Cyberpunk 2077 RT Overdrive: A Tour of Night City - 4K 60FPS - RTX 4090

- Опубликовано: 18 окт 2024
- Our recent preview of the Cyberpunk 2077 RT Overdrive Technology Preview was relatively short and condensed - and we actually found that we had a lot of leftover b-roll that was simply too good not to share. John Linneman carried out the capturing and editing for this one, using an RTX 4090 in the RT Overdrive mode in 4K DLSS Performance Mode. We're aiming for 60 frames per second here, and we're not using DLSS 3 frame generation to do it...

When the visuals are this good you do start to notice the odd npc animations a lot more.
True 😅
Haha yeah the assets start to get funny when the lighting is this good too
Mannequin city, so much for immersion.
Visuals are the easiest to fix. Broken mechanics, lack of AI is way harder. That's why CD Project focuses on eyecandy graphics avalivable for 1% PC gamers with 4080/4090 GPU's - its the easiest path. ;)
that's why we need ai for the character so game developer could enable their game with this feature using the ai compute units available in NVidia and amd.
keep the overdrive videos coming; I could look at this stuff forever!
They should spend some time showing off how good cutscenes look now.
@@Phil_529 path traced Judy 👀
It's interesting how detailed the environment art, the world lighting and reflections are, then you see a character with an obviously looping idle animation or someone bumping into a an object along the side of the walkways, simply moonwalking in place, and it just takes you out of it. That's something I don't notice as much in older games, even when those games were considered state-of-the-art and it feels almost like just all of the strides taken to graphical fidelity only serve to highlight how seemingly little AI behavior and animation has improved by comparison. It's very bizarre.
Finally, people are starting to notice. It is why I haven't been as impressed this gen or even last gen in a lot of games. As the graphics improved, the animations, physics, and AI did not.
Indeed, graphics are the easiest to develop. Wait until the hardware is more capable and throw more and more demanding calculations at it. It's simplified of course, but you get the point. However, creating better AI, animations, more and more complex and lifelike systems requires the good ol' elbow grease, a whole lot of blood sweat and tears programming and testing them, which costs money, which is not acceptable in today's max-profit oriented, hyperoptimalized companies (that's why cyberjunk is missing half the promised game). Games peaked a while ago, for sure, and we can only hope complexity will be trending upwards once again in the future.
AI behaviour and animation in general have improved enormously. CDPR just ballsed it up, don’t take their failure as the standard for NPC tech/animation.
I seen this in real life on the subway. Definitely living in a simulation.
I wish NPCs would be on the level of GTA IV
it's weird. some of it looks almost life-like, but really... maybe it's because the lighting is so precise now... it makes the choice in materials really stand out. Having side walks that are a little too flat, running tangent to a wall that is also a little too perfectly flat, creating this seem that you always knew was there but now stands out even more.
Or the fact that some random objects in the scene are so low poly that they reflect the light in "eye-catching" ways.
100% agree. The lighting is fantastic, but the textures and models are shown up by it, and the disconnect is odd. It's akin to an old game that's been remastered with new lighting.
When the lighting is not accurate, they tend to have to overcompensate in terms of certain things to make the assets look good. Now that the lighting is more unified, they will have to art direct it so that everything reads clearly, and will most likely have to rework certain assets to give them a visual boost.
Some kind of uncanny valley
I think it might be due to using DLSS in "performance" mode, or maybe they even had to turn down some other settings to keep it at 60 fps smooth. I noticed everything looking washed up from the get go. There's this one "Driving in Cyberpunk 4K" video that looks way better than this at every point, and even though the lighting is probably inaccurate, I never really noticed.
Agree 💯. It makes the bad things stand out even worse. Like the terrible animations this game has, like why do people walk like that lol
Gotta give it up for the edit on this one. Fantastic stuff. A great mix of locations and scenery that really shows off what Path Traced lighting can accomplish. Exciting stuff! I'm not sure if I can get on board the Ray Tracing train again, but if so, count me in! Hopefully in 10 years, what, with Epic's Lumen, DLSS and now Frame Generation, this could be the standard soon enough!
When a new GPU comes out.... "Can your pc run overdrive native without dlss?" it's the new "can it run crysis"
in 10 years
@@cybersosis not even rn this applies
native is outdated and not relevant anymore. why is everybody Using native as Reference? we are using techniques like taa and fxaa for nearly 10 years.. with that beeing said, dlss looks better than native without any anti aliasing technique
@@adidkjf You are correct, although it is not completely pointless to see how a game runs natively, just mostly pointless. Running a game natively gives a good benchmark of were a card is at in terms of power. For example, on the 4090 if you get 20fps for this game at native, but then 5090 (when that card comes out) runs the game at 45fps at native then that could be a much more useful metric than how the game runs with DLSS enabled. Assuming that DLSS scales with power, which is does, when you can hover around 60fps with DLSS 2 performance enabled, on the 4090, while on a 5090 (again when that card comes out) you might be able to hover around 120fps or 60fps with quality enabled.
@@adidkjf taa and fxaa are antialiasing technics and are both done native, dlss is upscaling.
Features like these should be celebrated. The more games that get features like these, the less likely your favorite games will look dated in the years to come.
Limiting settings to current hardware has never made sense to me. Even simple stuff like capping maximum LOD distances or shadow resolutions seem pointless
Amen!
agree, devs should have a check in Advanced Setting unlocking Extreme modes. Granted this can often lead to engine restriction more than anything, engine was not made for 100s not 1000s of trees to be rendered but i still feel it should be unlocked for future gamers.
.CFG files have entered the chat
How does one celebrate something that gets 15 fps on a 4090? Even with a 4070 ti a 800 dollar gpu this is far out of my reach as a usable feature. I mean if I want the game to look like a buggy mess with things splicing sure I can try frame generation but I am good thanks I don't want the game to look like something from 2001 using that technology lol
This is why i love Valve, they don't bother with consoles because it just brings more headaches, in 2004 every games still has cubemapped reflections and baked shadows, while HL2 had dynamic shadows, planar reflections, all while having ragdoll physics, not a single soul use all that kind of tech at once before.
Everything becomes so grounded in the world when all these RT systems are in place! Just incredible stuff. For being such an early RT effort in the grand scheme of things, this is a foundational achievement!
Just think, in 10 years all games might look like this by default.

