He most likely doesn’t. It’s much harder for a native speaker to deliberately change and keep an accent for an extended period of time than it is to just go with the flow and adjust it on the spot - the former requires attention and knowledge (or awareness, at the very least) of distinctive phonological markers of a chosen accent. The latter is a bit more like code switching - you know, like non-native speakers who absentmindedly switch between languages during one utterance. He has good ear though (I mean, d u h) - his American accent is on point, and I guess he was able to acquire it through osmosis (I doubt he went to an accent coach or sth). He switches his own accent to a varying degree depending on the accent of his interlocutor which is pretty awesome, but doesn’t require that much conscious monitoring if one is accustomed to so doing.
@Iris Lee It oscillates a lot between American, British and Australian which is hilarious to me because I've never heard anything like it before especially at 4:08. You can hear Australian in "Ok so how this is going to work is Jonathan my", and then 'producer' is said in an American way, then "who is currently based in" is Australian/British (bit of crossover between us and the poms), then "London, is gonna be remotely" is said in a British accent , then "controlling the software and my computer" is Aus/Brit, then the rest of it is American. I'm just glad he's still kept our accent.
I love that you did this project from home- definitely a humongous help to have an engineer on the other end helping with controlling the program and giving feedback on the performances. I think that’s one of the hardest parts of doing it all by yourself at home, being the engineer and the performer can be stressful and taxing sometimes, or even just being objective about the takes in real time - that’s pretty tough. Excited to hear this record, congratulations!!
Oh ray,,, I wanna watch this video now, u can’t tell me that I’ve gotta wait almost 24 hours to watch this, it isn’t fair. I simp ray struggling with the mics
Loved this so much! Thank you for sharing it! (Ray's accent slide is exactly what happens to me when I'm anywhere near my native Jersey/NYC area accent. Even a show or movie will set me off So glad I'm not alone! 😂)
Damn. I am late...using proper mics is crucial. I was experimenting lately with different options but now that I hear his sound I have 100% confidence in Ray's choices. I will follow ...

I've learned a surprising amount watching this. First of all, you're Aussi!! WHAT?!? You sound like ME most of the time, but then you talk to an Aussie and you sound like Jazza. You've got that whole Rick Springfield/Nicole Kidman thing going where your Yankee accent switches on and off. Second: cable management!! I could totally use a bit of that around here. Third: VSOs (violin-shaped objects) sound different from high-dollar violins in recording tracks. It's also possible that the sound wave looked really different in the engineer's track display. Congrats on the album and the DIY tech stuff.
How? I am absolutely a no techie person. you are now a full-fledged recording engineer. the sound was v good. clean. and-drum roll... I listened to it all..happiness is Ray Chen.
Ray, great job on getting the audio set up on your own. I just finished watching the video and bought you album on iTunes! I can’t wait to listen to repeat like I did for your Golden Age album before I saw you in your concerts in Laguna Beach and LA. =)
I honestly thought you were gonna have a mini ensemble or something with all those mics, I'm so surprised all of those mics are just for you to record the Bachs' solo :O
Had it been a recording studio the room would have been more live. They afforded themselves the optron of hearing from a variety of locations in the room which I think would help "flesh out" this non- ideal space. Guessing.
Don't get disappointed, if your results sound differently from a technical point of view (i.e. even if you play the violin as well). I'm sure there there has been a lot of software post processing involved here! Recording a violin is difficult in any case, but in a confined space it's pure horror. Ray's sound engineer could have helped thousands of frustrated self-recording violinists, but missed this chance - this video is merely a marketing video, nothing else. I guess they didn't use all 6 mics in the end, used a kind of convolution reverb and maybe more. That'd be helpful to show and discuss. Pity.
Also: A combination of $200 cardioids (in AB setup, really??) with $2000 dpa mics? And ribbons in a small non-ideal room, for a violin?? That's all weird. Except if the mentioned mic manufacturers were the sponsors.
Pro tip: to attach/detach the mic clip, it's actually easier if you hold the mic clip still and turn the loose pole of the mic stand. Then tighten that joint on the stand.
ray is becoming full fledged youtuber. the next thing he needs is a sponsorship from raycon earbuds so that we can listen to his music during quarayntine.
DJ StaRyu Please no. At least Twoset never accepted any sponsorship. Honestly it’s a bit annoying seeing the sponsorship talk in other youtubers’ videos.
@@ajchandra7735 i like it cos seeing the sponsor means the youtuber is getting paid. Also u can quickly skip it using arrow keys on keyboard or by double tapping on mobile
Who doesn’t know what piece he’s playing(my guess is that it’s either a Bach sonata or partita) but recognizes it from the fake movie review twoset did?
I notice ray switched accents when he talks with his producers and it seems to be subconsciously. The same thing happens to me too, I was born in the US but my grandmother was born in west Africa and has a heavy accent. When ever I talk with her, I notice I subconsciously almost mimicking her accent even though I’m talking in English. There’s probably a word for it but I don’t know what it’s called.

When ray randomly gets more Aussie and then less Aussie
I thought I was the only one that noticed 😂
I was gonna say the same thing! 😂
And sometimes British?! 😂
As soon as Ray called his producer he switched to his Aussie accent...I wonder if he notices when he does it??
There was one video a long time ago where Ray was skyping with Twoset and he went harder Aussie
Pauline Arriaga and same with when he went to visit Olaf’s studio about 5 years ago

Funny how Ray's aussie accent comes out when talking to a pom haha, same thing happens when he's with twoset
Happens to me when I go back to North Carolina
Love when Ray talks in his American accent but you can hear his Aussie accent wants to come out
Props to your sound guy for insisting something is wrong! :D
Can we just take a moment to appreciate that in 2:39 he had the right pitch and everything, although he has perfect pitch lol

DJ StaRyu I know how to skip stuff. It just feels like the sponsorship makes the video less genuine. Maybe it’s just my feeling.
at least in this album ray doesnt constantly take his jacket on and off between string crossings
