Always had big respect for DL because of the way the band handled Rick’s tragic accident. They shut down operations and came back after things were set up where he could play. And they didn’t bring in another drummer and have Rick on the side playing along as an auxiliary or bongo player. They stayed with him as their drummer. Much respect.
Interestingly, they had a backup drummer at first just in case Rick couldn't get through the shows. After the first few gigs he told the band Rick was going to be just fine and that he wasn't needed 👍
@@jacobkramer42 Yeah..WE DON'T LIKE ASSHOLES!!!
Bro, bongos require two hands. A little respect please
No doubt they had his back from jump street. Much respect for them staying together & facing the adversity as one.
Well respected
I’m 50 and remember when his accident happened. Kudos to his band mates for sticking with him, especially at their young ages. A true artist. A resilient and determined human. What an inspiration through his personal trials and tribulations.
Right, most bands would have axed him because fame and getting a job done is more important. If it had been Guns n Rosed Axl would have had him out in a heartbeat lol, glad they kept him and it’s an interesting piece of rock lore to have a one armed drummer
Me, too. Any other band would’ve replaced him in no time. Instead, these guys waited, helped him build a new kit and learn to use it… one of the most inspirational stories of brotherhood ever. I was a Def Leppard fan before the accident and even more so afterward. I was fortunate to see them twice back in the Hysteria days ( before they lost Steve Clarke) and twice since. Such GREAT musicians and inspirational guys.
I remember too and imbed always been such an inspiration. My brother attended his drum clinics. Amazing guy.
@@codacreator6162 Not these guys, a neighbor that was a friend and mechanical engineer that designed and
Fabrication work put him back in the drumming business. His band mates
We're there supporting the work. Let us hope.
@@codacreator6162 I saw them on Hysteria as well on my 18th birthday (Tesla opened for them). Their opening # was 'Stagefright', an up-tempo song w/ some rather complicated drum fills & Rick didn't miss a beat. I couldn't help but yell out at that moment "YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH"!!!!!!!
Always admired DEF LEPPARD for never even considering replacing Rick Allen...rock on !!
The giving back to the American wounded warrior project is so amazing. Bless him more abundantly.
he and his wife actually have their own foundation, Raven Drum, and they support Veterans through it! They did partner on a program at one time with WWP.
Gotta give the band band enormous credit 4 standing by him as he recovered.
@Frank Lopez it was NEVER a question.
He was like a brother to the rest of the band.
Gosh, how sad that he felt he had to apologise for welling up and crying. Rick is still healing, but he's got a huge heart. Thanks for posting this.
To Rick Allen: Hello my name is Judy Oger, I To am 58 years old. When I was in high school Def Leppard was "IT" with Foreigner, 38 Special and a few others that followed. I played drums in elementary school and through high school, it was my therapy for stuff happening at home that I had no control over, so I get the meditative reference from your perspective. I wanted to tell you thank you for toughing it out and pursuing drums even though I am sure you suffered so much pain. Your music did a great deal for me, and I am sure many other aspiring musicians. I hope that you continue on your healing journey and continue with the painting, I am into sculpting now, not on your talented level, but it is a creative avenue that helps feed my soul. Thank you for sharing a part of your story of injury and recovery, it helps others like me realize that we all have a path, that is solely ours to walk, in pain, in sorrow and hopefully eventually in victory. God be with you on your continued journey.
As a former drummer, to see what Rick experienced, lived thru, and PERSEVERED, to RELEARN how to play....is the most amazing thing to me.
Keeping rick in the band was the very best thing ever.
He may have lost his arm but he gained so much during his journey in his recovery. I'm loving the Prince portrait. He's done so well in his music and his art. Keep going forward!
I never get tired of hearing stories about Def Leppard
I was born in 1980 and I still remember hearing about this accident even though I was 4 years old. Hysteria was the first ever cassette tape I ever owned and I have always been so proud of Rick. Thank you so much Rick for staying strong and keeping the faith and making all of us die hard Def Leppard fans proud!
