I really love Megamind's arc. He was never truly a villain. He just accepted the role everyone labeled him as. And while he did enjoy his best friend Minion, the gadgets, the banter with Metroman, and the theatrics of it all, he never truly wanted world domination. So he tried to create a new hero, who turned out to be an actual villain. But with the the help of those he cares about, he was able to defeat Titan and become the hero he was destined to be. It's a beautiful story, and an excellent subversion of stereotypical superhero genre tropes at the time.

The fact that he still remembers exactly what happened to his home planet and parents - vividly, in fact - makes the whole thing even more heartbreaking. This means that on top of all that we see in the movie, he's pretty much carrying a grief that no one in their right mind was ever meant to carry, to the point where he just makes jokes about it because it's easier. ("I was eight days old and still living with my parents. How sad is that?")

In the 2000 version, he was bullied for looking different and in the 2018 version, he was simply neglected. No backstory for the original though... Star Wars' talent for destroying young men began with Ani Skywalker, forbidden "attachments", and continued with Ben Solo. Some of us have had enough. Snape's devotion to avenging Lily meant he could never allow himself to risk letting LV read that in his mind. Loki was lied to, manipulated, then discovered in the series that his whole life was a lie contrived for the Sacred Timeline, and chooses to become a hero. Tom conveys this beautifully. If you know Joachim Phoenix's background his Joker's pain will especially break your heart. And Disney ditched cartoon villain Maleficient for a traumatized, embittered young woman who learns not to punish the innocent for the crimes of the guilty and becomes a regal heroine you just don't mess with. Angelina played her to perfection.

Loki.... 100% agree! 😍😊 Ever since the MCU introduced him, I always knew there was a good person inside of him. Seeing him talk to Thor in the Elevator (Thor Ragnarok) & asked his brother he should stay at Asgard for awhile, Thor refused becuz he knew Loki would rather run away than stay put. That scene right there broke my heart. 😢😢 Even in the series Loki, Loki stated he doesn't like to be evil just crushed me. He's trying to be a good person, but everyone sees him as The God of Mischief. Seeing Loki in the show doing his best to stop Sylvie gives more hope to me that not all villains are bad, most of them r misunderstood. Now that season 2 of Loki is coming this year, i can't wait to see how he'll stop Kang & Sylvie. He's not a villain, he's an anti-hero. 💚💚

And a giant hint that he is good was shown in the spirit world episode in season 1. He was looking for Iroh and on the trail, he saw Appa in the sky. He could have went after Appa then and there, but he went to save his uncle instead. Evil to the core never saves love.

    • @dudotolivier6363
      @dudotolivier6363 Год назад +1

@@sarahhenry1845 "A giant hint".... pfff, that gentle to said that. Like Waylon Smither in the Simpson where all the stuff of him being gay presented as "evidences" never where actually evidences. They never hide that onscreen, and did not directly said that oncreen during a long time so that was obvious for everyone. Why confirming something if everyone already know and is fully aware of that ?.
The same thing completely occur for Zuko. Directly at the very first episode, it's obvious and put at the start which direction every characters will undergo, and for Zuko, his changement of side is completely guess easily by everyone from very long and far since the very beginning of the show. So this side change from the bad camp to the one of the protagonnists isn't a surprise by any means.
If he chase in the first time to catch the group and Aang, it's because his forced to do that.
I don't want to do dirty stuff, but is forced to day because he's not in a good situation (at the base) and if he do nothing and don't made what his own kind (his nation, and of course, by that, his own father) want him to do, he will even get worse and hurt even worse.
So, Zuko isn't a villain and antagonnist by any means (which make his entry in this video competely irrelevant).
Because you can be someone in the Evil/bad camp without actually be evil yourself, even be completely like the good guys in the Good camp, just you're forced by the true pure evil guys to do dirty stuff because they enslaved you in a way or another.
Also, Zuko as a whole in general is very, very a too overestimated character and adore/love him thus he have any real merits of any kind.
Zuko isn't bad as a character, by any means.
But truth be told : he's just an OK character. Nothing more.
I absolutely don't understand all these praises we made on him, and why we always said that his arc is good and one of the best things of the show.
Zuko is just an Anti-heroe all along from episode 1 to final, never a villain but never a heroe either.

