This Georgics that Virgil is most fascinating! I had never heard of it prior but based on your description, I am immediately stuck by how Virgil combined seemingly unrelated fields of study and art into a consolidated final product! He mixed practical farming with government WITH poetry! That is astounding and polymath in nature! I feel as though the greatest creators and the smartest thinkers are those who excel not in their separated fields but those who excel in multiple fields and are enlightened enough to bridge all these fields together as a definitive product. These are the true geniuses, the ones who can see beyond specific the separations and relate the seemingly unrelated subjects. Even rarer amongst these geniuses are those can successfully communicate this commonality to the masses so they can see the connectivity as well! And when these geniuses create something, their work is infinitely layered since it can be understood from a multitude of different angles and applied to multiple different fields! Grasping the commonalities between seemingly unrelated subjects gives credence that there is a higher truth where everything is connected. I have always been partial to idealism, so I personally find this thought of everything (and by proxy everyone) being connected, related, and united _very_ comforting indeed! It's almost as if there is a "Force" that binds all living things and hold the galaxy at large together. Then again, there just might be. 😉
@@OverlySarcasticProductions But I do hope that making a Star Wars reference in my final sentences does not make my first two paragraphs any less true... from a certain point of view! Every time you heart or reply I'm touched because I have the highest respect for the content you and Red put out on this channel. It really is a marvel, worthy of recognition in the Jedi Archives! And for a great channel like yours to interact with an exiled Jedi commenter like me, it really is humbling experience. It is such a kind thing for you to do on a consistent basis. Many thanks for them! With Anakin, I'm always left wondering if he'd even got my message but with you my dear fellow, I needn't fear. For I know you received it!
Rather courteous of you, Blue, to put this out right as I’ve been reading The Aeneid as my non-school read (on Book 5-6 this weekend). I appreciate your mindfulness ;) Fun anecdote: In her 70s, Ursula K. Le Guin had the sudden epiphany “You know, I’ve never read The Aeneid in the original Latin. I should do that.” And do she Drummer up her old Latin training, got a dictionary, and went one stanza a day until she’d finished it. Then she wrote Lavinia, her final novel (which, admittedly, I haven’t yet read, but will soon).
This is great! The Aeneid often gets overshadowed by the Iliad and the Odyssey, but it's the one closest to my heart because it was basically what my entire four years of high school Latin built up towards.
Excellent video as always, Blue! One thing I think is really interesting about Vergil is that he is emblematic of one of Rome's defining qualities, the way it absorbs other cultures and populations into itself. A professor that I TAed for talked about how the name Vergilius is not Latin in origin, but Celtic, which makes sense given him and his family were from the formerly Celtic Cisalpine Gaul. So, like, Rome's greatest poet was a Romanized Celt.
Who hopes OSP plays Monster Prom? Because I am sure that all of us want to see who will end up in a Love Triangle, their reaction on all the Hot Takes, and to see if Red will say something like “I totally relate to this vampire”
That fact that Blue, who loves the renaissance and Italy, did not mention once that Dante was accompanied by Virgil as a pagan who was aaaaaalmost good enough throughout his own epic, is a monumental display of self-control.
I am definitely missing something with all the "MOTIVATED" memes in the comments, so I'll take this opportunity instead to request that Red make her next solo-reading-stream be of The Aeneid! I looooved how she did Dracula, and Blue is clearly VERY passionate about this work, and it's definitely in the public domain! Match made in heaven???
"Motivated" is a meme because Vergil is the name of one of the characters in a video game (Devil May Cry), and one of his well-known quotes has to do with motivation
In school, I was the only one who studied classical civilisation. It was lonely but I still loved every bit of it, from the myths to the Roman/Greek history. It is also how I found this channel all the way back in 2015! As for the Aeneid, I distinctly remember the many pages dedicated to Aeneas relentlessly chasing Turnus until he killed him. A great piece of work.
I love how Aeneas is so... Roman when he meets Dido in the Underworld. "Sure, I knocked you up and then tried to sneak off without saying goodbye, but I had a city to found. I really don't understand why you're upset!"
Glad to see the Georgics mentioned! My sister went to the oldest university of agrarian sciences in our country, galled Georgikon after the Georgics (and also cos the first name of the founder is our language's version of George) so it's always nice to hear about them.
I have studied Vergil, on and off, since Spring of 1976, This is one of the FINEST encapsulations of Vergil's literary and historical importance that I have ever read/heard here or elsewhere. You are to be VERY MUCH COMMENDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111111