Let's make it happen
Someday, this will be the norm. And, someday, this great looking city will be filled with actual interactivity, with NPCs run by AI natural language models who will hold conversations with the player and have personalities. Imagine.
In a way it’s scary, we could also imagine the narrative of the game being elaborated in real time by IA depending on our actions.
It's coming will just take hopefully 10-15 years. With how fast ai is advancing it might be in the next 5 though. If we don't destroy ourselves before then or prevent silicon progress by tsmc being destroyed.

We're in the depths of the valley now, bois 👀

People are now just noticing this?
When you think, 40 years ago we were huddled around a small CRT TV/Monitor, loading in tape-based, or floppy disk games into a ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amstrad, etc..
The fact that it's really only 40 years, and look where we have come, madness. I don't know if I feel excited, or scared, for where we are heading. I was 13, in 1983. If I had shown this to my 13-year-old self, I think I might be both excited, and disturbed at the same time. Like a few others have said, the sound design is on another level.
Wonderful video, from DF. The small details haven't gone unnoticed. Such as, 7:42, the sudden bloom effect timed perfectly with the music. Excellent.
Night City is one of the most impressive virtual environments of all time. The level of detail and design in every nook is simply outstanding.
Then you bump into an npc or want to go into a building and the immersion is ruined
If only it wasnt an empty shell…
Everything but the npc interaction reminds me of the npc’s in a sonic game I like that you can now “speak” with the npc’s even if it is mostly a gimic but it this game had more npc dialogue options with conversation branches and more natural side quests by speaking with this characters and using some type of speech skill to get more info (or just hack your way to the info) that would be cool I mean imagine hacking a persons mind successfully and then it would knock down the points needed to get someone to tell you a secrete

I dont think anyone other then the devs can answer that. Could also just be a bug. They said multiple times that this is just the first glimpse of this tech and they will continue to improve it.
A lot of things pop-in at that moment. It's either a bug or a lod thing.
Looking closely frame by frame you can see some stuff closer to the car also pops into light there. I think what's happening here is that some geometry that was blocking the light (a building maybe) gets culled off-screen and removes the shadow for that object allowing the sunlight through.

