  • 24 Hours Makes A Huge Difference for Spanish Mackerel Fishing!
Spanish Mackerel were the current target fish, but I was unable to get out on the day that the fish were really firing. My fishing buddy Fred managed to go out fishing on the better day and he "bagged out" on the Spanish Mackerel. 3 per person over 75cm is the state bag limit here.
When I went out the next day at the very same spot and with the exact same techniques of using live bait, not only was the weather far worse, I got harassed by sharks and couldn't land one of the mackerel I managed to hook! I even managed to break a rod again trying to retrieve my rig from a estimated 3 metre plus shark.
That aside, Fred did very well and got three good-sized Spanish Macks. He also has started shooting some video- and for that I say thanks! It's good to add some variety to the channel, so thanks again Fred for letting me post your video on this channel.
Spanish Mackerel look a lot like the King Mackerel caught in the US. They are related but a different sub species. The fishing techniques however would be the same.
The shark population does not seem endangered around here in SE Queensland! We have laws here that state we cannot keep sharks over the 1.5m size, plus there are a whole range of species that are completely protected. I have never taken a shark home.
From the power of the pull from the sharks that took my Spanish Mackerel on this day, they would have to be in the 3M size or larger! The Spanish being caught were all in the 1M plus size, so it takes a pretty big shark to take one whole!

Sensational catch Fred! Thanks for vid Hayesy, especially the last few seconds. Even though Ive been fishing with Fred twice I never really "saw him" under all of our sun armour ;-) Watching Fred put the macks on the table was like the moment Darth Vaders mask was removed 🤣🤣🤣 At least now I can recognise him in the street!

Had the same thoughts myself. However after the broken rod I consider I no longer owe them anything! Mongrels…

    Another great video!
Paul, with all the time out on the water on your wave runner, have you installed a toe tap on your ski in the event you needed to be toed back to shore??

Thanks Hal. Yes I had a tow tap installed from new. I’ve used it once when I needed to be towed after running out of fuel not too far from home but far enough to need to be rescued !

cheers Charles. yeah, not so good for me. I went out and bought a new rod again. Second one broken on a shark in less than 5 weeks! I guess losing the braid is cheaper than losing a rod, so next time I will be more careful. There is a truckload of sharks around here this summer.
