    I think AI will be very helpful in executing important parts of the creative process which are not the main focus of individual indie devs, allowing them to focus on their favourite parts of the game dev. For example, it's entirely plausible that AI will be able to easily animate models and sprites (if it can't already), giving devs who are more focused on programming more time to spend on parts that are more interesting to them. It will probably also get to the point where it can read code which just isn't doing what you want it to and, based on a prompt, suggest ways to fix it. It will undoubtedly lead to a whole load of low-effort games being pumped out, but it will also hopefully take a lot of the pain out of game dev.

      I think some of the animosity stems from the fact that the art side of development doesn't really stand to gain much from it. Programmers without art skills get assets to use, but artists with no programming skills get nothing.

      Don't get *too* excited about that. We already use AI to generate a lot of stuff like procedural levels, and even movement animations. For that matter, the automated behavior of NPCs is, of course, a form of AI. And 60% of the time, it works every time. The issue arises in the 40% of cases where the AI does something that's glitchy, buggy, unintuitive, or just plain breaks the game. Characters get hung up, characters faces start being rendered upside-down or look like nightmare fuel, AI-generated voices will hilariously mispronounce a word here and there. Procgen'd levels will become roads to nowhere (or just be ugly and un-fun). Etc. etc. etc.
      Now, if you have a large enough team to manually 'check' the AI's work and aren't relying on it, that's fine, you can correct it and retrain the model. What's going to happen, though, is a lot of low-effort games where they don't bother, along with a lot of solo devs trying to make Skyrim by themselves and letting their reach massively outpace their grasp.

      @@TheJungaBoon there are already AI's that do code generation based on prompts, programmers won't be safe forever either... also not all programming methods are difficult to learn, and there is always the possiblity that tools that let you write code easily will have their run time cost minimized, having pushed code through an AI 'compiler' that optimises it.

    My problem with AI art is precisely how the people behind it are feeding the AI database with, which is hundreds of thousands of pieces of art made by humans with no consent and no return at all. The "tool" isn't the AI, it's us, the people using it. We are training the AI to decide what is considered good and what not.
    I wish, the guys behind these "tools" considered giving artists an option or a revenue to the artist's artworks being used to train their machine. Which, obviously, they wouldn't. Also, if everything is considered good, then none of it is.

    • @strgn1360
      @strgn1360 Год назад +7

      Theoretically, the most humane and respectful AI database will collect just Public Domain information, which is at the same time a huge amount of it. Honestly, I don't know what to think about AI utilizing my work for an instance, because I can't get mad at someone making artistic studies based on my work, and diffusion models are making a restoration-type of work from noise with help of a description, not a recreation of a thought process behind creative decisions and not brushstrokes. Diffusion models will not replace entry-level artists in nearest future, and to be honest they are able to help them to achieve better results (both through photobashing and by providing references) and certainly will not replace experienced artists.
      Also my early concerns were more about randomly receiving perfect recreation of someone's original artwork and though it is technically possible, it will be somewhat like randomly finding a page from a book on libraryofbabel - extremely impressive, yet still flawed with artifacts of AI generation.

    • @ChannelOfJoris

      Hundreds of thousands is not the scale you should be thinking on, it's closer to hundreds of billions. I agree that it'd be fair to pay & credit the artist for their work, but it's just not possible at any scale needed to train decent AI. If every artist had their payment info online at exactly the same place then you could, but with that many artists they wouldn't even make a single cent per person

    When I checked newest image generators this year first thing I thought "Oh, imagine how many kickstarter scams it will make possible"
    But interacting with it I saw a lot of different opportunities on freeing up time from photohunting for textures and generating advertisements and packages for filling scenes with details. Now, AI is firmly incorporated in my workflow and I'll be honest, working with it can be both harder and faster, harder because it is different type of workflow where you basically engage in a dialog with an RNG faster because it can happen between your active working sessions, harder because it requires me to learn and copy it's style to touch up parts I'm not happy with to finish the job, faster because I'm not doing all of it. For a lot of artists AI in it's current form will not be a handy solution, same about 3d posing functionality for reference poses and 3d backgrounds, 3d models for armor and objects e.t.c.
    But I personally see AI generated images as a mean to speed up the work of indie productions for extremely low price.
    I don't really see how "Cheap low effort cash grabs" can get worse than asset flipping though, so I'm quite comfortable with assuming that it will get quite bad, but not in a worst way in history. We all saw how low it can get, and I'm pretty sure hitting new low will be pretty hard.
    TL/DR: AI is a cool tool that will help to make cool games, it can't get worse than uninspired asset flips with no user input.