I can smell my PC creating so much smoke and flames from RT Overdrive in Cyberpunk.
For most, that will happen simply watching this video.
Now imagine they add some sort of 'ChatGPT' type character interaction, so you could actually just walk up to any NPC and have a 'natural' seeming 'conversation'!
Now that's a neat idea, and it isn't completely out of the realm of possibilities.
This is sadly gonna require an always-on internet connection for quite some time.

Oh man, been watching the previous video like 3 times and just as i sit down to search for more Overdrive material this comes out! Thanks!!
None of the NPC’s look as though they’re physically grounded in the environment. And I’m not talking about the path tracing/lighting/shadows, I mean they don’t physically seem to be there. I don’t know if it’s the poor animation quality or if it’s something else, but they almost seem to hover along the surface of the ground, never physically making contact with it. It looks very video game-y. There are definitely games out there that really project a character’s physical presence in the world far better than what I see here.
Physics and animation are still so behind in gaming. People laugh at The Last Guardian for being janky but something I appreciated in that game were the animations and physics. There was real weight when walking or lifting. Things felt grounded.
Thanks for the excellent content 👌
Whenever a mid-generation console upgrade is mentioned, the common response is "what for? why do we need it?"

Honestly, after seeing it first hand in 4k HDR, DLSS quality, on a 4090, RUclips can't do it justice. This looks great, but it is truly a sight to behold when you have it running live in front of you.
Great video though, and hats off to CDPR for putting this game together well finally.
I feel like after ray tracing becomes fully optimized and future GPUs could handle it with good performance, we will reach a plateau for video game graphics. Even where we are right now is already plenty for many people. Games need to pursue other ways of achieving realism, like better animations, physics, and interactivity.
as a guy who usually enjoys "game with an art style"..I agree with this.
There is nothing wrong with pursuing such feats and this is just as much impressive and it sucks people bash it because "Realism bad,Art style better".
IF it becomes fully optimized
rtx IS optimized. the fact that this can run realtime at all is a testament to that. optimization doesn't mean "making it run on a potato", it means "reducing unnecessary overhead".
now maybe this game in particular has some overhead that could be reduced, i would expect that after any new feature is added, but even if the game becomes perfectly optimized, don't expect it to ever run well on most currently available cards. most will simply be too outdated to use at all, and eventually the 4090 will be looked at as the potato. path tracing is an inherently expensive rendering method, the only major way we'll get it to run at faster rates is more and more hardware acceleration
100%. Of all those animation and AI is what is furthest behind. It doesn't matter how realistic a game looks if all of the characters move and behave like animatronics
Sound. Ray-pathed sound ASAP please ! Having sound not bounced or occluded is such an immersion breaker.
Very snazzy but I did get the "old game at high resolution" vibe through most of it.

