  • Orbis was involved with the removal of the last remaining dam on Sugar Creek, near Crawfordsville, Indiana. This low-head dam was built in the early twentieth century to impound water for the Crawfordsville Electric Light and Power Plant.
The plant ceased operating in the early 2000s. Removing the dam will improve the ecology of Sugar Creek.
Check out this video filmed by Orbis Wildlife Biologist and drone pilot Megan Martin.

couldn't see much that was going on in detail. Up close video would've been a lot nicer to have watched. Oh, and longer of a video to get lost in watching it!
    Still good work!

Not sure if this is related but we went kayaking in Shades Park a month ago and I was thrilled to see so many fish in the water. Small and larger fish. I don't think Ive ever seen that many fish in a river/creek system in the Midwest.

That must feel amazing to be out there behind the controls and removing this killer knowing that it can't take any more lives of animals or humans.

That water looks so nasty. Basically what I’ve learned is that my disgust for most bodies of water comes from dams trapping all the filth.

    Megan,
Great drone work. Which drone did you use?
It looks like a Mavic 2 from what I can see in the reflection from the water.

Thanks! I had a lot of fun getting the footage. The drone is actually a Mavic Air 2, although I would like to upgrade to a Mavic 2 (or 3 when it comes out).

How has this affected the flow of water in the area is the sand bar below the damn washed out now?

    • @Orbisec
      @Orbisec  3 года назад +4

Hi Seth. The removal of the dam will restore a natural flow to the stream. This is only the first step in the process and ecologists will monitor the progress as the stream goes through the seasonal progression of a natural waterway.

How in the world did you get a permit to do this without dewatering measures or a turbidity curtain? Surely USFWS and IDEM had AMMs.

Hi Joshua. Orbis was one of several organizations involved in this project including USFWS and IDEM. While our role did not involve performing the actual removal, all proper permits and procedures were followed.

Hey Joshua - the turbidity curtain is just under the overpass and is visible starting at approximately 2:53 - ruclips.net/video/1KW_Tstn31w/видео.html

Can you imagine just how many fish these dams have killed over 100 years 😢

I can imagine how many good paying jobs have disappeared since the industries that these dams powered went to China. Well, we all can get jobs at some amazon warehouse or fast food joint, so theres that.

@@sw8741 The dam was built to serve an old 24 MW coal power plant that is long gone. Getting rid of old obsolete dams is a good thing.

Pitiful presentation of a wonderful project! Your audience comes here to be educated and you, instead, play intrusive elevator music. This is insulting to your accomplishments. Did an adult review this video prior to release? You really might want to ponder changing your format and the very best of luck!
