I found the C2 sentence to be easier to understand than the C1.
In general I find technical topics in French far easier to understand than material intended for children.

That makes sense cause with elevated French the vocabulary and syntax are actually closer to elevated English. Daily conversational French is simpler French but harder for English speakers to understand cause the similarities aren’t there. It’s the same for French people learning English. They can understand an intellectual lecture but fail with cartoons in English.

Watch out, because we don’t really say « je ne suis pas natif ». It is very off. We would more likely say « je ne suis pas né dans un pays francophone ». « Natif » isn’t a word that we link to any language: we only do that in english.

  • @mybestideas1

    This was very useful!
I'm one of those people who didn't learn French formally. I took Pimsleur levels and that got me to a nice conversational level, but my reading and writing sucks. A French professor administered informal DELF test on me for B1 and I passed (68.5 points). Still, this is not bad for the few months of work : )
When I took your tests, I scored 8/10 in B1, I scored 7/10 in B2, 6/10 in C1 and 4/10 in C2. I guess it shows that the language is flowing, and it does not progress linearly.
The way I differentiate the levels is how long you can speak about one subject. In B1 maybe a minute, or two. In B2, three to five minutes, if known subject maybe 10. For C level this can go on, half an hour or so, it can be a debate.
Thank you again. In particular, I liked your video comparing imparfait and conditionel.

I did french immersion from Kindergarten till grade 12, so I feel like depending on the skill my level fluctuates. Grammar is defiantly my weakest... at least when speaking its harder to notice conjugation mistakes because many endings sound the same. My comprehension is quite good and if there is a word I don't know, I can usually understand what is going on due to the surrounding words. I do notice that when it comes to vocabulary, if the word doesn't come up in conversation often (ex. a doorknob), I may forget it, but as stated earlier, I can understand based on context. Similar story with reading. I also feel like because my social studies and sciences were in french, I can understand that specialized vocabulary and discuss politics in French. We learned French idioms but I haven't memorized them... I rarely use Idioms in English anyways. On the B1 and B2 quizzes I tend to make conjugation mistakes, but on the C2 level quiz I got 8/10 because I can understand what is going on... so yeah... all that to say my level is mixed haha

Sadly I could understand listening to C2. When I read it I was correct. But I am on the A2 cusp of B1 level of comfort. This is because of cognates in the upper levels of english and in French. French became high English!

It's been almost three months since I touched any French. I learned it for about three months back in 2019. Got 10/10 in A0, 9/10 in A1, 8/10 in A2 and 4/10 in B1, and then I stopped there. I feel like I have definitely forgotten lots of grammar and can't remember many words. Will definitely check out your videos if I want to re-learn French.

  • @paulfaulkner6299

Having had some sleep, I have gone through and done each test. I only had one level perfect which was actually A1 !!! My results: A0=9/10, A1=10/10, A2=9/10, B1=8/10, B2=8/10, C1=5/10, C2=6/10.... What does this tell me? I was comfortable with B2 and although I made a couple of mistake, these would polish out within weeks, I'm sure. For both C levels, in all fairness I was having 'educated guesses' and scored what I'd expect from that strategy. That said, personally: I didn't do it (French) at school - I learned to speak, read, write and actually (as an aside) _think_ in French in my later teenage years - _getting and having a French girl friend certainly helped_ - and it's been more than 40 years now since I last actively set about studying it. I really am astounded with myself in all fairness in what I *can* remember. The only practice my French has really had in the last 4 decades has been the annual Mediterranean holiday with me armed with a small dictionary (which has been invariably unused). I can remember, for example, asking someone what the name for a cloud was while discussing the likelihood of rain at a roadside eatery (having to describe a cloud _as there wasn't one in the sky at that time_ ) when driving back from Bayonne up the west coast, intending to cover another 300km that day. It polishes up each time I go and the speed at which I can both speak and listen tunes in. At some point I will have to join Alexa's course to get some help on the bits that are missing and go and sit a recognised exam - but right now I've been learning Spanish about 20 months (with the last 15 totally solo out of books & online videos because the adult education classes have been closed). I want my Spanish to be better than it currently is so I can enjoy going there on holiday too. _I have not been out of the country (UK) for around 3 years like most of the rest of you because of Covid_ I can see that I will continue the Spanish until I am happy I have and will retain it (ie like my French is now), go and have a bash at Italian _because having decent working knowledge of French & Spanish should greatly assist its acquisition too,_ then come back to French _pour me perfectioner._ That sounds like a plan...

It is late now (3am or so) - so no test right now but _quiero decir que hacerlo (el examen) manana. Necesito me cama ahora_ ... I now have the bug for this (trying to learn other languages). I intend to have a go at Italian {once I've been to Spain on holiday for a fortnight and done nothing but speak it all the time - I have not been out of the country since before I started learning it because of Covid}. What I find really surprising is that even though I started (and stopped) learning French when I was a teenager, it still comes back, every time I go (to France) and just recently whilst trying to learn Spanish I still bring French words into Spanish. I have forgotten SO MUCH French vocabulary but then odd words just pop up if I have tried to think about it. Really strange. Also I will say this - I really could "think" in French when I was chatting with the girlfriend or her mates but now I have to juggle and think in English on the go translating back and forth as I go. This makes me slower than I used to be (and is the same in Spanish too) - but I just think it's practice. Spanish (grammar) *IS* much easier than French which is much stricter. I speak both French and Spanish (as you would expect) with a heavy English accent, and I have to say that Spanish is easier to pronounce for us (native English) too. But French is a much, much more romantic language to listen to. To my English ear (even though I now understand quite a lot of what is being said), "romance" just sounds romantic in French. I still think that French sounds far more "sexy" than Spanish ever could. I also think that Spanish would come behind Italian too in that regard (but I need to learn how to speak in that before giving a definitive view). So there you go, French, Spanish & English.
I find the similarities and differences between French & Spanish fascinating. 2 verbs to be, 2 verbs to have
Je dois aller au lit / tengo que ir a mi cama / I must go to bed! Bonsoir / buenas noches / goodnight ....

It's my third language (second is english) but languages in my opinion get easier as you learn more since they share common charasteristics especially between languages from similar language families and continents.
