  • Great demand for the hurleys made in Sixmilebridge by craftsman John Torpey.
Clareman John Torpey made hurleys by hand for many years, but eventually was unable to keep up with demand. With assistance from the Shannon Development Small Industry Scheme he set up his own hurley factory last year, and is now busier than ever filling orders from clubs and players all over the country.
The most important part of making the hurley is the mould, which John himself. Even though a large part of his workflow is mechanised, he still sands by hand all senior level hurls. A skilled eye is crucial as it ensures that the correct balance is maintained,
All good hurlers look for a properly balanced hurley.
Ash is his preferred material, but as there does not seem to be an emphasis on growing it by the relevant government departments, its future is uncertain,
It’s a pity really that the forestry don’t have a policy for planting ash.
And it’s not just senior players from the Banner County who prefer Torpey hurleys as they are also supplied to the County Clare primary school hurling teams.
An RTÉ News report broadcast on 26 February 1982. The reporter is Michael Walsh.

I bought a lovely Hurley stick in Irelands 41 years ago, I hung in on the wall in my shack, I take it down once ion a while and I step out side with hanging down on my right side and sometimes I carry it across my chest it still looks and feels great, it has got a lovely swing and it always hits the bay to the very spot I ask of it. I have a plan which I will carry out one day after I finish completing my life-long sentence of working day and night on the chain gang. I will step out at an All Ireland final as a guest player, I will be given the honor of striking the final ball in a hard-fought game with the scores even moments before the final whistle, I will step up, collect the ball 62 yards back, hit the ball with the most beautiful swing and score, I do not ask for a medal, a cup or a clap on the back or the cheering fans, as I will be fully satisfied with scoring with my most favorite hurley and will place for the final time up on the wall in my old shack