You're just like me, i was born in 1960 and still remember when the Beatles came to America in 1964, but apart of that, Rick Allen is a trooper and a fighter never to let anything to be an obsticle for him as he looked positive as his bandmates stood behind for a complete recovery,, this interview really touches and we can learn from Rick that's there's always hope.
Would you all stop.playing pour some sugar its like their worst song, worst album. Pyromania album i played that record to death. Bringing on the Heartbreak, Foolin. Photograph Etc. It has to be frustrating to them that only one album or song gets played.
@@birdsong985 Boo Hoo!!!
Such a humble person, a genuine inspiration. All the best to Rick, a phenomenal artist.
Humble because he was the least talented in the band.
@@journeyquest1 Of course he's talented, he's actually playing the drums with one arm, that takes skill and determination.
@@journeyquest1 why on earth would you say something as low as that, get out of here. Shame on you
I grew up with def Leppard music, and remember when he had the accident.
Was a huge inspiration to me, to not give up, not give in. And I am sure his story affected millions of other people in one way or another in their life.
And his fellow band mates stuck by him through the entire process of him adapting to this physical problem he had to work around, which says a lot about them as well.
Great true life story of overcoming incredible hardships and humanity.
Rick is a resilient and courageous person. He is an inspiration to all.
@@iloveschicken6527 You need a checkup from the neck up.
There is always going to be someone that dislikes a true story, true tragedy, have a heart for once! Very emotional Rick Allen, the end almost made me cry!
It's wonderful that his band stuck with him after the accident. GOD BLESS.
I must say, Rick aged well. He’s better looking now than ever.
Username 😂
Great name.
I came here to say the same. He looks great!
Also, yes, your username is gold!
Love this story. He’s incredibly talented. What a fulfilling life he’s had.❤️

Wow, that’s amazing, and his bandmates for not abandoning him, was excellent too. God Bless Rick
Diehard Def Leppard fan from the beginning, but an even bigger Rick Allen fan & supporter. He's inspiring and has given so much throughout the years to different organizations. Love him, his heart, and who he is.
I have been a fan of Def Leppard since before the accident. Inspiration just exudes out of each member! We love you Rick and Lauren!
Fun fact, after Rick had the accident the rest of the band did everything they could to keep his spirits up. Joe bought pac-man and miss pac-man arcade machines so when the band was taking a break from recording, Rick could have fun beating everyone at them since the cabinets used 1 joystick and no buttons to play.
I was fascinated that they engineered his specially designed electronic drum kit, in 1985.
Long live "The Thunder God." 🥁
I met once him when I was working in a manhole in front of his house. He seemed to be a really nice guy. I had seen him before at 3 of his concerts, so I was a big fan and pretty excited to see him. It’s good to see he’s still doing well.
Have loved this band for decades and recall hearing the news of his tragic accident in the 80’s. What an absolute talent and inspiration he is. And so very humble too. I am grateful he lived not only to tell the tale but also to inspire so many. He’ is one of the GREATS! A true legend!
I remember when it happened like it was just yesterday! Went to see Def Leppard after, and they were still great! So proud of what he has accomplished in his life!
Remarkable Fortitude and Strength, yet so humble, and caring man. Bless You
So he not only loses an arm and continues to play drums but also as healing takes up painting, another art form reliant on hands/arms. What a badass
Rick Allen is amazing and has positively inspired so many of us who struggle everyday physically and mentally. He’s our hero.
Love him.
Love Def Leppard.
❤️❤️❤️
God Bless Rick, he's a true artist in so many ways...much respect!! Never give up🙏
I bought pyromania when it FIRST came out. I'm 56 now. But I remember way back when he had the accident. I was always awestruck by his resilience. He just came back. That is it. It was so amazing to me. I was completely in awe, and I NEVER forgot how he made me feel. I'm glad to see he's still flourishing. ❤

Definitely an inspiration. The work you do for our wounded veterans also brings comfort to those of us that were not visibly wounded. May your blessings continue. Peace. Also, the artwork is excellent.
Wow. I’m so moved. Thanks for this story. My favorite Grandfather lost an entire arm in a terrible accident as a child. His handicap never phased me. He kept living his life doing his best, having an impact. Peace! ❤️🩹🙏🏻🥁🎨🥇
I met him at a show for his art a few years ago and he's so incredibly kind. One of the nicest people I've ever met.
