I cant lie. I know how to play Gloomhaven, and have been playing a bit of Jaws of the Lion since its release. I understand the rules completely, and as I play Gloomhaven about 5 times a week, I'm not really in need of a refresher. Yet still I enjoy watching Rodney's videos, and have for years. Sometimes Ill just watch Rodney's videos for entertainment. These videos you've made, from Gloomhaven to Mansions of Madness and from Small World to Arcadia Quest, have been the most clear and informative board game explanations on the internet. Can't wait for the fifth video, thank you for your contribution to the board game society Rodney.
I was talking to a co-worker who said she and her husband got Jaws of the Lion for Christmas. They are very casual gamers. But when she mentioned they’d watched an instructional video featuring a super nice guy with glasses, I knew it must be Rodney. It just makes me excited to see people discovering the hobby. Thank you for being such a great ambassador for the hobby. Now if only I could get them to listen to some Boardgame podcasts, then I know they’re hooked.
The first video randomly appeared on my feed somehow during autoplay. I bought this game because of how this guy explained it and it sounded fun! Today, I ordered the big daddy version from Amazon. Ive never owned a board game in my life until JotL. A great ambassador indeed!
Hey Rodney, loved the video as always! Once thing I'd add and like to leave here as a comment since I see lots of newbies confused about this, one side effect of how the elements work is that if for example air was already strong or waning at the start of your turn, you could in the same turn in any order use the bottom part of Power Pitch which generates air and the top part of Stopping Power which consumes air to, Stopping Power would consume the already existing air and Power Pitch would generate new air at the end of your turn as you explained, even if you are using Power Pitch first and Stopping Power second.
I know this is a logical result from what you explained, but I see some people having trouble with this (from normal Gloomhaven) so I thought about making it clear : )
Thank you for your excellent videos. We've been playing this one, relying on just the rulebook, for the first 3 scenarios, but then work got busy and we had to take a break from the campaign for a few months. Now we're trying to pick it back up at scenario 4, and your videos are helping a tremendous amount. We were about to quit the game entirely, because it seemed too much to re-learn, but then we watched your videos and all is right with the world. We just barely lost scenario 4 on our first try. Going to try again today. I've been watching your videos for years. You are one of my favorite RUclipsrs. Thanks for the great content. 😊
I tried the fourth scenario with my two brothers too and we lost too because we ran out of cards.. We’ll try it again sometime in the future probably. Hope you had a blast with the game it looks super interesting to me so far. 🙂
These videos are fantastic. Me and my wife just finished scenario 4 last night but watching through this made me catch a few things we did wrong. (some that benefitted us and some that hurt us) Very helpful!
Love the series :) I wish that the binding part was black instead of white for the book. Such a small detail. But white really stands out.... Actually just the raw metal might be better too.
I thought the same. Also would like thicker paper, a round summary on the back of the rule book and an art book because its so small on the enemies you can't see it properly. Other than that this is by far my favourite solo game, will probably get Gloomhaven once I finish this!
Rodney, after your rules explanations have guided my wife and myself safely through Scen. 1-3, I'm really looking forward to playing Scen. 4. Thanks a lot again for your great videos!
This Scenario 4 is the hardest compared to the earlier Scenarios 1-3. I almost lose this Scenario with my Hatchet is the only one left with card balance before he killed off the final monster. And the conclusion is perfectly matched with how you feel after the end of the scenario that tells you how exhausted you are with all your characters!
Took me two attempts as well. They may have told us about the importance of not playing 'Lose after Use' cards too early in a previous scenario but this is the scenario that hammers it home as there are barely enough cards to finish it without getting exhausted. I am kind of scared to try scenario five now :)
After breezing through scenarios 1 - 3, I have lost scenario 4 many, many times. Since you keep the xp and money tokens even if you fail it, is the intention of this scenario to level up your characters?
Great video! I'm a little bit in doubt about if the dotted lines also affect the elements. For example in the card down in the video (stopping power) in the lower half, is the element only infused of you use the immobilize action or is it also infused of you use the Move 3 action without using immobilize? My guess would be that if your use any of the two actions you must infused the element, get experience and loose the card. Correct?
Does one choose one's cards before or after reading the introduction of the scenario? It could make a big difference in strategy about speculating which cards to bring to that particular scenario.
Hi Rodney! Thanks for all your awesome vids! I have a couple of doubts about attacking objectives: it says that you can only do melee against them, but what about if your attack card says "ranged" but you're adjacent to an objective - can you use that attack as melee with a disasvantage? And my second question: there are a number of melee-range card effects like the Red Guard's "all adjacent enemies suffer one damage" - do these cards also affect objectives, although they are not labeled as attacks per se? Thanks!
If it says melee attack, you can't used a ranged attack against it (even if you're at melee distance). Regarding the melee-range effects: I do my best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but I avoid individual card effects, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there - have fun playing!
Hi Rodney, question on the opening. It says to destroy all the objectives, THEN defeat the monsters. This makes it sound like a required sequence. Shouldn’t it say all objectives AND all monsters?
I see what you're saying. I think they went with that wording, because it's only once you destroy all the stones that you reveal all the monsters you'll have to face (new ones spawn as the objectives are destroyed).
Hey there greetings from Germany. Your vids are clearly and very nice explained. Ive already watched your 5 vids but im comming back to refresh my knowledge. Im Playing Solo and having a lot of fan. This is a game ive looked for to getting away from Consoles and video games. Also i can invite a friend at any time to play with me.
I was wondering how involved these scenarios are from gameplay perspective. It seems scenario 1 was your typical "can't really lose this one" tutorial. What about others? Are they easy compared to average, or which scenario becomes pretty much "full scenario"?
I suppose it's going to depend on how you play (the better you play, the less likely you'll lose :) ), but as an example, I lost Scenario 4 on my first play.
@@WatchItPlayed Yeah I was just wondering, if there are 25 scenarios in total, if 5 were tutorial "non-scenarios" that would not be a very good impression. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Hi there Rodney! One more great instruction video for us newbies! ;-) Thanx! We are in the middle of scenario 4 and have taken a break. Lot of fun even if I belive we gona run out of card this time ;-) We just strolling around to much and didnt relize it will have impact when the spwans come out ;-) Well I play ViodWarden (wich I love) since my 3 doughters wanna play more straight on so to say. But We find it a little bit hard to solve how to use the actioncards that should be active over time. Me as an exampel that play Viodwarden with "Master Influence - 83 initiative", how to solve this tophalf of the card? What is actual the diffrence between an "Attack" and the actual state on card "Grant an attack"? or should I take them for the same? Does it mather if I attack by my self or throu another monster or player? Also, Do I get the 2 experience EVERY time I attack or only once when I set up the card as active? As far as I see in my level 1deck this Card will probly be the base for my build for many scenarios ahead so I realy wanna have this right? Another card I do think needs a clarification is the bottom half of "Signs of the Void - 15 initiative". Do I move my marker every turn whatever or do I move marker every time I actually attack? Sorry for detailquestion here but I had nowhere else to go ;-) Hope its alright with ya? Anyway, Happy New Year 2021 to you all out there! Stay safe and lets play us out of this dark tides... ;-)

