    That’s the great thing about this film it presupposes the audiences intellect. It never talks down to you; it throws you into the world you as the audience are left to discern it. That’s the genius of this film the way the narrative structure is delineated it makes the audience no matter who; Damon’s contemporary and equal and see things from his perspective.

    Get Russillo ready, the Fear episode needs to happen. His research of Boston area correctional facilities an how they formed Wahlberg's character will be iconic. If you're redoing Rounders and somehow chose it for your New York movie (I get Bill loves it as a Gen X gambling addict, and one for us movies are a staple of this pod, but this isn't a top 25 NY movie), you need an adrenaline injection for the pod. I don't see eye to eye with Van often but his take on how sad watching poker is what spot on.

    Very proud that I saw this in the movie theater. About Mike's GF... He is an addict and he is back on the sauce. He has obviously promised it was a thing of the past but it's back. Her character is extremely believable and justified.

      I skip any scene she's in, but I agree that her character is believable. Maybe not likeable, but definitely believable. After all, Jo was with him at the time he blew his roll (which she mentions). And we also know that she's just as pissed off at him for lying to her.
      That said, if Mike is as good as he is depicted to be, it seems like she should also know he can make his money back as long as he actually practices some bankroll management. He must have made more money toward law school at the tables than he did with an hourly job.

    Norton was on the ascension towards all time greatness but he never did the politics well. Oscar nomination for Primal Fear & American History X, the cult favorite in Fight Club. That early career run. He did what is comparable now to what Luka Doncic is doing. Just instantly became one of the greats right off the bat. And did everything but win a ring.
    His career is still great but he started off as Luka and finished off as Tobias Harris. Not bad, he was a valuable 3rd option on movies like Moonrise Kingdom. But, still a supporting option. He was supposed to be De Niro! Vying for more Oscars. Getting more roles offered.
    Imagine the talents of Luka. Someone who can do it all, does it with flair but in a humble way. Can play multiple characters, multiple personalities. But is not wanted by teams. And only offered bench roles or starting roles on losing teams.

    In Heads up, 2 handed poker the odds of all 4 cards of a particular value being dealt in Texas Hold em are 1/250,000 roughly. Maybe Mike was hoping KGB didn't have aces but as the hand played out there was no way he's ever playing that hand differently given the odds. But it's a movie and reality is never as interesting as fiction.

    • @6thwilbury2331
      @6thwilbury2331 10 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, that hand is a total cooler, especially when it's a button vs. flat call in the BB. The chances KGB has AA is even smaller because he didn't three-bet pre. Can't fault Mike for stacking off there. The only thing Mike did wrong was sitting down with his entire roll as a single buy-in.

    This is UNBEARABLE to listen to on the podcast - mainly because of Van Lathan. He’s bad enough as it is when it’s a regular Podcast, but a live Podcast - no thanks! He makes everything race related, and dial’s it up with an audience here. If you do a “black movie” fine, but when I just want to listen to what the movie is about, without the “N” word, or everything somehow related to. I’m sorry, but after 20 minutes, I just couldn’t take it… as a “white” listener. A shame bc, it’s a movie I like and wanted to listen to the positive and negative reviews.

      No he doesn't. Simmons is usually so good at placing and identifying talent, this feels like such a weird miss.
