great drummer and violinist bc the leader used session guys instead of the live band (which was great and would have made a great recording). Those two guys quit shortly after and both told me years later it was because they didn’t get to play on the record after spending time helping to develop all the parts

    • @ColtCapperrune
      @ColtCapperrune  4 года назад +2

      thebr0wnhornet so that is an obvious example of when not to hire a session player. If the band was involved in composing the parts, it’s definitely more common to use the band. That said, the sort of thing happens a lot where the players right filler parts as placeholders until the song is produced out, without realizing they are filler parts. It’s a breakdown in communication between the artist and their players.

    for singer/songwriter definitely, especially in cookie-cutter genres. Session players often nail it quickly because they've played the exact same song 20 times that week- Country music is based on that. It's why we have the "empty cowboy hat" artists. Though a true session player can play just about anything for sure.
    My experience as a producer is the more complicated the song(genre) usually the better the players in the band, and the more territorial the musicians are, so they're usually the best call for playing on the session. Those types of releases aren't assembly-line products so there's a personal connection between the music and the artist.
    Without a doubt though getting the right session player is absolutely paramount in making it work- a session player with a producer mentality/ego can kill a project.
    But this is all based on my experiences, cheers!

    Where would I start looking if I wanted to do some session work ? I've been singing since the 6th grade . I'm in 8th now but I look 18! No I'm kidding I've been singing about 38 years and I get more passionate about it every day. I can't go without it . I honestly have never heard anyone as versatile as myself . I can copy styles almost exact . I cover everything from Micheal Jackson to Geoff Tate or Jon Anderson, Steve Walsh, Dennis D'young flawless . Even Russell Hitchcock from Air Supply. He's great. I never learned how to read . I never needed it really .I have a couple albums out that sold well . Our first album is Great! I would say it even if I wasn't on it. One of Yngwies Malmsteens singers produced it . TALL TALES is the album by CRUCIBLE. Sounds heavy but's not. I truly think you'll appreciate it. I have a strong developed head voice also . I can sing high with ease. My head voice is like a Stevie Wonder type. If you get a sec throw me a link . I'm way better at the singing than recording . But with my new set up using LUNA my vocal tracks are stepping up quite a bit in quality already. Thanks for the info and for all your time helping all us less production savvy cats come a little further a lot quicker.