So I'm following the link and buying the book! Please keep up the hard work, Blue!
I think the thing that got me to stick with learning Latin for 3 years compared to the 1 year of French in high school was the fact that translating the Aeneid was way more interesting than trying to translate random bits of conversation. Sure, it's a dead language that I don't actually get to use if I travel somewhere, but it was hella fun to do. This was a nice reminder of one of my favorite high school classes.
This is really great! I love the Aeneid, and think you did a great job showing that Virgil isn’t just a wannabe Homer. Great work mentioning the household gods, for example; I focused on them in my Aeneid video, too. But I have never read Virgil’s other work, and now I want to!
This is such a glorious tribute to the glorious poet! I can't express how much it amazes me that the things people wrote two thousand years ago can resonate so deeply in the modern us, and it proves that nothing really changed in the way we operate.
It feels very weird to hear my name said over and over... HOWEVER, I will be using "virgil slaps harder than a roman legion with a paddle board." And "virgil is best boy" as anti self depreciation for some time.
YOUR NAME IS VIRGIL TOO! I never met someone else named Virgil (online or in person) and I agree it is weird to hear my name over an over. Anyway, nice to meet you Virgil.😊
"Virgil slaps harder than a Roman Legion armed with paddle boards." My coworkers demanded an explanation of the sudden outburst of laughter. Thanks Blue
Also the phonemic vowel length of Classical Latin really makes Latin poetry and prose flow very nicely. It kinda sucks how much Latin literature gets slept on. Oh and my favourite bee fact, is that sometimes bees will sleep in flowers with others from their hive, and they hold feet. It's adorable.
For those interested in the Aeneas story, there is a movie duology about him, composed of the 1961 film "The Trojan War" (in which he appears as a supporting character) and its 1962 sequel "The Avenger" (this time as the protagonist). In both installments, he is played by Steve Reeves.
I love hearing you talk about history. You present it in such a digestible manner. I always love your content and all your hard work. Please don't ever stop.💝

“23 stab wounds! You didn't wanna leave him a chance, huh?!”
They just counted the eviscerations
@@greywalker505 And hilariously enough, if the 23rd one didn't land, Caesar would have lived as all the stab wounds sans the last, were non-fatal.
Now I’m just imagining Vergil in the DMC universe becoming a farmer and poet after finishing up his Hell Royale with Dante at the end of 5.
8:56 the one-two punch of experiencing "She dies mad about it" and "More like Died-O lmao gotem" at the same time was a mystical experience.
You had me through the first two paragraphs and you PLAYED ME. LIKE A FIDDLE.