These are actually fair questions that you have. I am playing a Void warden too with my too brothers playing Hatchet and Red Guard. We had the same problem too we ran out of cards and lost in this scenario. As for your questions I think Master Influence y ou get the experience one time and it triggers when you grant an attack to an ally or a monster but not for your attacks. As for the Signs of the Void I am not sure. I trigger it every turn even if I don’t have a target but I am not sure if that’s correct. I am a newbie myself. Enjoy the game! 🙂
SPOILER question. Do not read further if you have not played scenario 4. In the scenario I picked up the chest which also gave me the mana potion. But when I finished I also got the mana as a reward. Is this correct? That means both of my characters (playing solo) got the Mana Potion this scenario.
Hey Rodney, quick question. You might have already answered this in a previous video, but I still thought I’d ask. I came across an instance in which an enemy was out of range to attack my character. However, the monster ability card also instructed me to infuse any element to disarm my character. I know that if an attack is attempted, (even if there is no damage inflicted) your character suffers the condition. Do I still suffer the disarm condition if no attack was made by the monster? Thanks!
Ooo, good question J, I'm actually not sure on this one, and I lent my copy to a friend, so not easy for me to check the rules on this for you. This question might need to be posed to the publisher (or BoardGameGeek.com)
Thanks for the video! I have a question. That Phase Out card that gives 5 shields and heal 1 (adding an element), is that a boss only card? If it is a regular monster card, how do we use it? The way I understand shield is, every time we deal 1 damage to a monster, we take away a shield symbol from its slot on the monster stat mat. So if player one did 2 damage, player two did 1 damage, and then player three did 3 damage, the monster finally takes 1 damage on player 3's turn. I did some research online, and some seem to say that the monster simply get a 5 reduction to any attack damage it takes for this whole round. This effect ends as soon as the next round begins. And that card has initiative 5. It will be hard to hit and damage the monster, before it put up its shields.

