    Thank you very much for interviewing Kiana. I have watched her Atlantic crossing video three times and was very frustrated because there was no hint on how the cat was steered, she was never at the helm nor was there an autopilot to be seen installed somewhere. But now I know how she and the boat did it ! It also sheds some light on James Wharram as having been a genius naval architect.

      Loved it. I could watch this stuff all day. Kiana is a force to be reckoned with. What an amazing woman. So inspirational. I watched her Atlantic crossing, but due to her free spirit nature I did find it hard to find more of her. I'm so looking forward to tracking her down & hopefully watching some more inspiring footage. Having someone like la Vega bond come on to ask her questions is just amazing. & Kiana answered them all so well. I will be sharing this episode around. Love it. I would love to join the yca. The only thing that I'm missing is my youth. (That's all just a memory now. Lol). I do recall trying to join a long time ago. I just don't know if it got completed.
      Keep up the good work 💪. SV Kiwi Lady Opua Bay of islands New Zealand 👍🏿

    "I look back on my time in the boatyard fondly". YES. I've spent a lot of hours in yards, volunteering work on tallships. Its so incredibly edifying, and you get to put your spirit into the boat with your own two hands. :-)
    Of course, rum and swearing are the evocation needed to get the spirit moving...

    Wooden boats as far as I'm concerned rule the water.

    Good interview it makes me feel good to see another story of Kiana. I watched a few Videos from amazing Wharram renovations. Just looked to all the Videos from Marc refitting his old Wharram in Amsterdam where Hanneke Boon even dame by to help. For me the Wharram sailers are the most genuine, even this one with these extraordinairy mast from a telephone mast from Portugal an a beam from an old paddle amazing.

    no doubt Kiana is a legend, a Moitessier like free spirit in urge to "save her soul" ( or live up to her soul i would say),
    a modern time explorer / adventurer / to inspire many entangled human soul,
    but i can t help thinking she was very "lucky" / good karma / blessed / looked upon during hers few ocean crossing
    with a boat in this state.... we need heroes to last these days
    to go down the hull and forget about the the bad weather for some time means she has a very rare , intimate, confident realationship

I still work a land job but just want my freedom i almost ended up living back on land again and this is mainly because of the job as i feel i would like a bigger sailboat and prefer something full keel and heavier. Bit stressful but would love to join this community thanks for talking about it

    Andy, I've been a subscriber for some time now and have never stepped foot on a sail boat. Too old and broken and will only feed the fish if I did. But I love watching the hundreds of sailing channels that I am subscribed to and I love the podcasts you do through this channel.
    This series is going to be really good to watch, because we get to see what makes these people tick and this one in particular is of interest to me because there's another young sailor (don't know if he is a member of the young cruisers) who has a Wharram and is rebuilding it, who is Mark from Wilding Sailing, and I was interested in why he was so fixated on this type of Cat. Now after watching Kiana's interview I understand. She is an inspiration to so many people and evidence that you can get out there on your own and do this, but when it comes to the boat, this particular vessel seems to have a symmetry with the ocean. No need for an autopilot? That would have to be the dream for any sailor.
    Great video Andy. Thanks for sharing!

    great communication .Thanks ! As potential revenue for the participants of this community : collect data on potential DIY cruising boats for sale ,your members are bound to see ,or hear about worthwhile boats and become a hub for interested buyers ,potential boats and individuals ( members ) ,who would participate in the refit by remote advice ,or actual work on the boat project . once you do a refit on your own boat ,owners have the best preparation for cruising on that boat .many would need a helping and guiding hand of an experienced DIY cruiser and your association and members could have an additional income and satisfaction to help a new cruiser and potentially safe a worthy boat .

      thats a really good idea! need to find someone to fund it!

    • @kayweiss1862
      @kayweiss1862 Год назад

      DIY cruisers do have certain skills ,beyond technical skills they acquired on their own boat refit . Often DIY have skills in how to find best deals in buying ,refit and location for refit , certain confidence in what can be done by oneself ,limiting expert costs and disasters .In addition ,a cruiser association can skillfully expand and use their network Some/many brokers ,surveyors ,boat owners wanting to sell, are known to be less than truthful and many prospective buyers - want to be cruisers ,would appreciate and pay
      for service from a reputable association with selected DIY cruising members . The more that association truly stands for and practice environment protection ,the more help and funds will be found . There is far more possible and needed ! 1 example :Let's say ,one member knows about a good boat in Panama ,but has no time and interest to offer help to potential buyers .Another member has time ,maybe financial need , is nearby and could become a physical working mentor, or remote mentor ,with specific skills for that refit . ..... so many mutual benefit scenarios ,far more than space permits to write down here .

For me I listen to the old owner, he built her & though he is long dead sadly, when I'm really stuck, I feel sure he drops me a hint to get me on the right track & strangely it's lovely, not at all creepy !

    I’m 60 years old. Never sailed, but as long as I can remember wanted to. In between a pipe dream and freedom to do it. I believe if I don’t the regret will be explained when faced with “why not”. Growing older and facing mortality is less fun than some might think. Doing so and abandoning a deeply felt desire, or dream perhaps.. hurts my heart.. negative thoughts enter and linger.. sadness results. And for what. Jealousy and admiration creep. Hell of a deal.

    request to your community and all participants : Research for meaningful revenue and reinvest in research and application of environment protection in cruising life ,esp. concerning trash . cruiser trash (plastic packaging,.... ) and trash found on the sea and beaches/islands .There are some small initiatives ,but not commonly known ,nor supported enough . Apart from showing the beauty and realities of cruising life ,as some cruisers show ,all/most/many/some could become active ambassadors for environment protection and this could be far more researched/supported/discussed/organized . Many components of boats and cruising life are toxic to environment and current and future owners and business connected to cruising life could be helped in how to protect environment ,what products are less harmful and how to recycle ,including how to recycle entire boats ,esp. 'plastic' boats . For instance, instead of shredding 'plastic' boats and dumping contents into landfill , one might be able to build sheds, water tanks ,swimming pools ,roofs ..... shelters ...barns
    with boat hulls ..... . lots of creativity and research asked for and potential even extra revenue and increased environment awareness ,linked with a more meaningful, more caring life .

      i think a lot of people living on the water are very considerate of their impact on ecosystems. the pressure needs to be applied to regulators and legislatures who dont do enough and pander rather than solve

    • @kayweiss1862
      @kayweiss1862 Год назад

      yes ,experiencing the beauty of nature and cruising lifestyle instills a preserving wish ,but that could be far better supported and implemented .wishful thinking of change in regulators and legislature is rather lazy ,excuse the bluntness . an association of (young )cruisers has more options and hopefully long lives . one good example is the initiative of young sailors to bring certain boxes and know how ,to remote islands with plastic problems ,own and beached ,by being able to melt certain plastics into usable utensils ,needed technic provided in the box . despite knowledge of plastic problem in oceans and on beaches and bodies ,one can see many cruisers accepting plastic bags for grocery shopping and dumping their accumulated trash on islands with questionable ,or no solution for the trash .often just holes are dug by locals and materials sooner or later will end up in the sea and living bodies . same for cleaning and washing materials and packaging and..... these and other dynamics can be far better organized and
      communicated .