The band stood by Rick and everything worked out. Says a lot.. ❤️
Rick Allen is a hero and an inspiration. Keep rockin' man!!
Rick you are such a gift to all rock fans everywhere!!! I love you compassion and determination to be the best, which undoubtedly you ARE!!!

Wow, Rick Allen is amazing and looks really healthy and I hope happy. I love his art, wish I could afford it! Staying in the band probably had everything to do with helping him heal. Major respect to all the band.
Look at this man not just very good looking but a tremendously talented painting artist, keep up the great work and rock on!!🥰🥰
Honor and immense respect for Rick! Wow, I can barely deal with my life when things are good! Stong is not even close to a word to describe him.
Kudos to him, the band for their loyalty AND the engineers who enabled him to continue.
Rick is the man, great drummer, great person. Full respect to him and to DL for standing by him all the way. Bought Hysteria when it first came out, Still one of my all time favourites
Wow, did not know any of this about him. Good man. Found the right folks to help him and his band mates, dang. Folks, that is how it is supposed to work...why is my screen all blurry now?
He made me cry. He's amazing.
I knew this interview would be emotional, but I didn't know I'd be crying so hard 😭Beautiful story and a beautiful man. ❤
I really respected the band for sticking with him and finding a way to keep going. Awesome.

Rick is the rock and roll gift that just keeps giving. Loved him 1984 and love him today.
The guy is sheer genius to be able to drum that way and so well!
I see his drum kit and I think how amazing if he had that set up with both arms! Wow!
Amazing drummer. Amazing person!
I met Rick Allen a couple of years ago. What really impressed me about him was that he was so nice and that he wanted to talk to me about my life. Every time he was in my store he stopped by to hi to me and I can say I can call him a friend
THAT IS SO AWESOME!
Love Def Leppard! Love Rick Allen. Not only am I impressed by the way he triumphed following his accident, but also now that I hear how he helps wounded veterans
Rick Allen is a LEGEND! Thank you so much for featuring him.
Rick you are Amazing, and Rock must go on . Kudos to you for helping wounded vets too 🇬🇧🇺🇸
He is such a huge inspiration!
Still a cutie and my favorite. Great to know you're still doing awesomely, Rick! ✌🤟🤘... ❤
I remember exactly where I was and who I was with when I heard about his accident. Amazing personal transformation 👏 He is still loved and admired by millions of fans today. Best of luck overcoming his PTSD in the future.
I remember his accident and I am so very proud of him I just love him
Beautiful man! His band stuck with him through the worst and now they are all legendary.
Always loved his resilience. It’s so nice to see someone else who can take their suffering and create magic. Much love & respect!!
I remember that sad event...Def Leppard rocks...saw them live in 1983 in Michigan and was hands down the best concert I ever saw...I got an authentic british flag shirt...This story is very inspiring!💜
Dear Mr. Allen....thank you for everything you have done since your accident....my daughter lost an arm (just below the elbow) in a farm accident in 1999....she is the strongest, most caring, warm, talented, loving young woman you'll ever meet. She is also very artistic and her sketches are beautiful...when the movie Hysteria came out, we finished chores early that night just so we could all sit on the couch and watch it....what an inspiration!!! Thanks to all members of the band for taking the all for one and one for all attitude...Def
Leppard has been a favorite since I was a teenager....God bless you and your wife for all you do....you help more people than you know!💕💕
OMG I remember this, and later seeing a documentary about how he was coping. Great to see how he’s doing now, what a guy. Love and hugs🤗🏴
You got to love ingenuity thru adversity - awesome interview and Rick A. Is an awesome musician and humanitarian
I remember the moment my BFF and I heard... We were devastated. It was so heart breaking, but fortunately he came through triumphantly!!
And so did the band!!🎸
Up there with John Bonham, Rick Allen is magic as a drummer. Love him!!!
Such a good piece! Rick is an inspiring soul! So gifted in many ways!
