One thing to mention… cab and chassis, you CAN NOT, Insure them on a personal auto policy. This being said, if you buy a cab and chassis, you have to go straight to commercial insurance policy. This sucks for people who don’t want to start a business right away, but want to purchase the truck. Personal auto, won’t insure vehicle with a gvwr of 16k and greater. Info straight from Geico, other insurers may be more accepting. I was trying to purchase a ram 5500 cab chassis. The good thing about the ford f450 pickup is the weight is 14k gvwr.
You could also retune or even overtune the cab and chassis, and they give you the room to customize and do what you want on the rails
F450 needs those big brakes cause the engine brake sucks lol ….. I sold my 2022 SRW 350 and need a dually. I loved my ford though. But I’m Bout to get a ram 3500 over an 450. They both tow the same and both have max GCWR of around 43.5k …. Would really love the wide track though… either will be a 2023 truck
Regardless of the brand doing hotshot especially in winter it better to have the 4x4 n not need then need it n not have it I can testify to that for traction in mud n snow
That is exactly what i am going to buy for my hotshot trucking.
In about a year you will be in a Ram dually they all say that about a Ford until maintenence issues start poppin up
HOLLA!!! 🙌🏻 so true, i picked up a 2020 F450 the other day!
Won't regret it.
@@bustedknucklelogistics9404 and i realized the turning when i got it compared to my Ram 100% wish exhaust brake was as good 🤷🏼♂️ cant have it all
@@azhauling4109 you already got rid of the ram? Thought I saw a video a week or so ago you just got a Ram 3500. Also, whats AZ for. Your not out of Arizona are you?
@@jstnclark no, still uploading not to tech savy, ram has 60,000 now, and coolant issue, so waiting on warranty. And i’m from east coast, not Arizona, never thought name made so much issue but in the transport industry people always think Arizona 😂 will try to upload more videos when get chance.
@@azhauling4109 haha. Was just curious is all. You staying busy?
Thanks for the information. I've been wondering which one would be best for me.
Glad to help
Just found your channel, love your setup and your honesty. I’ve got a black 2019 450 pickup and just ordered a 2021 F-Max212 so I have to say you’ve got good taste!
Thats awesome, its a great set up.
i dont mean to be so offtopic but does someone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account??
I was stupid lost the account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me
@Leonidas Flynn Instablaster =)
@Milo Kenneth I really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and im in the hacking process atm.
I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Milo Kenneth It worked and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thanks so much, you really help me out !
Thank you
One major downside to running the pickups is the 65ft length laws and even shorter in some states. Cab and chassis truck without any cargo carrying area is considered a tractor/power unit and you're good up to 75 ft just like the big trucks. Most 40 footers will put you over 65 ft with a crew cab long bed pickup hooked to it. Tow Piglet specifically used Big Tex trailers because they have shorter 8 foot necks that just barely squeak you under that limit (not because they're the best trailers or anything) where as most of them have something closer to a 9 foot neck. This has nothing to do with CDL vs non-CDL.
Good video man, never thought about the F450, I might have to look into that,
For sure worth it!
If you go without the bed you can register the truck as a tractor TR and pull longer trailers and be legal instead of it being registered as TT truck trailer
Detuned for low end torque, less weight on rears with cab and chassis, air bags= better ride anyway. Not as rough.
Love the setup! Been looking for this info!
Good review. Thanks!
We use 2020-2021 f450s at my current job for public works and those things are dogs! Definitely want to invest in one when I start hotshotting.
Dogs???
Also bigger frame on the 450. My 2020 350 gets sketchy when I get close to 40k gross
Out performs but will it outlast no if so why most Hotshot drivers use Rams 10 to 1
I've a dodge/cummins guy all my life but I'm really considering buying an f450 for hotshot, just for the bed option
U ain't a Dodge guy. Found On Road Dead = Ford
another great video man! stay safe!
Thanks for an informative vid. Did not know Ford was only one that offered the non - detuned diesel. I'd take your tee over towpiglet's any day ! 😅
I'll take that compliment all day! haha. But yes, sadly Ford is the only one that does it. Im really not sure why, I wish RAM did as well. Its a large reason a lot of people go with the 450. Its the ultimate HD pickup.
5.9 trucks are great 404k on mines and does just fine
Can’t be that great if you still have to drive that old POS
It'll work fine, just think theres some better options.
Had no idea, but we are actually in the same county! About 30 min north of ya! Hope to see your rig around here sometime, that’s a damn nice setup man! Thanks for all the info you’ve shared on the channel!