    • @dudotolivier6363
      @dudotolivier6363 Год назад +1

I would really know why ?
Because, ironically, of all of the others protagonnist, as iconic and charismatic they are, it's him, the less well made of all.
      At least for me.
Zuko is, at my opinion, too overestimated, and everyone praise and adore his character only because he change of camp, from the bad to good side.
Only because he go into the Good guys side at the middle of the ATLA show.
And alsmot everything on which all these praises and adoration, and that we said (too) often his arc is one of the best of the show, completely rest on that. Just because he change from the bad side to the good side (along with some views, but giibng he's already a good guy at the very begiining who only do dirty stuff just and only because he completely forced to do them with any others possible ways, there any real reals changes in this perspective).
But that doesn't made a specific character in question, in a story, such a high figure.
Such things only constitute a part of him and what made it great.
And sadly, there numerous negatives things we can say on Zuko that make him only a ok character if we do a true objective honest review of him !
The fact he go from the bad camp to the good camp, is and remain a single, not very high element or argument to give him all these praises he receive.
In addition to be a thing/element very common, generic and not new, used a lot of time way before, in medias as a whole.
So, something very conservative (not bad or boring, but not extraordinary either).
Firstly, Zuko is never an antagonist, a bad guy. It's always clearly show that if he do bad things, it's only because he forced or think to be forced to do it.
His changement of side is completely guess easily by everyone from very long and far since the very beginning of the show. So this side change from the bad camp to the one of the protagonnists isn't a surprise by any means.
We just wait, and wait long because it's very late that Zuko finally become intelligent to realise that he's only force to do and act as his father want to be, and that it's truly possible that his father and nation can be defeated, allowing things he want him to come and to be as he truly want to be.
(Because before, he truly believe that his father and nation were unstoppable and that there way any other way to live as the setting impose by his own nation ordered).
But still that Zuko pass really a very long and lot of time before be convince there another, despite he see numerous time the protagonnists' actions showing him that there always another way for everything, and to realize that he don't want to be like setting of his nation impose him to be.
Thus he know his own person very well, how he is him, since the very beginning.
So that sound stupid at the end.
Zuko isn't clever and (will) do everytime the bad decisions to take.
Zuko, in front of almost everything, a danger, an specific event, or everything else, in the show, take always the bad(est) decision possible.
And when he indeed do a somewhat good/positive decision in surface appearance, it's always following what someone had said and ordered to him (so not something he decide by himself).
And even here, the repercussions are also bad.
(for example, if he go to and fight Azula at the end, it's only because his uncle Iroh said it to him to do so, that he must because Iroh said she was not good. And seeing how Iroh, thus a very good character more than ok for once consider her own niece despite being open-minded is pretty bad and something we can complain on him. Even more since it's so because of him if Zuko end up doing bad things that truly hurt Azula, at the end of th show and even after in the comics).
Zuko is even an big ashole in many ways and someone who have very contradicted/conflicting mentalities.
And unvolontary without he take conscience of it on top of that (that an understatement) !
For example, it's shown that he show several time to truly care about Azula, his sister, and yet, at the end, instead of speaking to her to understand and help her when she almost crowned as the new firelord, he fight simply and purely her because his uncle Hiiro said to him to do this. (he choose the lazy way)
And even use at his own advantage, on purpose and fully aware of that, the mentally fragile state of his sister to fight and to try to win upon her !
I'm sorry, that is a not clever, stupid, dick and very hating move from him.
Also, he lost in a spectaculary way the Last Agni Kai against Azula since he's knocked out after Zuko try a trick against her to fight by using her own lightnings but fail because Azula again is more clever than him (Zuko is really loyal to him until the very end ! My felicitations).
So, btw, having win the last agni kai, Azula is the true legitimate firelord.
      (Which made Zuko an usurpator).
Also, another exemple, again toward his sister, when Zuko try to join the Gaang after the failed Fire Nation's invasion, but failed at first because the others always don't like him for all he does before, he said that he could have put most of it (that the others didn't know that was him, like the fire assassin) on Azula and to be things she does.
And would have do it if the idea came to him earlier.
I'm sorry, but that also isn't ok from him.
So, when I heard Azula, Ozai but especially Mai, saying several times that Zuko is an idiot (which indeed he is a lot like what I mentionned show it greatly), I have the impression/feeling that the show itself seem to completely acknowledge this fact !
(But that could be just me in this latter point).
The second show, LOK, don't made great care of Zuko. Overall, in the sequel show, he's just here to be here, is not usefull, just an old man that can't do anything much and yet, again, made the bad choice.
He litterally goes away just before the Red Lotus antagonist capture and badly severely treat the Avatar, which will give all the entire repercussions who will lead to all season 4 problems about her (in all the definitions of this term), to join his nation to protect his own daughter, Izumi, because he think she's in danger thus not.
If he was stayed with the group to fight the Red Lotus, along with his dragons, the events would have been very different and even likely the entire oppossite (the writting of the plot wasn't here this day in the producers office as I can see, since that a great plot device excuse to lead the things we see happen, and who aren't themselves good either).
Everybody will said to me that the fact his daughter is potentially in danger is a fair enough element to get him away. But giving he was unable with his dragons to prevent the escape of the fourth, last member of the group (and yet, they weren't only two), I don't think he would have being very usefull to protect her daughter Izumi either...
So yes, I absolutely don't understand all these praises we made on him, and that almost everyone continue to treat Azula in a bad way.
She really need respect, to be gentle and nice toward her,and to only put her in a good light.
Azula is a very good and way more x 1000 lovable, truly badass, amazing and respectfull character than Zuko will ever be !
She's not and never was an antagonist/villain, and was already like Zuko in the same situation. Forced to do bad things and to be like his father and nation wanted to be and anything else otherwise she would be hit in bad ways she don't way to end, thus she herself too never want to do such bad things and to be bad too.
Zuko is just an Anti-heroe all along from episode 1 to final, never a villain but never a heroe either.
And Azula is just a sad tragic character who don't deserved any of the things she received and end up just be a punching-ball ball even way after the show conclusion, for sadic pleasure of people, thus it's sad and unfunny and not many people these days take pleasure and laught on that.
Just see painfully with sadness the things again and again, forever....
(as far I'm aware, she will get this year 2023 a complete personnal comic specially turning around her, and in which she will redeem herself etc... but that too late, and in addition, will not be a "big" comic like the mai ones we received prior, but a small one. Which shwo how the care and management about the franchise have undergo since many years. Because this kind of thing with Azula should have come way more earlier).
OF COURSE ! Everything here was my pure and personal opinion on the subject. Any problems if you, yourself, you have like him, even a lot !
But, as for my at least, whe I see Zuko everytime, I cannot revent myself to feel that something in him, or his character, does be pretty off or wrong to me.