What an awesome showcase for the most ambitious game space ever created. Cyberpunk's rough launch resulted in a lot of people not seeing Night City for what it is - an absolute triumph of design and detail. Most open-worlds are just that - open plains, forests...square miles of relative empty. Imagine the amount of work and artistry that went into just one square-block of Japantown. The editing is amazing, it made me feel a bit emotional. Still yet have to play this game. I decided to wait as long as it takes to play the game when its at the best it can be. And that means waiting for things like patch 1.7
But i already watching so many ours of footage of this game world because its just so incredible haha...
I did play the game for two hours or so at launch. The feeling i got from the world was something i remember only skyrim having on me on my xbox 360 in 2011. This feeling of completely magical awe. The music and sound design of the world is just top-notch.
If you waited this long I would hold out until the Phantom liberty DLC drops too for (hopefully) an absolute insane / complete experience. I played at launch but never finished and am playing though it again now - it truly is unlike anything I've had the opportunity to experience. Has it's quirks for sure but world / characters / immersion / and how the story unfolds is really remarkable. Hope you have a similar experience!!
It's genuine cinematic quality visuals rendered in real time, locally. Its somewhat awe inspiring really. Nvidia did well for the very top end of this generation.
It's such a shame about anything below the 4090.
Man, there's a ton of gamers that didn't even exist during the era where the medium was experiencing massive technological and game design leaps every year/every other year. It's great that they get to be around when something this massive (realtime pathtracing, a decades long fever dream goal for gaming) becoming reality.
My only hope is that Nvidia and AMD push HARD on RT hardware before the next console generation starts in 2027. This way we can at least have a high RT baseline so games can just do some level of pathtracing. The sooner we leave the era of rasterized lighting techniques, the better.
Now that we have lighting figured out, lets start improving physics and gameplay features of new games.
All of that costs money to implement ;-)
Most developer studios would prioritize one over another. Sadly.
Impressive
I spent an hour fiddling with settings and if you're willing to cap the fps at 30 a RTX 3080 will run Overdrive RT at 1440p with the "high" graphical preset and DLSS set to quality. Dropping down to ultra performance puts you in the 50-60 window but that introduces too much artefacting and shimmering for my taste.

4:31 looks soo real to me. absolutely fantastic!
Nice upgrade, most of the stuff looks really good. However, there's still plenty of room for improvement. Apart from the usual problems with water I'd say one of the biggest issue in today's games is definitely skin. It's really a shame that we've come that far, but most characters still look like plastic dolls with muscle spasms. Let's hope this will be addressed soon!
Wouldn't only say skin, but animations in general, I've seen a comment on this video before and what he said was exactly what I thought and it was that older games had so much better animations than games nowadays because all they focus on is ugh end graphics and Ray Tracing, and it's mind boggling the animations somehow loom worse than some older games, it's crazy but true, so many games have such janky animations
This game doesn't look flat anymore now with the RT Overdrive that was one of the big issues i had with it along with the lighting. But now its full proper ray tracing added to it and it makes all the difference in every way. You can see this game just wasn't ready for even today's hardware its pushing the boundaries with the 4090 on overdrive rt. I would love to play this game now when the next new gen gpu come's out using quality DLSS or maybe you won't even need it. Very nice show case for this game

