    Bonjour Alexis,
I am a retired Spanish teacher and in my classes, I used short film clips like Disney shorts to help students acquire better listening comprehension and enhance vocabulary. But before viewing the clip, the new vocabulary was taught and practiced in class. Then, while viewing the film clip, I would stop and ask short questions about a scene. Afterwards, I'd play the clip without pausing. A short reading from the clip would follow. This would often take a full class session. This method provided lots of opportunity for conversing in a fun way. My students enjoyed it immensely! ❤

I can't believe someone is actually recommending relatively new series to improve French. For some reason all French study materials and teachers usually recommend films and series from 40-50 years ago. I was beginning to think French cinema workers extinct and nobody makes new films are series anymore. xD Thanks for the video Alexa

I've watched "Very Secret Service" many times AND The Bridgertons has French audio with (CC) which means it matches word for word. Without the (CC) it's approximate. That rule holds true on most Netflix shows. This way I can watch the show in English, understand it and then switch to French language with French subtitles and understand it in French. I just wish Neflix kept the CC up longer.

The worst part about watching with subtitles is that quite often the audio dialogue does not match the subtitles which makes listening to the audio quite difficult. However, if you can pick out the audio, it's interesting to see the different ways to say the same thing in French.
A quick example is at the beginning of every episode of The adventures of ladybug and cat noir. Ladybug says, "Je suis Marinette," but the subtitle is "Je m'appelle Marinette." The point being that every phrase of every episode is like this where the audio does not match the subtitles.

I really enjoyed watching "A Very Secret Service," a spy/comedy series set in France in the 1960s. I learned a little bit about history, too, along the way. From a sci-fi perspective, I enjoyed "Osmosis," which stars the same actor, coincidentally enough, who plays a Steve Jobs-like figure who's invented a way to find your soul mate.

Thanks for a very helpful video.
A similar approach that I am also using is watching the French dubbed version of English language films that I know well - so I know what's happening and what the dialogue would be in English while I hear it in French. It's even interesting to hear how the French audio actors pronounce people and place names the French way.
Every film is different, but I have had problems with some films where the French subtitles paraphrase the French audio that can be confusing. I like the films where the subtitles match the wording of the spoken dialogue.

Sorry if this is something you've covered before, but could you shed some light on "j'aime bien" for me? I had always assumed that bien was an intensifier and that it would mean something like "I really like...", but after using Duolingo for a while to brush up on the French I learned in school 15 years ago I'm now not so sure I fully understand how to use it, Duolingo also seems to sometimes use "j'aime" to mean either "I like" or "I love", which I thought would be "j'adore", so maybe you could do a video on how to express how much you like or love something or someone?

    • @duckyduke954
      @duckyduke954 3 года назад +2

      J'aime bien would be I like, j'aime is I love and J'adore is I adore, in degrees of intensity it's J'aime bien < j'aime < j'adore ! But j'aime beaucoup is more intense than j'aime, it's I love it *so much* or *a lot*

Now I need to know what the other six arts are :D I've already been making use of this technique but I'm always up for some recommendations! I recently watched a French dub of Battle Royale which left me with the unusual experience of watching a Japense movie dubbed into French with English subtitles. It made me laugh because I could often spot a difference between what the French said and what the subtitles read. They might have the same general meaning but were said in different ways!
J'ai perdu mon corps was worth a watch! Also even if watching in English, you can often put on French subtitles and learn the other way around :)

Unfortunately Lupin was dubbed over. I guess here in the states some of the shows were picked to be dubbed in English.

You should be able to change that, while the show is playing mouse-over the thing that looks like a speech balloon in the lower right corner. It will let you pick the language for your audio and your subtitles.

@@lisadioguardi5742 we typically watch our Netflix on our DVD player, so I can't do all of those things on that, I will log in on my laptop to see what options I can preset the account to.....thanks for that.....it's weird that it's only that show though, I'm able to watch other French films and TV shows with English subtitles, but not Lupin (it doesn't even have substitutes, it's literally dubbed over). I can tell because the English doesn't line up with the movement of the lips.

Kindly think about the french communication classes online. It would be better way for beginners to learn this language.
    Thanks.

I love "Les Petits Meurtres d'Agatha Christie" (Agatha Christie's Criminal Games), great fun! Only available here in Australia on SBS on Demand (Special Broadcasting Service's online viewing app) so no option for subtitles in French unfortunately. Would love it if you chose a a scene from one of the many episodes for an upcoming similar video. Thanks.