Here’s a perfect example of a villain that’s not evil, but just broken, and that’s Spinel from Steven Universe: The Movie.
Spinel was the best friend and playmate of Pink Diamond. However, after Pink was just assigned to rule her own planet for gem colonization, Earth, she had Spinel play a “game” by standing perfectly still in the garden waiting for her. Spinel waited for thousands of years, but little did she know, Pink Diamond was never coming back. Then when Spinel discovered that Pink actually abandoned her, and has now become her own son, Steven Universe, Spinel felt so heartbroken, that she dashes toward Earth attempting to demolish the planet believing Pink Diamond cared more about that planet then their past friendship. Luckily, Steven Universe, who learned that Happily Ever After is just an illusion, convinces Spinel that they can learn to accept change and growth. So Spinel decided it’s best to move on and accept the nurture from the rest of the Diamonds.

How is it that Catra from She-Ra & the Princesses of Power (who frankly should’ve been #1) wasn’t even MENTIONED on this list?!
To me, she remains the only antagonist character where you understand EVERY one of her motives that lead to every bad action she takes & instead of hating her for it, you just feel so bad for her that you want to wrap your arms around her in the BIGGEST hug! 😭 because in truth, she’s felt more pain than most people will feel in their lifetime ❤️‍🩹
And by the endgame of her arc she ends up doing the bravest thing possible that even She-Ra herself doesn’t come CLOSE to doing.

Lotso from Toy Story 3 may have been a sociopathic and merciless teddy bear, he got abandoned and replaced which set him off being angry at toys and kids alike. He put Andy’s toys through dangerous obstacles by being wrecked by toddlers in the Caterpillar Room just for his enjoyment. He also left the toys for dead in the incinerator during his last chance to redeem himself.
Another example: Kron from Disney’s Dinosaur. I wouldn’t view him as evil, but he acts like an angry jerk who won’t listen to reason and torments the weaker members of the herd and has a conflict with Aladar. The reason he does that is because he’s scared for his strongest members, his sister Neera, his mantle and himself. He’s just overburdened and is devastated with what’s happening. For that matter, his behavior is like that of real life herd animals. He also seems to make up his mind on certain things.

