I'm here now from the US. I'm so impressed with Gdansk. I get a sense this would be a great city to call home and live a nice life. I feel this city sets a great example of what being civilized is. It's a healthy balance of everything. Clean and safe without being boring. It's cool without being pretentious.

As a person who has lived in Gdańsk for almost a year now, I agree that it's a great city, especially if you compare it to where I lived before (village in Ukraine lmao). I don't live in the nicest part of the city, it's quite dirty here and not so safe but I still like it. Tho there are some downsides, first being the size of the city, it's really big, you better have a car, otherwise you'll have to go by bus/tram, and the tickets are quite expensive. And the other downside is that it's quite cold here, but I got used to it already so I'm fine. :D

Maybe it was better that it was underestimated by tourists because it could cultivate its own identity without Western influences. Now I see that when it comes to cuisine, there are a lot of attractions for tourists, they have nothing to do with Polishness. I know, I know, some people will be outraged, it's the 21st century.

The empty spaces between the streets are the result of WWII. Gdańsk was destroyed in 86%. Many outbuildings of old buildings have not been rebuilt. The city was destroyed by the Soviets after the so-called 'liberation'. Many other Polish cities suffered a similar fate. You read The Tin Drum by Gunter Grass. He's a Nobel Prize winner.

Kinda subjective. Overrating (or underrating) is often matter of "numbers of tourist". Many of popular cities and towns are pretty, with great people, with lots of local experiences... just overtourism and the tourist offer is ruining it sometimes. And important fact: Gdansk was almost destroyed after WWII (just about 10-15% remains), Prague stayed practically untouched (except some historical buildings). And that's for some visitors important also (it may be "genius loci"). To call a city with such a rich history and countless monuments as overrated... is a bit short-sighted. And nothing against Gdansk of course.

Johannes, you have very advanced mycosis on your face and forehead. You need to go to a doctor urgently. There are also good special ointments for skin mycosis in the pharmacy. In Poland there are better medicines in pharmacies than in Sweden, it's a pity that you didn't go to a pharmacy in Poland to buy a good ointment for fungal infection, I'm surprised that you neglected your face so much because your mycosis is very advanced and now it will be difficult for you to cure it.

Mandu - good choice. Those guys have been around and are usually PACKED. Sourdough soup is also a good call - this is a very typical Polish soup. Even Italians liked it and those that I work with are rather conservative when it comes to cuisine.
Btw I used to work near the place you stayed at (also Dlugie Ogrody) and funny enough - 2006 it was a place where you could get stabbed and generally a very shady area. Since then it became more touristy and the apartments there are stooopid expensive.
Another good place to visit for food would be Rednek Burgers (you actually passed it) - their burgers, pulled pork and zapiekanki are to die for and I can honestly say they are the best.
As a local, given you have some skin condition - I would not bath in that water. Especially when it gets warmer there is a high risk of cyanobacteria in the Puck Bay (which is where Gdansk is located). I mean I would not get in the water so there's that.
Malbork Castle was a good idea. Did you also hit your head at this one particular point? I remember listening to the automatic guide saying 'careful' a split second before i whacked my head on the ceiling in one of the passages there :D

    • @realvoluntaryexile

Ohh good recommendations! I'll definitely try them next time 😄 Hahaha, well good thing to know about the water! Fortunately my skin didn't act up more from it anyway!
