Wow Josh, I started hanging drywall right out of the army back in the late 70's early 80's and yes we had inflation near 21%. I hung until I was good enough to start a small company, did that for nearly 35 years. We were getting 2-3 dollars a sheet up to 2000, and I would hang 30-40 sheets a day by myself. The last five years I hung with my own panel lift and wouldn't call it a day until 30+ sheets were up, and I don't know if things have changed but we had sheets ranging from 8-16 foot in length. I'm heading towards my 70's now and still building on my own house. Your videos are so very helpful thank you for your time. I hung a young couples living room the other day and really felt good to be able to help them out. Blessings from a old veteran
Been learning a ton from so many different channels, a little over 2.5 years into building my own house starting from untouched land with no city water and no city sewer.. Your channel is probably the most helpful as you break everything down to the nitty gritty details where lots of other guys show you stuff they are doing from 20 feet away and with half their body parts blocking the view . Drywaller here. Where I’m from we charge by the foot. If you’re charging by the sheet do you charge the same for 8 footers as you do 16 footers? Just add up your total footage. Anything over 8 ft. Ceilings is extra.
What would you normally charge by foot?
I love everything you explained. It's funny in our area it's figured by the square foot for hanging and finishing. In our area you can also find guys who do just sanding, not anyone's favorite, but it allows finishers to go to the next job. Of course some things like smooth ceilings or specialty finishes can change the price. The sunburst designs around lights are not for everyone but can add an interesting feature. When we would do plaster crown work, either in precast sections (6') or make our own design and form it by hand ( One of my favorite) the price can go up.

Hey David! Charging by the square footage wound be very similar to charging by the square foot. Smooth ceilings is the common finish in my area. I can definitely see how the price could go up a lot if you get special alternative finishes. My dad used to do the Sunburst design around the lights when we build houses when I was younger. Here in New Jersey it's about $50 a 4x8 sheet paint ready, you buy the rock.
It's going to take the average Joe far more than 6 weeks to hang and finish 350 sheets, if they even get it done.

Like I said in the video it’s only $25 a sheet for a 4 x 12 sheet here. Like I have said several times you cannot be a man at his own trade. If I was finishing this drywall, I would still be there with a mess and sanding it all off just to make it look right. It’s crazy how much of a price difference it is from region to region. I did the drywall for one large room that we put on top of a garage addition job. My arms were so sore holding up the sheets while we screwed the drywall to the walls and ceiling. The screws kept flipping sideways. It was very hard. Also doing the tape and mud. Also sanding it flat. It is a lot of hard dirty work. Wear a safety mask to protect your lungs from silicosis. - TAV ♥️🇺🇸🌎👍

Hi Josh - this video gave a good idea of what to expect as I’m looking at having a living room and several other rooms repaired. Several screws loose in walls and ceiling popping through. I’m in a rural area near a lake so the moisture has contributed to this. Wondering what you might provide as a ballpark figure per hour?? to mud and repair these rooms. The drywall is basically still in good shape, not warped. Thanks so much for any assistance you might provide.

Thanks. Yeh, you would be crazy to do your own drywall. Takes a crew, and It is a LOT of work. Never mind the skill involved.
I farm out drywall and big concrete slabs, although I can do almost everything else.
That’s exactly how I feel about it too. At work alone it’s nearly impossible to hang drywall. Finishing would be possible but it take too much time to learn to do. Thanks a lot for watching Tom!

In Sf Bay Area cost for a union shop to install and finish is around $3.50 a square foot

The average around here is figured by sheet count but then broken down into the square foot and the going rate is around $1/sq. ft. hung and finished. Your example would have been just a smidge over $13K. Love your videos man!
That would only be 3k. He is charging 4.5 a sqft
@@JuancoPRoFlow This is how the math works out - 4'x12'=48 sq.ft, 4.5'x12'=54 sq.ft. He used a total of 98 sheets of regular 4'x12', used 125 sheets of 54"x12', used 24 sheets of moisture resistant 4'x12', and finally 9 sheets of 5/8" thick 4'x12'. 98X48=4704 + 125X54=6750 + 24X48=1152 + 9X48=432. This totals 13,038. And like I said 6 months ago we were running around a buck a foot and we always run off sheet count and never the floor square footage or any other multiplier, there are too many variables.

I can assure you that is how much it cost in my area when I had this done. I am not building in a really populated area so labor is cheaper. Hope that helps!
to do the exact same job size that he quoted, would be about $37,000 in just labor in the area I'm working.
In my area it's 40.00 bux a sheet to hang and tape it.ready for primer plus paint.
That labor cost definitely seems low

Still fairly new to the drywall business...did you add some extra sheets to your board counts or is it safe to just buy the exact # of boards you will need?

That's dirt cheap labor... our area..the total cost material and labor would be about $24,000 ..and we are in rural Pennsylvania...