“The Favorite” card is essentially Hatchet’s favorite weapon. When he throws it, it does +3 extra damage but also gets lodged into the enemy. When the enemy dies, Hatchet can retrieve his weapon from the dead body. The way this works in the game is that you “activate” it by choosing the top of “The Favorite” card. When you do, place the card to the top of your player mat. Put a circle “hatchet” token on top of the card. On a later attack (of your choice) do an extra +3 damage and then move the hatchet token from “The Favorite” card to the monster’s status card. When the monster dies, take the token from their card and place it on the hex where the monster died (along with a coin as usual). Hatchet can then retrieve this token by ending his turn on that hex, or using a Loot action from nearby. The token then goes back on top of “The Favorite” card, where it can be used for a future attack. Note that other players can loot the coin where the monster died, but not Hatchet’s token.
@watch it played , if you have a 4 player campaign and 1 dies before you spawn more monsters, when you spawn the monster do you do it counting just the 3 players still at play or all 4?
Scenario 4 has a chest with the mana potion in it, which one of our team received. Does the reward at the end mean someone else will also get the mana potion? Seems strange to give out two of those at one session.

@@WatchItPlayed I may have worded that poorly, we get to determine as a group who gets a reward ... it was just strange to see the same item in the chest and as a reward.
I have an idea maybe since warhammer 40k 9th ed is right around the corner once it drops you make a tutorial for new players, and maybe even a gameplay series
Hello Rodney. I have a question. In scenario 6. Objective is to kill all growths. Is melee damage the only way to destroy ALL objectives? Like for the summoning stones? Thank you

I’m sure I could check the rulebook but I’m not home... are you able to infuse an element that is waning to make it strong again? Or can you only infuse an element that is inert?
@@WatchItPlayed All these videos are fantastic. They help a lot. I still have some questions though. If I stand adjacent to a summoning stone and did a range attack do I still need to do disadvantage to my attack?