I agree. Why a lot of people think he was that big villain is mostly because the original movies came out first. And many didn't like to see Vader as a little kid. But that was a good idea. It's never been Anakin 's fault, more like the emperor and the councel who chose not to believe in his abilities

    • @jeuryrabassa4724
      @jeuryrabassa4724 Год назад +1

@@clarajaysI have been saying that for years and most people for no reason don't understand nor even get that at all.
And that really bothers me a lot from them.
Anakin never asked for all those awful things that happened to him,
All he ever wanted to do is freeing his own mother from slavery and take her with him to somewhere far from Tattoine and save his own wife and the love of his life,Padme from a unexpected death at childbirth.
And the main reason why he ever wanted to become a Jedi,
It's because he always wanted to save, free and protect those who cannot defend themselves and preventing them from dying in vain,
Especially those who he always cares, loves and cherish with his own very good and pure heart and soul and become a recognizable hero that everyone can cheer and admire for all the great heroics he has done.
But unfortunately, both The Jedi Council nor even Palpatine never saw that in him.
The Jedi Council didn't give him the proper Jedi Training nor the proper Jedi Treatment nor even the proper help he truly needed and deserve.
They just constantly keep misjudging him, misunderstand him and kept lying & keeping secrets to him almost all the time.
No matter Qui-Gon and Count Dooku don't seat on The Council.
And they were actually right about The Jedi Council for being Liars, Wrong and Being Foolish Blind and Selfish to some other people like Anakin.
And they called themselves True Jedi,
What a bunch of blind and selfish fools.
      And as for Palpatine,
He just wants him to become his new dark apprentice (A.K.A a slave) so can he do all of dirty work for him, kept lying to him, seduced and manipulated him with his own dark powers and then replace him with another different apprentice that is stronger than him (What a old evil prick and dick).
No wonder why Maul, Dooku and Vader wanted to kill him so badly.
      And I don't blame them,
That old evil man truly deserves to die.
And Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader has always been my personal favorite Star Wars character.
Not only I synthesize with him,
But also relate to him as well.

Snape wasn't really abused by his father, he just grew up poor and lonely, his parents were unhappy and he never really liked staying home but you never really get the sense that he was abused. You don't even get the sense of neglect as Potter gets from his aunt and uncle. They were just generally unhappy due to poverty. His mother is a pure blood that married a muggle, one thing that can be certain is that there was love involved. For one thing, if his father was an abuser, Snape never would have kept his name.

I'm not sure about Killmonger. Now, admittedly I haven't seen Black Panther, but I've seen and read enough to know what his endgame is. It doesn't sound like freedom fighting in as it is revenge. I mean it sounds like he wants to be the one doing the oppressing and will kill scores of people in the process.
Maybe it's just me, but that sounds pretty evil to me.

I feel like Hans should be in this list. He’s the youngest of 13 boys. All of whom tortured him. To top it all off his parents encouraged this bad behavior. All he wanted to do was escape home and find love. He just wanted life away from his horrific family

Hans apparently got misfitted into the villain role when they decided to make Elsa good. They could have had an interesting story with Anna and Elsa switching loves, and they had ready-made villains already out to destroy Elsa. Still don't know what they were thinking.

I'm not really a MEGAmind fan, but admittedly, I did enjoy his 2 fights with Tighten. Pun intended.

Let's not forget about John Kramer AKA Jigsaw from the Saw franchise, who's life started to crumbled when he had his wife Jill lost their new born child and was later diagnosed with terminal cancer and try to take his own life in the process only to survived his failed attempted suicide and became the villain that we're all familiar with.

Snape was never the villain, he was just playing a part as instructed by Dumbledore

Maleficent’s backstory is definitely the best one on this list. Sad, but still definitely deserves number one.

I’ve loved Loki since he first appeared in Thor’s first trilogy film. It’s not that I didn’t follow what his character was doing; it was more that I couldn’t believe what a horrible, hateful upbringing he had been given (under the circumstances) & as the movies cont., it just became more & more clear that Odin was the worst parental figure ever! Just AWFUL! The fact that Loki still had the desire to impress both his father & his big brother after such horrific experiences impressed me greatly & his fairly quick admission on his series that he doesn’t enjoy hurting ppl made him even more admirable. When you consider what many of the “superheroes “ of the Avengers have on their ledgers, it seems somewhat hypocritical to call out Loki on anything he’s done on earth. If nothing else, he was holding onto Thanos’ mind stone the entire time he was there and it took mere minutes to get the human minds total wacked out by that sphere. How is that any dif than Natasha or TWS being mind controlled by evil Russians?!

Can't agree with Homelander, even if it's an "honorable mention".
