    I'm just glad FFG didn't make me buy 3 different starter sets to get complete playsets of the exclusive cards, which is more than I can say for any of their LCGs.

      Or their Star Wars RPG! To be completely fair the IDEA is you just play the one book because each one plays a very different genre, but it's tough if you wanna play a career from book A but the race you like is only in book B.

    Kohdok, "Normal" people (and make no mistake, no matter how much we as ccg collectors may keep games alive, the target market is always the "normies") throw away their packaging.

    • @Kohdok
      @Kohdok  9 месяцев назад +8

      Really? People buy a game of Monopoly and throw the box away?
      "Don't forget to chuck the box for the Uno cards in the bin, honey!"
      Wow, normies are so weird.

    • @luissantiago4438
      @luissantiago4438 9 месяцев назад +9

      @@Kohdokobviously for a boxed board game you wouldn't throw away the package. But why would you keep and container for a tcg or ccg? You can go and do the same thing with packaging for MTG Yugioh or even Pokemon and get the same complaints. Comparing it to something like uno or monopoly where you aren't going to be adding cards regularly is ridiculous and some serious reaching.

    • @Kohdok
      @Kohdok  9 месяцев назад +2

      @luissantiago4438 Doesn't really matter what game it is, putting it away when you're not using it is a totally normal thing to do.
      Most TCG boxes are held shut by 1~2 pieces of tape or a plastic wrapper and work like perfectly normal boxes once opened. And a normal, usable box is especially common and desirable when something is meant to be your first purchase; a "Starter" item, if you will.
      Forcing me to destroy the box beyond being able to use it that way is weird. And it's not weird to say that. Saying that the added effort taken to make their box this awful is "Okay, actually" is the actual reaching.

    • @luissantiago4438
      @luissantiago4438 9 месяцев назад +7

      @@Kohdok Again it is definitely reaching considering the starter set comes with what you need to store the cards, the main component of the starter set. Again its a tcg not a board game. Arguing you cant reuse the box is the equivalent of complaining you cant reuse a booster pack package to store the cards in. Its just idiotic.

    • @Kohdok
      @Kohdok  9 месяцев назад +3

      @@luissantiago4438 Okay. Lemme break this down again: When I am done playing with a game, I like to pack it up and put it away. Putting something away when you're done with it is totally normal. Expecting to be able to pack something back into its box when you are finished with it is a totally normal expectation. I thought that was easily understood. Not sure why it's not landing here.
      Fantasy Flight had to go OUT OF THEIR WAY to make this box useless. It is very, very weird to defend that design choice when it is actually easier to make something functional that can stow the parts it was sold with.
      Do you just never put away your games? Are they just scattered all over your home? Or are they some sort of Schrodinger's Game where they are simultaneously Packed Up and Without a Box at the exact same time?

  • @MrMickio1

    I dont know Kohdok's familiarity with FFG but as a past-president of a board game club i have opened, played and organised A LOT of FFG games and their boxes ALWAYS sucks. It sucked then, it sucks now and itll suck in the future. They almost always use the same few box sizes regardless of the game so it never fits properly, it cant hold expansions, everything is held loose, FFG games are infamous for using tons and tons of cardboard tokens and chits and giving you NOTHING to organise them forcing you to ritualistically invent your own ziplock-based system of putting a bajillion tokens in different baggies.
    Im not saying that FFGs games are bad, far from that but their box designs are universally bad across the board. Kohdok should learn this now or be eternally frustrated with them.

    • @EmperorPylades
      @EmperorPylades 9 месяцев назад +7

      I want to argue with you, but I can't. FFG make or made some of my favourite games of all time (Battlestar Galactica, Twilight Imperium, Arkham Horror), but you're right, all of them required about a zillion Ziploc baggies to hold all the components and cards together.

    • @Kohdok
      @Kohdok  9 месяцев назад +13

      I mention in the video that I've talked on it multiple times. I hope you noticed how I showed the L5R box isn't tall enough to stow the cards, but the more recent kits(Marvel, Arkham Campaigns) have boxes that can stash the cards, expansions, and everything else.
      In other videos, I even mention the cottage industry around fixing their stupid boxes.

  • @Big_Dai
    @Big_Dai 9 месяцев назад +4

    😂 The passive-aggressive aggressive overview of the cardboard box design.. I'm here for it! I agree 100%
    EDIT: I think I would do the same as them if I ever designed a TCG. Make the starters valuable and with unique pieces! How often the Starters are laughed at for not being a purchasable product by pro-consumers? This way, you hook 'em and get 'em too! More money.

    I don't understand why you think the game needs special cards or tokens for indicating ground and space arena? The units in play indicate that. And if there are no units in play, it doesn't matter.

  • @AcroxShadow

    Honestly I've found the packaging plenty servicable. You can comfortably fit both deck boxes inside along with the mats and rule book. The only major issue is not having a proper storage for the cardboard counters, which I just fixed with a tiny box that originally held some cologne. Sure you have the one side loose, but it's certainly not worthy of a nearly 5 minute rant.

  • @justinschmelzel8806
    @justinschmelzel8806 8 месяцев назад

    They actually have a rule about where the ground and space is. The rule is the first person to play a unit decides which area is which. By playing their unit to one side they have specified that side to be space or ground (whichever the unit was). Until the first unit is played the arena doesn't matter.

    They get you to buy the starter box by including two reasonably well constructed decks, for leaders that are exclusive to this product (or the pre-release packs
    ), at a reasonable price point, that require no additional support, if you don't want to get too deep into the game.

  • @juramcclain666

    Given Ffg's history with not supporting card games after a few years, do you think it's worth the risk to get into this one? Buying keyforge and l5r only to have them drop the ball with longevity makes me skeptical.

    • @jellyfishgamestudios
      @jellyfishgamestudios 8 месяцев назад +2

      I agree, though it really feels like they have learned from their mistakes and are really going all in on this one. They have almost 3 years worth of sets already designed, they are supporting multiple popular formats and have organized play set up from day 1, and this might sound dumb but them doing all original art instead of recycling their vast library of assets to me is the biggest thing🤣

I know you are pretty negative on it, but I really enjoy the game and I think the latest set really got the game to a good place in terms of mechanics and meta. It may be a cash grab but it can also still be a good game. That said the current problem is a huge first player advantage in high level competitive play. I’d love to see a video from you about that problem and ways to resolve it, even if the focus isn’t primarily on the causes and potential fixes for Lorcana.

      @Kohdok your point is well understood, you don't need to make it again. You understand that most people don't do this with TCGs. And specifically in this case, the starter box comes with 2 deck boxes. So even though the retail shelf box is trash, inside you find 2 boxes that fit the included decks. So is it disappointing for you? Yes, but why rant when they still included storage for the cards with your purchase.
