    Hey guys so I made a mistake in the video that I’ve realized now I’m that you should take 366 and double it until you get higher values that suits your song. So basically you would keep doubling the quarter note to get suitable times. My apologies went through this a bit to fast but the information is right here for you !

      Someone let me know about a technique you might wanna try out - it may be what your engineer was doing, who knows. Use this formula to get an optimal pre-delay setting...
      60,000 ➗ BPM ➗ 4 ➗ 4 = $$
      I still don't really have a well-developed ear for mixing (😣) so all I can tell you is that when I've used it, it didn't sound awful or anything. Give it a shot though and see if it works for you..

    I remember my music teacher telling me that the ADSR should be set based on the 1/4,1/2 or other host BPM note timings. That became more apparent when setting the decay times of 808s or synths according to the note timings I wanted - if I needed a bar, I just calculated that amount for my BPM and set it to that. Before that I would go 'by ear', and would either fail all together or just take way too much time to get the desired setting.
    Thank you for elucidating the concept of reverb and giving us this guideline! It's really great when you can have formulas/computational guidelines to aid your decisions. I don't think this kills creativity or the artistic flair of mixing/making music, contrary to that, it gives you indications on how things are supposed to be done and why they're done in such a way. This brings structure into our thinking process and then into our music which imho is an indispensable tool.

      agreed, and perhaps, in this kind of situation, it helps to at least lock on to a multiple of that number. If not mathematically inclined, people are still getting the best idea of this timing technique, and then they can go by ear from there. Come to think of it, timing not only reverb and delays, but compressors, filters, anything that can be automated can help not only in mixing and mastering, but in production as well. It's all creativity from there.

    Bro, I had been doing music for years creating. I have NEVER been a fan of reverb or pre-reverb. That's because I never really focused on the "VOCALS" before and hardly ever used it in creating beats. This was GREAT knowledge and I have over 25 years experience making beats for fun. That is so sad to type (admitting my faults in the game), however, it's true. If you want the calculation to give you reverb time in seconds, divide 60 (not 60,000) by the BPM and you will get the timing of a quarter note in seconds. EXAMPLE: with a BPM of 120 (2 beats per second), dividing 60 by 120 gives 0.5 = 1/2 second per beat/quarter note. Setting that figure in the decay window will give you a reverb length of a quarter note.
    Thanks for the video :)

  • @jonsubs9998
    @jonsubs9998 5 лет назад +1

    This is a good video and I'm sure you helped a lot of people. You just got lost on that decimal for a moment. The quarter is 0.366 of a second (366 milliseconds). Most songs fit nicely with a reverb that is a full note which is simply your quarter * 4 = 1.464 in this case. But multiples of that quarter note work well too because they stay in rhythm, so a 5/4 note would be 1.830 secs which is about where you had it so it sounds pleasing too.
    As you suggest, this stuff is also very handy for figuring out your reverb pre delay, so it allows the vocal through before the slush begins. Usually works well at around 1/32 which would be 46ms in this case. You went with the slower 1/16 but I find that it tends to be too much of a gap if you are doing other stuff to control the slush (like eq, ducking). Starts to feel unnatural, like the reverb kicks in too late.
    As you suggested, this math is also handy to use in a delay unit if it doesn't convert automatically, and any other time-delayed unit that goes by ms like maybe chorus, phaser, etc.
    Not too crazy to just redo this video to correct that math part. You do a good job in explaining things, but giving people the wrong math can be more confusing than where they started.

    366 ms is not the same as 3.66 seconds (6:00), there are 1,000 ms in a second, so 366 would be .366 seconds. :)

    • @lanternhead8945
      @lanternhead8945 5 лет назад +5

      This means that the first example was 10 quarter notes (AKA: 2 and a half bars, 3.66 seconds) and not 1 quarter note, right? And the 2nd example is therefore 5 quarter notes (AKA: 1 bar and a quarter). They're still in time but seem like strange time intervals considering what is being said by Devon.

    • @lanternhead8945
      @lanternhead8945 5 лет назад +1

      I think the pre-delay that he goes with is a sixteenth note

    • @WishfulCreation
      @WishfulCreation 5 лет назад +1

      I know very little about actual music theory, but mathematically speaking, what you're saying sounds right. I don't know much about reverb either, but if you were writing lyrics using a 5 quarter note scheme, it will resync at the end of the 5th bar, which can be a cool effect. I imagine you might be able to use that idea for other effects too.

