Great final track for a really great album, my second favorite Steven's solo album after hand Cannot Erase, and Steven's mix and production always so perfect
Thanks for doing this album Justin as it is one of my favourites. I think that you picked up everything except that he thought that the Raven was his sister Lilly reincarnated. (This comes across in the animation that was made specifically to accompany this track). I cannot remember if you have done the Album ‘ Hand Cannot Erase’ in Full but if not, please put it on the to do list. It was the album directly after this one and IMHO is the best of his solo work to date.
Digging the Seattle shirt, btw. My folks live about 5 miles from that Twin Falls hike you did. Crazy that in 40 years of them living there that I've never gone. ✌
Love this song..my fave off the album as well...its epic power reminds me of Genesis..the video is a must watch.....I agree with the comment about Hand Cannot Erase...its actually a step up...and worth a full album listen....its awesome....
So - Steven Wilson is incredibly talented. And the fact he is remastering classic albums (including many from XTC's catalog) make's him even more of a legend. That said, with all his albums, as impeccable as they are, I have always hoped for a little more of the emotional attachment to the melody, lyrics found in other progressive - or Neo progressive artists. This track, for me, delivers on that!
With Routine, one of my favorite song from Steven as solo artist. Masterpiece song from a wonderful album! Try to see the song with the video with animation which explain the context and delivers better the mood of the lyrics.
A wonderfully sad, gorgeous, and emotional song. This song impacts me everytime. I'm glad you finally got around to finishing this album. It is a favorite of mine. I see "Hand Cannont Erase" is being highly suggested in the comments. I agree, it is a great follow-up to this album.
I really enjoyed your review and reaction to this album. The follow up album Hand Cannot Erase has the same dream team line up and a continuation of this quality of prog goodness. Worthy of a listen.
Better late than never! Best song on the album, and arguably the best thing SW ever recorded as a solo artist. Just stunning, despite being the simplest piece of songwriting from such a prog-heavy album. And good for you for not doing the video at the same time, Justin. The music speaks for itself.
This line up is definitely the best live band I’ve ever seen. So talented, everyone involved. Nick Beggs has come a long way since his days in KajaGooGoo.
As a track played in isolation, I like it but don't love it. I think when listening as a final track after listening to everything before it, I think it works much better.
I like it but, musically, I don’t love it. The same chords repeated over and over again with a gradual building of intensity. It doesn’t take me as far as I want to go. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Soon, the last section of Gates of Delirium by Yes, DOES take me to where I want to go. Deeper and more interesting chord progressions, longer and more interesting musical phrases, contrasting sections of chord progressions and melodies all without changing the character of the piece. Soon is a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.
I was opposite. I wanted the drums to break out sooner. I am thinking of Heart and Nada One musical pattern. Learning from you it was the album's closer I can bend to your opinion. I get it.
Three birds continue to 'crow', as I prepare to leave this show. Continuing to disrupt my haven, my little younger ravens. On and on, they continue to vex and crow, but I will love them till it's my time to go! I just ask for a little peace and quiet in this thing. But my younger ravens,in my ears, continue to sing! Peace & Love.
prelude to joannie - aerosmith radiohead ? one from ok computer? ed harcourt - the beautiful lie A trio of triggers after two minutes. Good vocals from the heart on this one . A trifle wishy washy Kateybushyist so far but better than Steve Hackett's 21st Century offerings though apart from "? Freedom" song which was triumphantly bombaSTIC & melodic This SW effort is quickly evaporating though as I type... Is all music from this century as one digital dimension ? Quite Possibly, unless you're Stornoway. Field Music. and Tim Wheeler's debut in 2014 but even that is becoming a trifle processed by now. In fact, Field Music are runnin low on steam but the Oxford boys Stornoway, despite suffering lower hype ratings , are now Totally Organic , flying high widem Birds. Glad I heard this. Why say "Raven" though, as if the Prog Giant comparisons weren't as pronounced already? Stornoway used Bonxie and they attack him from the air for it. "Too Produced" they squawked last week, as Brian tried to retreat in peace to St Kilda's Island. No way Jose. The Birds Have Eyes. And I have Ears. Diolch JP. Stop Press . Heard The new Lilac Time acoustic No Drums LP yesterday. It's simple enough but in this day an age a bit more colour wouldn't have gone amiss. Huh First impressions eh? Usually Way off the Mark.
2nd listen on the phone... Beautiful violin. Drew me in. So, I've learnt a lesson today. No typoe - concentray toe!! Though is the Ending still too Bleak? No. It's fine. The Final Cut before the Wall? How radical would that be JP. Go on laddie, be a rebel!!
I'm not sure why there's any debate about which is Wilson's best solo album when this is so clearly the answer. The fact that his last two haven't been within touching distance of this one led to a lot of disappointment amongst his longer-term fans and though he's been on various media explaining his desire to explore other avenues, his dismissal of those who do not share that desire seems a bit disrespectful. Anyway, since then we've had a very good Porcupine Tree album and what is hinted at being a return to proggier shores in his next solo album. Crossed fingers.
Why is it disrespectful? I rather like an musician who is exploring new grounds, than one who is only making music to fulfill the expectations of some of his fans. Often these artists only end up producing the same album over and over again.
@@chrisb.2178 Yeah, it's not his exploration that's disrespectful - he's free to make whatever music he wants - but some of his comments about fans who prefer different styles of music. I agree that everyone should strive to do something new but I think criticism of what I see as his wandering down the blind alley of Abba-style pop is fair. It's all a matter of taste, after all. My tastes are never going to chime exactly with any one person's all the time. On Raven they did. On To the Bone, they didn't. It's not worth falling out with anyone because of changing tastes.
I think I am quite the opposite. I think that Steven has far exceeded his work in Porcupine Tree. And I really love his stuff with the Tree. But, for example, I will listen to Raven, or Hand or Bone far more than anything by the Tree these says. Hand, in particular, I think is the finest album he’s ever made.
Ah, the voice of reason, shining like a candle in the darkness. This guy needs an intervention by his mates. Sounds like the miserable get needs a good night out to cheer him up. And while they're about it maybe they could tell him you don't have to drag every track out to near double figures min-wise... 🙂
You must watch the video that comes with the song for full impact.
Yes! The video adds a lot to this track.
What a great album. New Steven Wilson on the horizon!!!
To me it IS the best track on the album, and one of the best songs from solo Steven.
Such a beautiful and touching piece, but not cheesy at all. Best song on the album, and maybe even of Steven Wilson’s entire career.
Definitely cheesy, no denying. Its beautiful tho
@@justsomejusstsome8994 I actually dont find it cheesy at all. It's very understated and subtle; not overly dramatic
The first time I saw Wilson live, he said this was his favorite song he’d written. And seeing it live was absolutely brilliant.
Yes, as with Drive Home and Routine, the video that accompanies this song adds an unexpected emotional impact.
“Hand. Cannot. Erase.” Next. Excellent.
Great final track for a really great album, my second favorite Steven's solo album after hand Cannot Erase, and Steven's mix and production always so perfect