If i use the Hatchet character and than i use the favourite ability, i will get the 2 xp every time after i can kill someone with my axe and pick it up ? so in this scenario there are a lot to kill, so maybe if i kill 4 time with my axe can i get 8 xp ? Or is missread this ?
@@WatchItPlayed So the goal cards just work on the honor system since you don't flip them right when you accomplish the goal but at the end of the scenario when you claim you acclaim you achieved it at some point during play?
@@WatchItPlayed 5:20 has a dot on the red and blue card. Just something I noticed next to some of my cards and wasn’t sure if it mattered or why it’s different
When you use an element in the strong column, does it skip all the way to inert? Or just move once to waining? I wasn't exactly sure sorry! Thanks for another great series
Hey Tom, I am always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find a clickable index in the description to help you find the relevant section.
Im about to finish scenario 5 and the book says I should be over 45 experience BUT IM NOT. Im going in to 5 and I only have 20 EXP on my 2 characters. I WILL NOT have enough at the end of 5. Why does the book think Ill have over 45 EXP??? Thats nuts right?! Am I missing something. I gained 6 after scenarios 3 and 4 plus the 4 or 5 I picked up in each mission. How the heck are you supposed to gain that much EXP???? If I play THE FAVORITE then I only get the 2 EXP one time right? I dont get thet 2 EXP everytime I transfer the token to an enemy do I?? Unreal. Thanks!!!! :-)
I think you might have forgotten to give yourself some of the EXP awarded in some of the scenarios. It's hard for me to say, as I'm not at the table with you seeing what you're doing. You are right about how the favorite plays though! You get the XP just when the card is played.
Just finished playing scenario #4. Solo mode. It's was really fun & challenging. But I died half way through the scenario. It's cool, I'll try again tomorrow. I did keep all gold coins, treasure & experience points thou right? No perks I on stat sheets I presume.
@@WatchItPlayed i'm thinking more of target never stocked them. or only had a few in stock. kinda like how walmart messes up stuff like this. when i went to my local targets they didnt even have an empty spot on the self for them
This scenario was extremely difficult for me. It took me 5 tries, and I "might" have bended the rules to finish. I'm not sure if I just really suck at this (definitely a possibility) or if the challenge is extreme (probably not). I'm playing solo with Hatchet and Voidwarden. Not sure if I should play on when I have a problem with the f*!@ing tutorial. Man, I suck.
Some would argue that cheating in a board game is stupid. And I think that's what's meant to keep it from being a problem: as a player, don't be a lying cheater. If a player is a lying cheater in board games, then people shouldn't play games with them (and they should also go find another hobby). Know what I mean?
A game that's meant to be an easier version of Gloomhaven to teach the ropes of regular Gloomhaven... and yet it still takes five parts to learn just simpler Gloomhaven? Maybe newcomers and people looking for easier-to-play, less complicated and just as fun, if not more fun, dungeon crawlers should just look elsewhere? Not hating, just being sensible.
Big Bryan I believe he was sponsored to make the 5 part beginner scenarios....but it’s actually pretty easy it just gradually adds more every scenario so you get everything.
Yeah, the game once you go beyond the first five scenarios I think it's almost identical to normal Gloomhaven, it's just meant to be more approachable as Rodney said because of this intro scenarios and the smaller campaign for people that don't want to have to make as huge an investment in time as normal Gloomhaven requires.
Thanks!

Yep, is that's what you got, then that's fine.

Will there be a game play? Also how does favorite token from hatchet work??
Hey Daniel, I don't get into individual card effects. A little too much for me to manage across all the games I've covered.
Ok no problem
@@martincortez7516 thank you i got confused at that part, this explained it
@watch it played , if you have a 4 player campaign and 1 dies before you spawn more monsters, when you spawn the monster do you do it counting just the 3 players still at play or all 4?
It remains at the player count you began the game with, so in this case, 4. Hope that helps!
@@WatchItPlayed ty!
Super helpful
Have a great time playing!

I suspect they'll do their own tutorial series - they often have.
Yeh i wrote this before the announce of the in depth series
Hello Rodney. I have a question. In scenario 6. Objective is to kill all growths. Is melee damage the only way to destroy ALL objectives? Like for the summoning stones? Thank you

The only thing I don't get is why battle goals are encouraged to be private. Is it considered too OP to complete them through teamwork?
Good question Adam - that's something the designer would have to explain.
I’m sure I could check the rulebook but I’m not home... are you able to infuse an element that is waning to make it strong again? Or can you only infuse an element that is inert?
Yes, you can infuse an element that is waning.
Thanks Rodney! You’ve done incredible work on these videos. Can’t wait to do Scenario 4 tonight.
Do you still draw an attack modifier when melee hitting a summoning stone?
I am just away from my copy right now, or I would look it up and double check, but if the rules don't say you "don't", then you do :)
@@WatchItPlayed All these videos are fantastic. They help a lot. I still have some questions though. If I stand adjacent to a summoning stone and did a range attack do I still need to do disadvantage to my attack?
@@JL-bt8sg Wanted to update my answer, to remind you that the special rules for this scenario say that the Stones can only be attacked by melee.
If someone is wounded and they long rest, which happens first, the wound doing damage or the heal 2?
The long rest will constitute the character’s entire turn for the round, which will occur on initiative 99.
what about the heal attack modifiers with voidwarden? how do they work?