    • @lanternhead8945
      @lanternhead8945 5 лет назад

      @@WishfulCreation Nice idea to do it with lyrics. I imagine it could be very cool with a delay too. Unfortunately, with reverb, it will never resync because it is always dying after 5 quarter notes (1.25 bars). So each time a sound is made new reverb is produced and die out after the 5 quarter notes.

    I just do bpm of the song divided by 60, then it's real easy to define how much ms it takes 'per beat'...
    for instance, 120bpm /60 = 2 => this is 2 beats per second, which is 1 beat per 500ms. Done.
    This is a lot less confusing, and for most would be a more logical approach.
    I determined this calculation for myself before I read about it, cause it's simply determining how many ms 'per beat' the song is playing at.
    So you just determine first how many beats per second, and then it's already transparent how many ms you've got 'per beat'...
    When I heard about this 60000 thing afterwards I still kept using my own approach. Still do.

    • @Tekkerue
      @Tekkerue 5 лет назад +3

      Your way makes you do 2 calculations though. It works out fine with 120bpm because it's easy to determine "2 beats per second, which is 1 beat per 500ms" in your head. But try doing that with 73bpm for example.
      73bpm / 60 = 1.2167
      So how many milliseconds is that? You can't tell based on that number, so you have to divide 1 by 1.2167 to get the number of milliseconds.
      1 / 1.2167 = 0.822 or 822ms
      Using 60,000 saves you a step on your calculator and does it all in just one step.
      60,000 / 73 = 822ms
      DONE! :)

    Basically that 366 gives you a unit to work with. You can halve it or double as much as you want to get the right sound.
    Also incase anyone wondering why 60,000. 1000 ms in a second and 60 seconds in a minute (beats per MINUTE). 1000 x 60 = 60,000

  • @ndongolo

    Dude you are great! However, you should rethink your content before uploading! Your math is totally wrong! Reverb decay 1.83s IS NOT 183ms!
    Reverb decay are usually longer than delay time! In this case 1/4 not 366ms is not 3.66s that is why it sounded so long 3660 ms that is
    Thanks and again great content!

      You fail to convert milliseconds to seconds. .366ms converts to 3.66 seconds. So he's actually right. Music is nothing but math in action. If not good in math you're not going to be a very good producer or engineer.

    I'm sorry. But I think the concept of using a reverb is misunderstood here.
    It is not a tool to make things bigger or "glue" things together per se. Its made to simulate a room/space. Within that process you can create the illusion of making vocals big. The length of the reverb with all its other parameters create the size of a room. The pre delay is the simulated distance from the listening point to the source. Up close is a long pre delay, you will hear the dry signal first, the room comes after. The further away things are, the less pre delay. That is just the natural physics of how sound reacts in a room. Think of me bouncing a basket ball at the gymnasium right in front of you, and bouncing it again on the other side of the field. Go out there yourself when you can, bring some friends and do this ball bounce simulation. Record it! Use that recording as a reference track. Even crazier, put the recordings in the convolution reverb...
    0.366 second long would be a VERY short reverb. It would sound more like the gated reverb that was used in the 80's.
    Never the less, the synced pre delay is a great way to get this huge sounding vocals without muddying the shit up and timing it in the right spot.
    happy mixing my friend!

      no, not all reverbs are made to simulate a room. please do your research on digital vs acoustic reverbs before spouting your shite in the comments. plate reverbs have been the standard vocal reverb since the 60s

    Your math is wrong. you made your reverb tail 3.66 seconds long. A 3.66 second 1/4 note would mean that a single measure would be almost 15 seconds long. At 164 bpm a single measure is roughly 3 and a half seconds long. You need to put the decimal before the 3 which moves your last six to the thousands place because a millisecond is 1/1000 of a second. "0.366" Having used 3.66 seconds as your 1/4 note, your math to get an eighth note is completely meaningless. Had you used the actual length of a 1/4 note, 0.366 seconds, you would have found that your reverb was actually too short, partially because a 1/4 note reverb is almost imperceptible in the context of a vocal, but also because there is actually a half note between the end of each line and the beginning of the next in you song, not an eighth note. This means that you actually need to double from 0.366 to 0.722 which is still very short and less than half the 1.8 second time you end up using. A better method would be to just tune the reverb timing by ear, put an eq after the reverb on your reverb bus and eq out any muddiness, and finally, if completely necessary, use some ducking on the reverb tail to get it out of the way of your next line. Also..."Circumulus" not a word...
