As a southpaw, I see a whole different advantage to that gizmo! Right-handers wouldn't notice, but the direction the line winds on and off the spool of all spinning reels is the wrong direction for holding/releasing with the left hand. Take my word for it, that is a very cool idea for correct handed people like me!!
Been using my Breakaway Cannon for years - love it. I would recommend when you're using more then 4-5 ounces using a shock leader (a mono or floro leader that is long enough to wrap around the spool twice in the "cast ready" position - it should be 1 1/2 times lb. rating of main line - ex. 20 lb. main line / 50 lb. shock leader). That way you won't bonk your buddy with the weight when it snaps off when your loading the rod trying to hit that aircraft carrier.
Good point but only reason I disagree is because you will be using some type of line to line knot that will have to travel thru your guides and with casting heavy weight that line is traveling at a high speed, when the knot meets a few guides the line between the knot and the spool began to slow down and increases the chances of the dreaded wind-knots.
I bought one of those a couple of month's ago to test out. You really feel like there is nothing holding you back on a cast and can really put some muscle behind a throw. I used electrical tape to secure it to the rod and only loop it around once. Works like a champ. Going to buy another one for my other 'heaver'.
Wish I knew about this. First time surf fishing the other day and braid cut right through my index finger. Luckily I brought a smaller setup that I wade with in the surf and was still able to throw some spoons. Man! That hurt. Loved the carrier image and the quiet, "don't wanna sink it." Funny
It is amazing how easy it is to cut your finger. A friend asked me to try his rig the other day and it really hurt to cast it! I'm spoiled. Yea... those sailors need to watch out!
The official instructions are to wrap the line around the spindle once. However, if your drag is fully tightened simply arching the line over the spindle and setting the trigger is all that’s needed. It’s quicker to set, and the reel prevents any slippage. Works for righties and lefties. It also is ok to install the trigger a couple inches up from the reel if that’s a more comfortable hand position for you. The things work like champ!
I have 50# braid on my Okuma 12' with a Daiwa BG 5000 reel. I'm generally casting a good 4oz weight plus the bait. In order to get the cast cannon to "hold" until I release, I must wrap 3 times around the spindle. You might have to experiment with your own rig to make sure you wrap enough. The key is you just don't want the line to zip around the spindle while the trigger is still set. You only want that weighted line releasing when you release the trigger. Best casting tool known to man.
LOL, bonk a sailor... Nick is a great guy. He has a channel and shows different techniques and gear that he in constantly creating. The website is full of all kinds of goodies
My casting cannon is a god-send for my 12' Okuma surf rod with 50# braid mainline. I was just surf casting yesterday and took it off my rod to remember what it was like to cast without it. Two things occurred... 1) I failed to cast anywhere near as far and 2) I burned the hell out of my index finger on my casting hand. I'm lucky I didn't cut it. Well, didn't take me long to put it back on with a couple zip ties and be happy for it. I just bought my wife one for her 10' Okuma. She has yet to try it but that will happen this weekend. Believe me, just buy this, don't think twice, this is something that should come standard on surf rods.
I don't mean to hijack this post but the tool that you're using is known as a bionic finger. It's not really necessary to add it to a light spinning rod as you not really gonna throw heavy lures and baits with it and the chances of you cutting yourself is very rare. It's more comfortable and quicker to use a casting glove with lighter braids up to 0.24mm. Here in South Africa we normally equip our large grinder setups with bionic fingers due to us throwing larger baits with sinkers ranging from 5ounce to 9ounces. Another tip when casting is not to throw straight from behimd you but to rather swing the rod around you causing the extra momentum to make you lure/bait fly larger distances. Cheers all the way from South Africa
Interesting name! I was not aware of that. I only use this on my heavy surf rods because, as you point out, it is not needed elsewhere. I tried not wrapping but the Ardent Gliss line is so slick that I had to wrap once to make it work. Thank you for the casting tip!
