Cousins and cofounders Rob and Joshua Church share the wild ride of how they built Edge Theory Labs and created the world's first portable, iceless ice bath, The Edge Tub.
Edge Theory Labs was born out of a lofty goal: cross the finish line of a full Ironman triathlon. Rob and Joshua Church were looking for an edge to optimize their triathlon training, recovery and performance.
In 2018, while deep in the throws of training, Joshua embarked on a life changing trip to Iceland where he explored the Wim Hof method and dove deep into breathework practices and cold water immersion.
Joshua returned from his trip hooked on the power of the cold, and together he and Rob started doing ice baths regularly after training sessions and began seeing incredible results.
They were experiencing immediate relief after workouts, shaving days off of recovery and able to hit the next day’s training even harder. Plus, they were experiencing more energy, sharper focus, and a vibrancy of aliveness.
However, after constant trips to 7-11 for bags of ice, they began seeking a more permanent, sustainable, environmentally friendly ice bath solution. After researching cold tubs online, they were disappointed at the limited options available and the $10,000 starting price point.
Fueled by the desire to create a practical solution for themselves, Rob and Josh set out on a fun cousin project to build a DIY tub in Rob’s garage.
Utilizing Rob’s engineering and tinkering skills, they were determined to create a cold tub that:
- Was actually designed for human use (not a freezer, horse trough, or fancy trash can)
- Was powerful, that could be kept cold without needing to add ice and stay cold even with frequent usage
- Was always clean without harsh chemicals or having to drain and refill every few days
- Was easy to setup and didn’t require special tools, plumbing, or electric
- Was portable so we could set it up on my apartment balcony and take with us to races and events
- Didn’t cost tens of thousands of dollars
After 2 years of research, development, prototyping, and testing on the side of both of their full time jobs… The Edge Tub was born.
And with it, a mission to help people unlock their maximum human potential - to stress less and achieve more. Edge Theory is more than just a tub. It’s a movement, an ethos, a community of people committed to stepping beyond their comfort zones and living their Personal Best in mind, body and spirit.
