  • This algebra video tutorial explains how to add and subtract rational expressions with unlike denominators. It explains how to get the common denominator in order to combine the numerators of the fractions. This video contains plenty of examples and practice problems on simplifying rational expressions.

I have found that it is absolutely necessary for you to have a very strong understanding of the rules and some of your previous lessons from high school as well as middle school in order to fully grasp this. For example, if you didn't fully understand or retain how to factor or find the GCF, adding and multiplying integers, etc., then this will be difficult. What I do is take myself back and find videos on BASIC algebra lessons to refresh myself on some of the things that I have forgotten and had no need to use once I graduated over 2 decades ago. Then I come back to these videos. Now I am at the point where I understand a majority of the lesson, and now all that is left for me to do is to remember the rules and steps and pay close attention to the signs and change them when I'm supposed to. Good luck everyone. And don't give up. I have cried many tears over math, but with a whole lot of prayer and practice, I made it.

i think you need to touch up on the other topics! most of what are mentioned here in order to solve some of the terms are distributive property (i'm not quite sure about that one), factoring gcmf, sum/difference of 2 squares, and quadratic trinomials. if you manage to study and get all those, you'll be able to solve these problems in no time :)

Wow I didn’t expect it to be this easy
My teacher used the last 2 minutes of class to explain this concept because there wasn’t enough time left, so she basically told everyone to read the section, but reading from the textbook is the most confusing thing ever for me, so I understood absolutely none of it.
For the longest time I was just seeing numbers multiplied together that I had absolutely no idea where they came from, but this teaches the principles that can be applied to anything, which is much more helpful

On the first question I believe it could be simplified more. Can't you just multiply both of the denominators (x) and (x^2) and then multiply the left by x^2 and the right by x. It would be like cross multiplying. Then it could be 5x^2 + 3x..or would not make it less simplified?

JG, I do love your teaching method, best I can find on RUclips. But, as a old beginner in this, I just wish you would give more like examples before moving to a problem that takes a different method. You show one example, then follow with an example that cant be worked the same. Do a few that the methods are same the tell us this next one will be a bit different. So defeating to get one problem, and go "oh, I get that" then next one is like "huh?". Then you work it out, the the next one is completely different!

Seeing those three factors written as the LCD helps students to see (they can compare) what the denominator given needs to be multiplied by.