@@OverlySarcasticProductions But I do hope that making a Star Wars reference in my final sentences does not make my first two paragraphs any less true... from a certain point of view!
And Blue, may I just say how heartwarming it is to know that you actually read my comments? Every time you heart or reply I'm touched because I have the highest respect for the content you and Red put out on this channel. It really is a marvel, worthy of recognition in the Jedi Archives! And for a great channel like yours to interact with an exiled Jedi commenter like me, it really is humbling experience.
It is such a kind thing for you to do on a consistent basis. It's insignificant next to the power of the Force and the stellar content you always produce on this channel, but I want you to know much these little interactions mean to me personally.
I appreciate your mindfulness ;)
Fun anecdote: In her 70s, Ursula K.
Virgil: a poet so good, he made farming and bees emotionally moving and artistically brilliant.
Who hopes OSP plays Monster Prom?
Because I am sure that all of us want to see who will end up in a Love Triangle, their reaction on all the Hot Takes, and to see if Red will say something like “I totally relate to this vampire”
me!
i would love that
I'd watch the heck out of her doing a stream of Monster Prom.
Also it's Sequel, monster road trip comes out if a few days!
@@thewanderer5506 I had no idea. Thanks for the tip.
I knew nothing about Vergil before watching this video, and now I'm motivated to learn more!
I understood why he’s Dante’s poet-crush now
i love the part where virgil becomes the storm that is approaching truly a literary masterpiece ⛈⛈⛈
This MOTIVATED me to learn more about Virgil
Dante is like "Ah, Virgil senpai, I'm your biggest fan!!!"
As someone who took two steps out of law school and never did law again I find Virgil relatable.
First I read the title as 'Vergil' and was really excited
Hearing about Virgil motivates me
Huh, the Devil May Cry team really did their research. No wonder Vergil was such a poetry nerd.
he was already that smart in DMC 3 unlike the reboot DMC where he is a political inferior which is kinda not Vergil
That fact that Blue, who loves the renaissance and Italy, did not mention once that Dante was accompanied by Virgil as a pagan who was aaaaaalmost good enough throughout his own epic, is a monumental display of self-control.
I love that time when he was the storm that is approaching
I am definitely missing something with all the "MOTIVATED" memes in the comments, so I'll take this opportunity instead to request that Red make her next solo-reading-stream be of The Aeneid! I looooved how she did Dracula, and Blue is clearly VERY passionate about this work, and it's definitely in the public domain! Match made in heaven???
"Motivated" is a meme because Vergil is the name of one of the characters in a video game (Devil May Cry), and one of his well-known quotes has to do with motivation
@@leonardorolingstella8554 Ahhh, thank you!
3:45 Virgil: I am the Storm that is APPROACHING, PROVOKING black clouds in isolation!”
I love how Aeneas is so... Roman when he meets Dido in the Underworld. "Sure, I knocked you up and then tried to sneak off without saying goodbye, but I had a city to found. I really don't understand why you're upset!"
You could say he was the storm that is approaching.
I love how he just went: What if... Farms? for two of his books. It's great.
Hey blue, just letting you know i almost never do this with other creators but you've been singing Virgil's praises for so long i can only imagine this translation has to be the best available so i know i HAVE TO read it haha. So I'm following the link and buying the book! Please keep up the hard work, Blue!
Ever since I saw this video was uploaded I knew the amount of DMC comments would be crazy
My understanding of Virgil now is that he was the original cottage core boi
Vergil to the works of his time: I AM THE STORM THAT IS A APPROACHING!
I am glad people are making DMC Vergil jokes
Virgil's Works:
Take My Home, Country Roads
Georgics on My Mind/Let it Bee
We Built This City on Wolves & Troy
This is such a glorious tribute to the glorious poet! I can't express how much it amazes me that the things people wrote two thousand years ago can resonate so deeply in the modern us, and it proves that nothing really changed in the way we operate.

I came into the comments section knowing full well there would be DMC references...
And I was not disappointed, good job team
For those interested in the Aeneas story, there is a movie duology about him, composed of the 1961 film "The Trojan War" (in which he appears as a supporting character) and its 1962 sequel "The Avenger" (this time as the protagonist). In both installments, he is played by Steve Reeves.

One of my favorite things in my pantheon of classics street cred is my t-shirt that loudly proclaims 'Virgil Wrote Fanfic'. It's an assertion I stand by.
Blue meets Dante in the afterlife and they sit and geek out about Virgil as Virgil sits and pines them praising his “worst” work published.
If Virgil consolidated the latin language, Dante knew exactly what he was about to do with Italian.