Good review
I run the same set up as you for two years no problems the connection issue on trailer I had and it was in the plug …. Small bunnies to secure plug and no more issues almost 200k mikes so far
Have you paid it off doing hotshot with how many miles you put in ?
@@vorutouzamaki2635 yeah I paid it off this year about 180k miles
Detuned for longer duty cycle
Just found your channel, great content!! Keep it going, hopefully I’ll see you on the road soon!!
enjoyed the info I like Ram but what i heard was nice be safe and thanks
I'm back again.... because I'm getting a f450 soon 😆 about start my own been CdLa 14yrs , think it's time
Same boat
Dam bro! 14 years company driver? I'm still in my 1st year and thinking fuck this corporate stuff.
I know GM detunes their medium duty trucks for longevity. GM uses the same L5P foundation, but calls it a L5D with a lower tune and smaller turbo. I don't think the lower power rating is necessarily a bad thing, but a factory bed would be nice.
Nice truck n shirt watching from California
Still no problems?
Great Tips Good Stuff 👍😀
Great information like the video
Can’t argue with that, I have a 2019 F350 dually with 112K miles and it runs like a dream, if I could start over I would get the 450👍🏽
450 is hard to beat!
@@bustedknucklelogistics9404 F550?
I beg to differ my friend. I run a 2020 F450 with a BigTex 14GN in a NON-CDL setup. The trucks GVWR is 14,000 lbs. and the trailer is derated to 12,000 lbs. so the GCWR is 26,000 lbs. That is NON-CDL so it can be done. But I do agree the F450 is the best CDL and NON-CDL truck there is!!
@@Kaatu-barada-nikto Check out the new F-600. The F-550 body with a bigger heavier rear end. You can go out to 43k on the F-600.
@@Kaatu-barada-nikto Once you hit medium-duty, EVERYTHING goes up. Insurance, plates and registration, and fuel and maintenance costs. The F600 was designed to "cheat" the increased costs of the F650. I agree that the F650 is the more capable platform, but is the cost increases worth it, or should you just jump into a Semi at that point?
Yes you can stay under by weight, but you could not pull a 40 ft trailer with it as you would be over length. And the more truck you have the less load you can haul. Everything has a trade off.
Non CDL run 3/4 ton so no derate trailer, CDL F450 only way to go
Love the vids and the tee shirt
I have a cdl and I'm trying to start hot shot driving
Great video man. Good info. It’s a hard sell for me. The 3.55 gears in a 350 sits around 1600 rpm at 65mph.
I’m about to order and the 450 is sweet but man, I wish they would offer 3.73 gears.
yea everyones got different needs. Personally I would never want 3.55, just not enough gear to me.
My dodge sits at 2000 rpm at 60 mph and anything over 60 tanks my fuel mileage at 55 to 60mph towing 8000lbs I get about 18.5 mpg
One thing I hated about my old f350 wide turns
Any year would be good for a F-450
^??
Love the info on the 450. My question to you is what exactly is the gear setup on your truck? Are they all the same in the 450? I’m looking into doing hotshot and want to get the best set up. Fuel mileage doesn’t much bother me if I’m set up the way I need to be. I’d love a shirt as well!
All 450 pickups are strictly 4.30 gears. No option for anything else. If you’re running cdl the 450 dominates based on mostly facts.
@@bustedknucklelogistics9404 the F450 can be had with 4.88 gears if you get the high capacity towing option. Prolly not the best to Hotshot with because once you are on the road, you want the mpg….as best as I can tell the 4.30s with the 10 speed seem to even pull hills fine when loaded. IMHO unless you are heavy pulling on a farm or something the 4.30s are fine BUT just wanted to let you know that 4.88s are avail.
INLINE!!! Wha-Whaaat?! Hey, isn’t chassis to settle length issue anyway? Non-cdl or cdl. Can’t get that answer settled and will be starting soon. Ur trans has two breaks in it by design just like the up and coming zf.
Like the shirt! Gimme one!
Opinions on a F550
Is harder to get a loan on a cap and chassis. I had that problem
Not sure, never had one.
There shouldn’t be much difference if at all in the RPMs between a F350 with 4:10s and a F450 with 4:30s the taller tire on the F450 equals it out to the 17s on the F350 pretty much the same ratio. F350 17” tires and the F450 19.5s.
I do NOT haul at your level so i wont act fancy...,,but i do hook and tow a lot of livestock and new horse trailers for customers. Recently purchased a F450. Incredible truck man!
Its a great truck!
How do you feel about GMC trucks ?
Thoughts on M2 ?
You don't got the answer's
I was wondering, how do you check/fill your dually air pressure? I cant reach the back ones?
I have to like jam it in there. Its hard.
