  • LAST SATURDAY WAS "JEFF DAY" IN NICE! Since it was Jeff's birthday, I let him decide EVERYTHING we were going to do and see, anywhere he wanted to go. We started with a lovely breakfast at a new restaurant we had never gone to, near Place Garibaldi....and the day evolved. Come with us for a day of exploring Nice, some old things and some very new!

    Hi! I'm An Scott. I'm a happily retired 70 year old woman with my “golden years” on the horizon, living the “good life”, whatever that is on any given day, with my fun husband Jeff, and our “bossy” little Yorkie, Bella. We have recently moved from the USA to the French Riviera, the beautiful south of France, and made our new home in Nice France.
    Moving from the USA to a foreign country is no small “project”. Through my videos, we’ve been taking you through the process, sharing the steps, talking about what we’ve learned and the ups and the downs. And now, we continue to share our life, our new life, here in Nice, getting settled, adjusting to the “French” way of doing things, dealing with the French “red tape” and all the while, making every wonderful day in Nice, the best day ever…

      We aren't really people who would normally walk up to strangers on boats, here in France, anyway, to talk to them, unless maybe we also kept a boat at a marina and were talking to our immediate neighbors. Talking to people in France is not like the USA where you might say hi to everyone you pass. They are very private people and don't do small talk, chit chat, or start conversations with people they don't know. That is a "tourist thing". It would be unusual, otherwise. It's really a different culture in France that we Americans have to respect. To hear more conversations between French people, I think you'll need to come to France and find a good reason, meaning at a shop or business, to start a conversation. 😊

    • @lindaowen6761

      Yes you are right. Guess I just wanted to hear some interactions.

    • @postcardsfromourgoldenyears
      @postcardsfromourgoldenyears  Месяц назад

      @lindaowen6761 I intentionally try not to shoot video when I'm interacting with people unless we ask permission in advance and usually in those cases, it's too busy, too noisy and I would feel like I'm bothering people, when they are trying to deal with customers. In those situations they really don't want to be in people's videos.Often they don't like it when I just video their fruit stands. They give me a "look". I prefer to keep them in the background. And really, our channel is about "us" and our new life adjusting to the new world and customs around us.

    Happy Birthday Jeff. A great way to spend the day. I love the Chagall Museum in the hills there. I head to Beaulieu-sur-Mer in a few weeks. Can't wait. Thanks for showing the new train station. Jeff, these old buildings with the wires outside would not pass code in the USA?

    • @postcardsfromourgoldenyears
      @postcardsfromourgoldenyears  Месяц назад

      We're not sure what wires/old buildings you're referring to in this video. If you mean the electrical wires in the older sections of Nice, Jeff says they would be fine in the US. In older communities in the US, that's how they connected electricity to houses, before they started running the wires underground and they still exist in lots of areas all over the US. In our last neighborhood in Florida, we had wires outside, as well. Here in France, it's the same thing. The buildings are very old, here long before electricity was around, so when they decided to hook up the buildings to electricity, they just ran the wires outside.

      No, we haven't. All of my videos are shot with my cellphone, which doesn't have that feature. I really like that we are "keeping it real". Just two people taking videos of our life on our cellphones. We don't use professional camera equipment. We aren't doing this as a professional business. Have you covered where you are renting? I’m planning on visiting Nice in November and scouting out everything for retirement in April 2025. Your videos have been very helpful.

    • @postcardsfromourgoldenyears
      @postcardsfromourgoldenyears  Месяц назад

      We're in the center of Nice. We prefer not to share "exactly" where, for our privacy. It's a good idea to come in November, to scout around but don't plan on looking for an apartment that early. First, there is such a shortage of rentals, that anything available in November will be gone in days. In addition, don't set your heart on one part of Nice. When you get your long stay Visa and you have your Dossier ready to represent, and the guarantor in place, there may only be 1 or 2 available apartments and not in the areas at the top of your list, You need to take a look at numerous areas and be open to accepting a rental anywhere in those areas or you'll be waiting a long time to find a place. For starters, unless you are trying to book an apartment from someone from the USA who owns here, chances are they won't consider even showing their apartments to you without first prequalifying you with the dossier and guarantor in place. There may be half dozen people chasing every available apartment in the areas everyone wants to live. You need to be ready to sign the lease "that day" theoretically. We came last November hoping to see apartments for this April and learned the reality, We didn't start looking, nor would the agent we worked with, from Adrian Leeds agency, start searching for us, until after we applied for our Long Stay Visas. So yes, come in NOvember and look around but don't count on looking for anything till everything is in place and you're ready to sign a lease. Good luck to you,

    Did you say "unfortunately" or fortunately about the yachts being seized?

    • @postcardsfromourgoldenyears
      @postcardsfromourgoldenyears  Месяц назад

      Frankly, I don't
      recall what I said. If I said unfortunately, it was simply because they were no longer in Nice's harbor, as they used to be in the early days of Jeff and I visiting Nice. Years ago, the harbor was often filled with daily comings and goings of the most beautiful yachts. Now we may only see one every now and then. It is unfortunate that because most of those original yachts we used to see in the South of France, were seized, that we don't see as many yachts like that in the port nowadays. My comments had nothing more to do with the yachts than our ability to see as many of them in the harbor as we used to.

    Was the yacht that interested you named Odessa? I was there yesterday and I was walking with 3 other Americans and we were wondering if that was a seized boat.

    • @postcardsfromourgoldenyears
      @postcardsfromourgoldenyears  Месяц назад

      No, we showed the name on the yacht in our video. It was "Golden Odyssey". I don't think it's there anymore. It was not a seized boat. The seized boats are long gone from Nice. I doubt they were in Nice when they were seized. I was following the seized boats on a RUclips channel that follows yachts and yacht news, for a while when the seizures were happening. They were often seized at sea or while fueling at some ports and taken to the country that seized the boats . That was at least a couple of years ago. The yacht we saw at the end of April was owned by a Chinese billionaire, as I noted in our video.

    Happy belated Birthday Jeff🎉. The cake looked amazing ,did it taste as good as it looks? So excited to see your adventures in your new home of Nice. In the port there is a boat cruise that goes along the coast that is fun to take, maybe you have already been on it. How do you like your apartment so far ? Looking forward to seeing more about your new home.

      Yes, the cake WAS as good as it looked. We love our apt but will be happier when our new couch and 62 boxes from the USA arrive so we can finish unpacking. No idea about boat cruises yet. Most days are still a little chilly for boat cruises for us. I believe there is a ferry to Saint Tropez we may take one day

    I am looking at the Porte area for a rental. However, I did not want to be too far from carre d'or and city center area. About how far is walking from La Porte to Jean Medecine, etc., Messena area. I am a walker and try to walk about an hour every day. Would it be necessary/reasonable to take the tram from La Porte to these above-areas for errands and things like that. Thanks... While I Live Vicariously Through You.

    • @postcardsfromourgoldenyears
      @postcardsfromourgoldenyears  Месяц назад

      It would require a tram ride or a very long walk from the port area to the center of Nice or Carre d'Or. The tram can take you to most areas within 20 min. Walking, it might be an hour walk depending on how fast you walk and where you want to go. Not sure why you'd need to run errands in the other areas. The Port area has lots of restaurants, cafes, bars, shops.