The Raven and Hand Cannot Erase are Wilson's peak solo albums IMO.
I cant hear this this song now without seeing the incredibly beautiful video that goes with it .
I liked Drive Home the most on this album because of Guthrie Govan's superb guitar solo.
One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded.
Digging the Seattle shirt, btw. My folks live about 5 miles from that Twin Falls hike you did. Crazy that in 40 years of them living there that I've never gone. ✌
there is magic dripping off every note.
This will always be the album of my life. That record changed my life, literally!
Love this song..my fave off the album as well...its epic power reminds me of Genesis..the video is a must watch.....I agree with the comment about Hand Cannot Erase...its actually a step up...and worth a full album listen....its awesome....
Beautiful music melody and delivery. I am not familiar with the artist, but this song is sad and great
You’d be opening yourself to a lot of great music if you got more familiar with the artist.

Thanks Oobenoob!
My favourite song on the album. So much emotion and atmosphere. There is also a very cool video that goes with it, worth checking out.
For me, the last piano notes represent the raven finally singing...
One of the most moving prog tracks ever...

I rarely listen this track. I love it but it's always a punch in the stomach
Exactly. It's a really tough go. The video kills you.
This line up is definitely the best live band I’ve ever seen. So talented, everyone involved. Nick Beggs has come a long way since his days in KajaGooGoo.
So good! More Porcupine Tree, please?
Steven, on this track, sounds like he's got a bad cold and a blocked up nose.
I have to ration myself watching the video on disc. I weep every time.
quelle merveille !!!!
Best track...Yes. Drive home close 2nd.

The. Saddest. Prog. Song. Ever.
Until the next Album ‘Routine’?

As far as your great comment goes
It’s seeped deep in poetic prose
I see what you did
You sly little kid
Your creative mind definitely shows

Meh. SW on his own continues to leave me unmoved, which always puzzles me because I adore his Porcupine Tree work.
All of PT or just the later albums? If you like lightbulb sun and before then i am truly surprised that you do not like TRTRTS.