Hello Good video man
Thats why Ford🇺🇸🤔sells Worldwide
because theiy make the best US Cars, but for constantly hauling, i would recommend a Manual Transmission. 🤔
@Edwoods Philosophy Yes, Wrecker Editions they got manuals, maybe older ones, here in Europe we not using Automatics, its for granny's mostly, and Trucks with Automatics not exist. 🤔🇪🇺
The best truck for cdl is something like freightliner m2 with ten speed handles the weight like a boss and more importantly it has air brakes to stop the load those little trucks cannot handle the everyday abuse I tried it bigger is usually better
Fair answer as I'm a large truck supporter but this is for the people that are set on a pick up truck. This 450 handles everything perfect but yes people for sure over work these trucks. Like guys running Mini 5 car trailers with 3500s.
Nice 👍 but can you change a tire by yourself oh nooo wowwww maintenance cost bye 👋
@@juandejesus1151 I chang all my tires myself and do all my maintenance so I still WIN oh no wow some people know how to work just cause they 22.5 that's a tire on a big truck so you know. I can change it on the side of the road before loves or pilot even answer the phone some men still know how to work and have the knowledge to keep a truck going which you better learn to be in this business
@@jonathanhudson9189 Yup, first time I had a flat(semi truck) and required road service the guy showed up in a standard service truck and just the rubber tire. My first thought was this is not right no tire machine to mount the tire on the rim then he pulled out that tire bar stripped the ratted up casing off my rime popped the new casing on the wheel and was done in about 15-20 min flat. This methode was just as fast maybe even faster. Also really simple process. In all actuallity less back breaking, if you have ever lifted wheels on and off a tire machine you know they are pretty dang heavy and this way you never have to lift the tire and wheel together. Just had to stand on the tire and rock back and fourth with beed soap/lube spray to get it to grab a beed. Once inflated roll it back over to the lugs and bucle it all up. I was thoroughly entertained learning that trick. ,However the reality for me is being fat, old and slightly less than motivated I don't mind feeding the economy and letting a stronger young buck earn a little scratch. I can't take it all with me so I pay for tire changes and I get to keep my hands clean.
Hey just curious to know what you think about the Sterling bullet?I have an 08’ 4500 with the Aisin transmission in it.
Do you know about the super duty rear axle recall
Can u use a f450 as a non cdl Hotshots
What are your thoughts on the Ford f550?
Is the f450 with a steel flat bed the same as a cab and chassis? Or is that considered a bed?
The 5.9 have less emotions and better fuel mileage and better reliability no egr and the g56 is the only good trans that they with but what's your gvawr rating for the f450 my 3500 is only 9200 lbs the truck weighs 8400 what's the f450 weigh
I'm investigating trucking as a new career. I have a couple questions for experienced people, if anyone cares to chime in. First, how come it seems like nobody talks about Chevy's for hotshot? Seems like it's Ford or Dodge. Second, if you're going CDL anyway, why go with an f450 or one of these medium duty pickups and not go with a medium duty semi, like a Freightliner FL70 or something? I mean, I guess brand new the Freightliner would be a lot more expensive but it seems like a used one in good shape might be better than a new pickup truck since they are actually built for long term, everyday load hauling?
Chevy is fairly limited in payload and reliability. In trucking payload is everything. The more you can carry the less thing your profit margin is.
Ason the Ford has a tighter turning radius.
People should know this is a non CDL Truck. CDL is only required to dive this truck towing a trailer that puts your GVW over 26000# . Ford list this truck as weighing 8,587# and GVW is 16000# so the difference is approximately 10000#, without a CDL you can tow a trailer 10000# or less. Love your truck. I have a f550 and wouldn't trade it for anything.
Ford has a bigger selection of medium duty trucks. F450, F550, F600. The F600 is basically the F650 with the regular pickup cab and footprint and comes as cab\chassis only
How much weight can you actually carry? Not including truck and trailer weight.
can you have a class b cdl and do cdl hotshot
Question? You’re saying the Ford F-450 is considered a Medium Duty Truck, With the bed, Can you legally haul in Indiana with a 40 Foot Gooseneck Trailer because the combination makes it 65 feet, and the limit in Indiana is 60 feet with a pick up bed?
I like your videos I think I live pretty close to you do ya know where oakboro North Carolina is
Yep!
To start a hotshot is to finance a truck and I've seen ur video needs to have a company name correct?
A legal LLC!
As far as truck insurance is that truck considered commercial?
What's wrong with the 2019 and up Rams?
19 and 20 have problematic pumps.
Other then the truck being better, I was thinking to get the 450 would be so you can haul those loads heavier then 16k?