      @@Divo_dev The thing is... we humans invented visual art precisely because just saying the words to another person (or a machine) doesn't convey the same thing as *showing* them an image of what's in your head. I can tell you from experience, I've been told what a senior designer wanted a 3D model to look like, and a freaking 500 word email didn't get the point across as well as him just drawing up a quick sketch and shooting it my way. I was producing *good* art, but not as close to the *right* art that he had in mind.
      AI will undoubtedly outpace humans at producing photorealistic art of real things, because photography already does that, but it can't see what's in your imagination. The whole point of artistic expression is to convey things that go beyond words.

I do not see value in it other than what I’ve stated before, using it as a replacement for art isn’t a good idea, it would be better to ask a friend or just get a free asset pack, because at least it’s something that isn’t just a hodgepodge of others’ work. I also think AI art should be treated the same way tracing or stealing is, it’s just less apparent to where the source is from.

      It's funny that you call that "fake AI" since all of "AI" is just fake. True AI for the foreseeable future is nothing but science fiction. What we have, while impressive at what they do, are quite limited machine learning algorithm programs.

    As with a bunch of these tools the licensing and legal bullshit set up around them will make it easier for anyone who isn't paying attention to the licensing and legal implications of the tools they're using to make games, while only making it marginally cheaper for the people who are actually paying attention.
    It will bring in mostly low effort garbage, and when some game does become successful using these tools there will be a highly controversial lawsuit about it as the people who made the ai take all the money from the people who actually put effort into the game

    • @Cryptic0013
      @Cryptic0013 Год назад +1

      Indeed. Especially since you can't copyright the content generated by these AI. It's really not going to be any 'worse' than (or all that different from) the existing issue of people going around glomming up cheap and free asset packs and using them to churn out low-effort games.

    It's kinda funny, that I am gifted in art but logical thinking is my major weakness, so programming is off limits until I cram it into my brain somehow. Seeing AI excell in all the things I'm good at, I'm starting to feel like I'm becoming useless in this world.

      Current AI solutions, and I believe for a long time any AI solution, cannot create consistent art. If you need the same scene from two different shots, or the same character, you cannot do that. This is because I think the AI right now works by having a bunch of noise that is common to the template, and then denoises it, filling in the details differently each time (which I believe is where the bulk of the AI comes in). I am not an expert on this though, just read up some stuff.
      Most likely it will help smaller developers that cannot get their hands on art to begin with, as well as help with prototyping. It will probably hurt artists to some degree, but at the same time, might help artists prototype faster too.
      Just trying to provide a slightly more optimistic viewpoint of it. I am aware that things might not turn out like this at all :/

      @@anopeygame5843 you just need to learn ai a bit more. i have ai tools that can repair blurry photos and i can also create a very similar likeness using the ai and tell it that i want it to stay 90-95% similar to original image and it will just fill in details instead of changing the face structure. theres some ai already in the works for animating the faces but it does not look very good yet. i think those are another year or 2 down the line but microsoft just came out with a cool face re-creator

      @@anopeygame5843 yeah, ai can make something that looks very similar but can't recreate every detail with precision,like i saw it make images of a character but it missed a major detail in all of them
      They seem to be able to create good looking images but lack consistency

    We continue to sacrifice the value of peoples and their work at the alter of capitalism. AI and robots and engineering should be used to replace jobs no one wants to free people up from work, not to replace creative fields. Instead we all work more hours for less money and consume mass produced bullshit while corporations rake in record profits. AI art can die in a ditch and the world will be better off