Just got quoted $19200 (including supplies) to hang and finish drywall in a 1600 sq ft house. 8 foot ceilings throughout, no garage. Crazy. Got another quote for $23400 for the same work. Needless to say, I didn’t call either guy back. This is in Phoenix
roughly 12500 sq. ft of board , In Vancouver boarders and tapers get roughly $.35 to $.40 sq. ft. , but tapers also get around a $1.25 per foot for bead, so out here it would be around 11k CAD for labour
around here they do a square foot. Most do one price to hang one to finish.

retired drywall hanger/finisher. I had never seen 54 inch wide drywall around here when I was still working. but honestly even if they had it. I'd probably not use it. I'd much rather have a full sheet at top, full sheet on bottom and a rip in the center. I can float out the double joint just as fast and not strain my back bending over pushing the tools. But everyone has their preferred way of doing things.
I am in Ontario, Canada, for my 1875SF home, 9ft ceilings, garage drywalled, unfinished basement. I so far have received two quotes, $24,500 & 27,500 dollars. The date is April 20th, 2022, the inflation is causing labor costs to sky rocket. As note, I am in a rural country side, not city.

In Ontario as well and my contractor just finished my house. About 2100sqft house, 500sqft garage and it cost me 19k for labour only. That includes priming though. Materials cost me about 8k.
Edit: So labour was $1.90 a sq ft and I had about 10,000 sq ft of board.
I am a GC in Florida Sanibel/Captiva to be exact and drywall guys are charging 250-400 a sheet! We just had the storm but still...
send them my way, we are charging $95-105 per 4x8 plus material's in that area.. Just look for the Silver Tacoma with the white cap, that has the huge DRYWALL logo on the side.. We had done jobs on Sanibel, Fort Myers, North Port.. and next week doing two in Naples... Put we are the evil "out of state" workers that everyone warned you about.. but we are way cheaper then the rest

Just to think that $6400 labor cost could pay for some really nice additions to your house if you diy. Could cover most kitchen appliances or upgraded quartz countertops, really nice flooring, etc. definitely inspiring to DIY if your up for the task.
But can a DYI do it like the pros?? probrlably not

I been doing drywall since 1997. I charge $1 square foot just to tape and finish. This is a little older vid and different area. Maybe this is the reason for the big difference of price.
25 dollars per sheet to hang it and finished is way to cheap it doesn’t matter where you live, normally the finisher gets more than the guys who do the hanging so let’s say that the hanger is making 12 dollars per sheet, if you are paying insurance and everything you can make a profit out of those 12 dollars per sheet , how you are going to pay more for material than laborer? How is that possible, i am a drywall guy so i know what it takes

It took to Drywall Hanger‘s two days to hang the whole house. It took a finisher working by himself about a week. The finish on the ceilings was smooth along with the walls. Hope that helps Kevin!

@@KevinDiaz-kz9lt auto taping tools are typical around here for drywall finishers for new residential construction especially in subdivisions, 1 guy can tape a whole house in a day or 2, and finish in about a week.

I live in florida and I charge 22$ a board for hanging finishing and texture.

Where I'm at it's 1.50 to 3.50 per square foot. I'm a finisher and my problem is gets the square footage right. Like one room, lots say say 15x15. How would you add the ceiling measurements to the 15x15. 4 walls and ceiling. I get the walls right when pricing . I just have a really difficult time adding the ceiling the the full measurement. Is 15x15 the whole room plus ceiling or is it just the walls? Then add ceiling in cause it could be a flat ceiling or a peak ceiling. If peak, to me it looks bigger than 15x15. Probably something simple. I'm just learning. I can finish, I can't price.
learn trigonometry, you'll learn how to calc sq. footage of a peaked ceiling. If it's flat, it's safe to use the sq. footage of the floor plan of each floor. I usually just walk around counting how many sheets it'll take each room and ceiling just by looking at it. If the wall is 7 feet long 8 feet high then 2 sheets at 4x8 size. who cares about the waste as most likely waste is 10% of material anyway.
You don't charge the actual square footage. You charge the amount of square footage for the drywall used. All the scrap drywall is included in the price you charge as well as the hanger. A 15x15 ceiling would take 8 eight foot sheets. You would charge for 256 square ft for the ceiling. You need 16 eight foot sheets to do the walls so that comes to 512 square feet. Total footage for that room is 768 square feet. The average cost to finish in my area is about 40 cents per square foot. 768×.40=$307.20

We are building a 2,730/sf home in the Baton Rouge (area) Louisiana and had 4 drywall quotes between $75 and $100 for 4x8 sheets not including materials.
I'm guessing the big builders aren't paying that price.
All depends on the area, I'm doing drywall in Florida, and getting $95-115 per 4x8 sheet plus materials. Some contractors are charging a lot more than us, I have seen quotes for over $300 a sheet hung and finished. Not sure who is doing it for $32-48 a sheet, but if they are any good, I'll hire them tomorrow...

Yeah, at the Golden rate of $100 per sheet you'd only be at $2,400 ... Like $75 per sheet includes material is more like it for professional results.Thats 12 foot sheets, 48 square feet.