Load Mizer did a video showing his ram 3500 could have about 16k weight on it
You didn’t mention that but is this correct, have a uncle about to get into hotshot
They have lower gearing to save transmission, that’s also the reason they de tune them....
Much more complex than that.
Whats the most you can tow
Depends on same variables but 18k is a safe number.
Why not just do semi instead of hotshot?
Can I use this for non cdl to start?
The 450 truck only has 14k gvw though.
Correct but only "Legally". The trucks actually ratings are much higher. Sore subject.
I just dont understand how you drivers arent getting shut down for being over length pickups are capped at 65ft cab and chassis are 75ft please explain
I'm like 67.
Answer to title: because you love being shut down for CP4 failures. Or did u swap to CP3?
What brand of tires do you run
The chassis cabs are detuned because of their payload capacity. Chassis cabs nearly double the payload on an 450 with the bed.
Can you write off mileage sense it’s built as a commercial vehicle?
yes
Forgot to mention the F550. Cab and chassis are DETUNED for reliability and longevity, since there focused on Commercial use.
Correct. Most people will say it’s because a lot of those vehciles are abused especially by employees. Every guy I talk to with a detuned truck says it’s miserable.
@@bustedknucklelogistics9404 My F550 with 430, deleted with a tow tune pulls my car hauler on 22.5's with 0 issues. I barely go over 15 pounds of boost.
What truck should i get if I'm going to haul horse trailers ?
Depends on the trailer you're wanting to pull. I need more info.
Lets get that 2200 subs, I need a new shirt! Great breakdown on the likes you have for the F450. Nice and informative. The lack of detuned engine is a great plus (even though it's still not a Dodge ;) )
Can't argue that. Dodge will always hold a place in my heart haha. I will say tho, these newer super duties have for sure made me open up tho. I love this truck.
Ford is ok but For towing nothing beats ram with Cummins and aisin combo. Ram also has air suspensions because they know people tow with ram. If only ram made a 4500 in pickup
The only way to get air on the 4500/5500 is the ambulance package and that's not something you just simply find. I'm a big fan of both brands but right now ford is just the better truck.
What is the kind and length of your trailer? I have the same truck and worried about length laws.
I think I'm at like 66. F450 and 40 foot Diamond-C
Will the F-350 work for hotshot
Sure!
Thanks for sharing this info, it is very useful.
Do you know if the detuned Chassis can be tuned up to HPs and torque you have on yours?
Thanks once again. Great work!
I think you would need a Banks programer to get the power be you want. It's 50 state legal, mad will not void the warranty.
Yea, but you'd have to tune and delete the truck which is better anyway. But you're still left with not as good parts.
how long is your truck with trailer?
some hotshots are saying there is a problem with length in some states.
I think like 67 foot. Ive never had an issue.
Thank you for all the videos and information 💪 very helpful
did you add auxillary fuel tank?
Yes
I’m barely getting my hotshot business if the ground, that being said didn’t have the capital to buy a nice truck like that. I’m starting of with F250 single wheel in the rear with a 28ft trailer what are your thoughts?
Need more specs than that.
@@bustedknucklelogistics9404 sorry. F250 Super Duty gasser and 28+5 dove tail Big Tex Trailer. I’m out of Los Angels CA. I don’t have the truck to do long hauls. Do you think I can make it doing locally with what equipment that I have?
@@frankvelasco7003 fuel cost will eat your lunch in a gasser.
Any cp4 fuel issues ??? Rams having issues
Nope! Keep the filters changed and good fuel in it.
you get more mpg flatbed semi and more money this setup to me my opinion makes no sense if you have cdl might as well get a semi with this..
14:15 if u rebuild the bitch it won't break down. I'll take a 7.3 with 400k all day if it's dirt cheap leaving budget to send it to the machine shop and get new injectors
I would suggest that the “F-450 pickup” really should have been called an F-375. It has a lower cargo capacity than the “F-350 pickup” at the expense of better towing. But it’s GVWR is the same as the 350. The heavier tires and brakes actually l cause a reduction in cargo capability. Yes. It’s a good looking pickup, but at the end of the day is still a class 4 truck with an attempt at some clever marketing (F-450 must be better than a F-350 -right?!)
I’m looking for a pickup to build into an overlander; the F-450 chassis cab meets my requirements but the F-350 and F-450 pickups do not.
Ooops. It’s a class 3 truck.
Why F-450 is not a non CDL?
Looking at a 450 and 40' fmax212. If my research is correct overall will be 67'??
Yep, my exact setup.
I have f450 with gatormade custome 38ft and I’m right at 65.