The difference is actually quite massive when YOU KNOW where rasterisation leaves a lot to be desired. Most people don't, so they just can't really judge properly & you get this shifted perspective that dictates rasterisation is already pretty much "perfect" (it's far from it).
Cyberpunk 2077 RT Overdrive = The Polished Turd Edition
The game still has a lot of bugs and glitches but has been improved a lot over time. I’ve recently upgraded my rig with a 4080 and 5800x and I can finally enjoy this game like I always wanted. I was blown away when I saw the impressive quality and the 100+fps achieved with dlss3
Amazing graphics but it’s a shame the city is so non interactive, it’s like a (pretty) cardboard cutout.
Because the focus was on story and quests, not bowling with cousin Roman 😂
It's a story driven game, not a real life simulator
Agreed. The AI animation while walking is also pretty bad. It always pulls me out of the experience when I see them bumping around each other.
Insane, stuff like this will take a decade or more to become the norm.
You/We do not know how much graphics cards are going to improve. We could be making an insane jump like from 10XX to 20XX in 2 to 3 years. The "first" ray tracing took 5 years to be featured more in most games while finally having the hardware to run it properly. I don't think this will take a decade with the current advancements we are getting. We already have DLSS 3 which is also already the future doesn't matter if you like it or not.
If we take typical gpu improvements, with Nvidia as example, the xx70 class tend to offer the same performance of last year's top offerings, so it would only really take 2 gpu generations for the 4090 levels of performance to be obtainable at a low end card that is somewhat available for mass consumers. What we see enabled today on a 3060 is what was considered absolute top tier performance only 4 years prior.
So in 4 years, this will be the norm. And perhaps even better.
I think it will be less. People thought that real time path-tracing in a AAA video game was at least 10 years away when Nvidia only introduced ray-tracing in 2018. But we got there in 5.
Without a side by side comparison, it just looks like how i remember it without overdrive
Yes thinking same..sometimes overall polly count and geometry is more important that just accurate lightning
@@cropredator1027 actually accurate lighting is obtainable without overdrive and without slashing your performance, modern lighting techniques have come a long way in the past 3 years. We already seen accurate light bouncing in many many games with raster techniques and these games won't benefit at all from overdrive. The only games that would benefit from overdrive will be older games developped on last gen. It will feel like a technological breakthrough when put side by side. But if you compare the overdrive lighting in cyberpunk with a modern game developped on current gen running modern rasterization, you won't see a difference.
the amount and quality level of the assets in this game are unreal
This is the type of experience I hoped for when I got the 4090. I love it!
Why the streets are so empty?
I have a question: if rays are traced pixel per pixel, doesn't lowering the internal resolution through DLSS reduce the GI quality?
Yeah probably how it gains so much performance
Yes, but seen as DLSS also reconstructs the image with an intelligent upscaler, so the quality loss is there, but much less than if just the resolution was lowered.
@@oropher1234 But the GI is still calculated from a lower resolution, meaning a lower literal tracing of rays, right? If that's the case, at least from a GI quality point of view, 1080p native and 1080p to 4k via DLSS, they both still calculate rays from 1080p. Or did I misunderstand?
@@lorenzoperrone760 you are correct, 1080p native and 1080p -> 4K trough dlss have the same amount of rays being traced. Gamers nexus tested this and GI quality doesen't seem to be affected that much compared to 4k native.
can we please get a HDR version, please?
Shout out to John for the choice selection of music on this one. Superb stuff 👌
It looks so good!! Some pop-ins in some parts of the city with light and shadows, but really good stuff
I have to say I think CyberPunk2077 is one of the best games of recent times. I’ll keep my original copy for many years. The atmosphere of Night City is so evocative, especially for those of the Blade Runner, Akira generation; layers of nostalgia.
This looks so damn stunning which makes it all the more jarring that the streets are so barren and lonely. On one hand, seeing Cyberpunk, one of my favorite games of all time, getting the full ray tracing treatment is unironically breathtaking but on the other hand, one of the staples of the Cyberpunk genre is the theme of overpopulation and the cities being extremely dense with other cars and people but in all these shots, as gorgeous and photo realistic as they look, you're usually able to count the amount of people there are in them on one or two hands, with the streets being completely abandoned in some instances. It's pretty jarring. I know the game has always struggled with high population density settings, especially when you try pushing it beyond the highest default setting, but I think if CD Projekt Red were to take the time to try and improve the population density and make it so people can push it further (while making sure the game doesn't break in the process) then these visuals would go from looking like a photo realistic look into what a cyberpunk city would look like to a photo realistic look into actually being there.
afaik there are mods that accomplish your wish
Using high crowd density I never encounter those problems. The city center has lots of cars in the day and at night there are less because the city, well, sleeps, but on some streets it's the opposite and suburbs don't have that many people to begin with, so they are way emptier (like Arroyo). It's dependant on the place and time, plus, by design, it would be very annoying for the player to encounter actual traffic jams, Cyberpunk is a game after all, not a simulation.
Sometimes I can barely even drive on the road in the game due to how much traffic and NPC's there are lol and I've found that it usually gets more quiet at night so I'm not really understanding the problem when people bring this up, use the higher crowd density setting
They're adding an "astonishing" crowd setting that goes over high. It's already in the game but inaccessible by default, but on the Nexus there is a mod to unlock it. The streets are PACKED with this setting, even my 5600 struggled to keep 60 fps with it at times, but it's completely worth it in my opinion
I imagine they turned crowds and traffic down to avoid impeding their camera movements and shots.
Could you capture this in HDR as well using ShadowPlay? I'd really like to see how good that looks!
Can't wait to try this with with my 4090. Cyber Punk is my favorite game
