where was his mummy? :( god bless you for saving him im a major horse lover have owned two horses in my life i hate seeing people hurt these beautiful animals
+goga bogovi - Yes Chance grew up happy and healthy with a surrogate mother horse, and he turned into a super little guy... I can't believe he's six years old now.
(I would never) if I ever tried to abandon my horse id only last about a meter up the road and then come sprinting abd crying all the way back and tell it 'I'm so sorry' constantly
Hello, wonderful job.... Have you administered him Colostrum ? by bottle or by another process??? how many time you bottle feed him and how much ? have you used another species milk or horse milk substitute... I have tried to save one few months ago, but he didn't survive more than few days... i think i fed him too much milk :'o ... keep doing good things...
I have to say, I was never a horse person, per se, but how could any body leave such a beautiful, innocent little living being on the side of the road to die. Many years ago, I did have two very faithful dogs. One, was a founding. I had him for 15 yrs. It breaks my old heart to think of that poor little thing left alone to die. WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE do such cruel things ????
I haven't seen where it was a human that left the foal. Could be they live where there are wild herds, and the foal was unable to keep up with the herd for some reason. While the mare will try and stay with the foal, the stallion will often force her to leave it behind to protect the rest of the herd.
I hope these little tips will be of use to someone . When a foal is orphaned, the best chance he can have if you can get a foster mother for him. I mean by this a mare that has just lose her foal. The earlier this can be done the better, sometimes you may have to put the request over the radio and normally around foaling time you will get a response. The terms agreed among the parties, are up to yourselves. To get the foster mare to take the new foal, milk from her udder can be rubbed over the foals body, and even some of her urine. this gives the orphan foal the smell of the mare you are wanting to adopt the foal. Another method I have seen, and was successful, is that the dead foal is skinned, and the skin of the dead foal tied over the living foal for about 2 days. This usually works. Although not a nice think to do, but the whole objective, is for recipient mare to take and rear the orphan foal as quickly as possible. This can be a stressful time for all concerned. The owner of the orphan foal, the owner of the mare that has lost the foal, and the putting together the new mare and the new baby foal. Hope this wee bit of advice helps someone out there, From. Ireland.
Another quick way to do it (since the rubbing milk on the baby or the urine, from what i understand, doesnt work very well and no one really wants to have the skin of a dead foal on another foal), is to dose the mare with prostaglandin, induce the LOVE hormone... Might need to be restrained and watch the mare and foal for a bit, but normally it works within 24 hours
Winifred Thompson it doesn’t even need to be a recent foaled mare, if the mare is a proven good mother and is in good health she can be given two injections that mimic birth hormones. The foal is introduced in a safe calm manor multiple times over a few days and the mothering instinct kicks in. This is a fantastic thing to behold.
+Lucia Riordan - Chance was found abandoned at the side of a road. The whereabouts of his mother was never known, but he is a happy and healthy 6 year old horse now!
+amzee1984 - Hi and sorry for the very late reply to your question. Chance is a grown up 6 year old now, happy and healthy, having lived on 160 acres with many other horses. He was adopted about a year ago by a wonderful young woman who took him home to Switzerland with her. He continues to live in a wonderful environment and with lots of horse friends.
+Frances Sweeney - Yes, Chance is 6 years old now. He had a wonderful start at the ranch (160 acres and over 30 horses) and was a happy and healthy fellow. Chance was adopted by a really wonderful young woman who was visiting from Switzerland, and he joined her in Switzerland about a year ago. He did very well with the long journey, and he continues to live happily and healthily in a wonderful environment for horses, and plenty of horse-friends (I see updates about him on Facebook quite frequently).