As a veteran with ptsd myself, I say this: you are more of an inspiration to us than you will ever know. Thank you for what you do with the Wounded Warrior Project. You’re a Godsend to us all!
I’ve been a huge DL fan forever! I’ve seen them live many times, the shows are amazing! The band has endured all these years, Ricks injury could have easily split them, but it unified them and his talents and gifts contribute so much to their popularity. The audience is aware of the unique drum setup and it’s really incredible to watch him play! A gifted musician and a generous heart - God bless!
he is awesome on the drums and his paintings are amazing
I saw DL in Bristol in Fall 2003 and was blown away by this man's ability and strength. But how he is giving back is and even bigger accomplishment and truly amazing!

Ricks an inspiration to all that have had to sacrifice and survive.
Simply amazing 🤩 a true rock star 💫 His positive attitude is astounding. His wife is a perfect pairing for him and they are doing good. You can see the genuine person he is. Caring and unselfish.
Once in a Blue Moon, and I mean it’s literally THAT rare, ABC produces something of value.
This is one of those way too rare moments.
Love Def Leppard!!!!! Way to go Rick finding a new hobby
Your artwork is absolutely beautiful.
A man of many talents. Congratulations on donating your money to a great cause. You rock 🎸
When I was younger I loved Def Leppard and Hysteria. I couldn’t believe he lost his arm and cam back I believe better than he was before beating the hell of his drums. What an inspirational man and great person all around. His paintings are so beautiful!
He's Amazing for Pushing on and doing Great!! 👍🇺🇸💜
❤👍 god bless people like Rick to show the world that they still got it
To me DL seems to be more than a band but a family. Mad props to them for the way they stuck together & kept on rockin!! And MUCH RESPECT TO RICK ALLEN FOR HOW HE REFUSED TO LET LOSING HIS ARM CONTROL HIM BUT HOW HE CONTROLLED IT!!!!
NOW YOU KNOW WHY I LOVE RICK ALLEN & DEF LEPARD!!!!!!!!
I saw Def Leppard in 1982 before Rick's accident. In the days of General Admission Concerts. I was almost trampled in the rush of the crowd, and was pulled out and brought backstage. All the members of the Band were concerned about me, and stayed and talked to me for a while. Guess who stayed with me the longest? Rick Allen 😊. He was so kind and very genuine. I will never forget that night . It makes my heart so happy that he has had such a wonderful life💓

Saw Def Leppard in Milan just before Covid and he gave a drum solo I will never forget. The audience gave a huge ovation. Amazing.
🙏I remember the day it happened, saw them live in 1988 and what an amazing story🙏
Wow what a blessing to see them back then!!
One of my all time favorite bands
Rick is and will always be one of the greatest inspirations in the music industry. I was so proud of his band members to stand by him. He never missed a beat. What a great story. Thanks for posting ABC News. Really enjoyed it.
I’ve seen them in concert 2 times and they’ve never disappointed me they’re just as amazing as ever love them !!!
My love for Rick Allen is decades on now. It has not been misplaced.
Somebody give that guy a… hug! What a cool dude.
I remember his accident and what an amazing journey he has traveled in his life. He is an amazing drummer. What a heartfelt story about him. He never gave up and had so much support from his bandmates/friends. This should be a lesson to all of us, never give up, always have faith, believe. I am so happy to see that he is helping the Wounded Warrior Project, what a special man. What an amazing band, they really do deserve to be in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. I have seen them many times in concert, and they always put on an amazing concert. I got tears in my eyes just watching this interview.
Nice job Rick. Your support of Wounded Warriors is terrific! Thank you for being a part of it.
He sure is an inspiration. Wonderful what he been able to do 🙏🏻
Rick is an incredible human being and musician. The question about going back to the accident is one I thought about for the last 47 years… I too had a Trumatic life-changing accident. Like Rick, I grew in ways I may never have had it not been for what I had to face. We all walk a path… We may not see the significance in the pain and suffering that we endure. Some of the most whole-hearted, grounded human beings I’ve ever known have suffered greatly. Great interview thanks!🙏🏻
Such an amazing story for an extraordinarily talented man and beautiful families.
Rick Allen is great, great player, his band mates and fans adore him!