So with battle goals like the one you showed or anything else as a matter of fact how can verify it
Just be honest about whether or not you did it?
@@WatchItPlayed ah
@@WatchItPlayed what if we're not sure that we were complete it or not? or just forget about it (because so many happen during the scenario)?
@@edwintabianto5824 There's not really an answer for that, that I'm aware of - you'd want to be keeping track of whether or not you completed the goal - I'm not sure what the answer would be for forgetting if you did it or not.
Hello could you please please make top ten two player games :) impossible to find a decent list we trust you
Hey Sara, thanks for the interest. I talk a bit about that here in an old FAQ I made (so, forgive the old set :) ) ruclips.net/video/p0Lv8LHadMc/видео.html&t=10m55s
Awesome videos.
Is the XP DIAL level reset to zero at the beginning of each level? Thanks
Yes, it's reset at the start of each scenario.
@@WatchItPlayed You the best Rodey!
Hi love your videos. Bring back the mustache from 2011.
Odds of that happening are VERY low :)
So whenever an element is consumed it goes to the inert column?
Correct!
Hey! I picked the city event that unlocks scenario 23 Best in Town after scenario 3. Is it wise to play this before scenario 4 or after? Thanks!

If i use the Hatchet character and than i use the favourite ability, i will get the 2 xp every time after i can kill someone with my axe and pick it up ? so in this scenario there are a lot to kill, so maybe if i kill 4 time with my axe can i get 8 xp ? Or is missread this ?
You get the 2xp when the card is played - not each time the effect is used.
starting with Scenario 4 we gain 6 exp per?
or from the start?
It's been long enough since I shot these that I don't recall, but if I don't say you gain 6 exp from the beginning, then you don't.
Man this scenario is so freaking hard
It's a tough one, but stick with it :)
So as a solo player using 2 characters, would i still draw a pair of goal cards and choose 1 for each character?
Yep!
@@WatchItPlayed So the goal cards just work on the honor system since you don't flip them right when you accomplish the goal but at the end of the scenario when you claim you acclaim you achieved it at some point during play?
@@lllorez Correct.
Hi Rodney, could I suggest a new game for you to review? Fire tower. There's a reprint and expansion on Kickstarter ATM too.
Thanks for the interest!
My new cards (Hatchet) with the number 1 at the top have blue circles next to some actions but not others, is this significant?
I'm not really sure what you're referring to, do you have a time stamp in the video you can direct me to with an example?
@@WatchItPlayed 5:20 has a dot on the red and blue card. Just something I noticed next to some of my cards and wasn’t sure if it mattered or why it’s different
@@grrtiger9481 Ah yes, I see what you mean. It has no purpose that I'm aware of!
That looks like a 'Jaws of the Lion' logo. Maybe it's there for future expansions so you know where your cards came from when you have a mixed deck.
so monster can use elements infused by players?
Hey Rav, it's been a little while since I shot this, but I believe that's what the video says - and if so - yep :).
Do we take a city event after completing each scenario now on ?
Yes.
Just finished playing scenario #4.
Solo mode.
It's was really fun & challenging.
But I died half way through the scenario.
It's cool, I'll try again tomorrow.
I did keep all gold coins, treasure & experience points thou right?
No perks I on stat sheets I presume.
I don't recall right off, but I do believe I cover this in one of the episodes.
is this game out now? i cant find it anywhere
It is, but it's a Target exclusive right now, for the first month.
@@WatchItPlayed ok no targets within 500 miles have it. fun times

Oh, this scenario took us a couple tries too - definitely a challenging one for us too!
so i can lie that i never stood near ally in my quest ? :D how can we track that..seems stupid
Some would argue that cheating in a board game is stupid. And I think that's what's meant to keep it from being a problem: as a player, don't be a lying cheater. If a player is a lying cheater in board games, then people shouldn't play games with them (and they should also go find another hobby). Know what I mean?
900th like!
Thank you kindly!

It’s meant to be a more approachable Gooomhaven, which I think it accomplishes, but that doesn’t mean it’s a ‘simple’ game :)
@@WatchItPlayed Thanks for addressing, Rodney. Keep up the great work. :)
