The first time I cried listening to a song. It was strange! Actually, that's THE album that changed my life. Somehow made me face my fears, my depression and everything 5 years ago. I'm writing it and the Guthrie solo appears... Almost crying again and a lot of chills happening. Thanks Mr. Steven Wilson
Thats absolutely amazing man, appreciate you sharing that. I think its so interesting just how much music can affect us in every respect. Truly a powerful thing.
Led Lemos : I can relate. The song ‘The Raven Who Refused to Sing’ hit me hard. I lost my sister 30 years ago so this song had me balling my eyes out. Beautiful and powerful music.
@@sidecardog5244 Oh! I'm sorry! That album and Hand Cannot Erase are powerful, emotional, with such a deep lyrics, thoughts. The history of TRTRTS is strong. Probably the saddest song of all time. Also Routine, with the brilliant music video, made think of life, humans beings, how selfish the world is in every way. I'm grateful to have knowledge to listen theses songs and expand my mind! J, do a reaction video with Routine music video. It's a masterpiece. Probably the best music video I ever seen.
Hey JP. So glad you're getting to Mr. Wilson and the most incredible guitarist in the world Guthrie Govan. That guitar solo is a first take on a guitar he never played before and the E string fell out of it's saddle so he couldn't even use it. You can't teach that. His solo on this is Holdsworth-esque.
Steven wilson is a genius musician In my opinion he is the father of prog music right now A lot of bands one of them is Opeth they take inspiration from him
That's very nice. Very Floyd-ian, with Genesis-y intro. It appears that Steven Wilson has a background in psychedelic. Listened to the PT debut, yesterday, for the first time. That was the trippiest record I have heard since...well, Atom Heart Mother or Animals or Meddle. Somehow, I had a different impression of PT. This album sounds like it could have been the blueprint for bands like Tool, A Perfect Circle and especially Radiohead. But that was only the first listen. Definitely gonna check out PT and his solo work.
The music video is great. And the Opeth vibes are there because Steven explicitly wanted parts of the song to sound swedish. He told Guthrie Govan to play it with the feeling of a swede getting lost in the woods. Opeth takes alot of inspiration from swedish folk and Jan Johansson in particular. That's where the Opeth like elements come in. Those elements are actually older than Opeth.
This album blew my mind the first time I heard it. Few albums have changed the way I listen to music - as well as how I write music - as this one. The Lamb... By genesis is another. If you haven't Check put The Invisible Man by Marillion. Similar kinda vibe as Wilson's stuff - but at the same time very different.
Hey there, JustJP! I hope you are well! Thanks for your reaction to this beautiful track! Would there be a chance you might explore more of The Raven That Refused To Sing? It is a wonderful album, and one of the better modern prog rock albums out there, I'd say.
Thanks JP! Please more reactions to the music of Steven Wilson. Songs like: - "No Twilight Within The Courts Of The Sun" - "Significant Other" - "The Holy Drinker" - "The Watchmaker" - "First Regret - 3 Years Older" - "Routine" - "Home Invasion - Regret #9" - "Happy Returns - Ascendant Here On."
Beautiful tune! This is one of my favorite tunes of all time. The strings are magnificent. Even if this tune was stripped down to three instruments, it would still be good. Excellent composition and performance. This is what you play late at night when you have some exceptional bong stuffings.
Thanks JP! Genesis, the Steven Wilson of retro progressive rock! The Raven album contains the best music I’ve heard in many many years. Yes it’s probably not the best song to put on at a party (unless everyone’s stoned:). Fortunately other songs on this record are a little less 😭 and wonderfully complex musically like ‘Luminol’ and the ‘Holy Drinker’. So it all balances out. Pardon me, sidecar dog and I are going for a ride🏍 now. We’ve got to eh...drive home.
Really liked Bass Communion. Opening sounds like a lonely whale wandering in a vast empty ocean. Loved the guitar strumming at the end. With respect for SW, I have to rename this song “Music from a Dying Planet “, or “Last Day on Mars”.
I can see myself liking this song the more times i hear it. I like the guitar in this song and the pace allowed the guitar to stand out. Good choice. I like PT but only know a few songs for theirs, I'll have to pay more attention to SW and PT moving forward.
Nice ... reminiscent of early Genesis ... but can I suggest "Significant Other" by Steven Wilson .... and while I'm at it, check out "Stagnation" (or anything) from the Genesis album "Trespass" :) Love your work btw ... analysing and bringing new (old) tunes to a new audience. :)
Another SW fun fact. If you listen to any and all of his music from PT to solo to bass communion the one thing you'll notice is he has an utter disdain for vocals with any vibrato whatsoever. He expressly never uses it and insists his backups (Mr. Beggs) doesn't either. Not easy to do if you've been a singer your whole life. It actually takes a lot of control and restraint to not sing with it.
I've listened to S.W. & P.T. and thought they were OK, but probably wouldn't listen to either following what I heard. Then the other day, I wanted something new as backdrop music to balance my check book. Anyway, "In Absentia" came up on a Y.T. recommendation, so thought, "OK, I'll give 'em another listen". Listened to the first three songs and quit listening........so I could go and buy the album for download. Also bought "The Raven............" Love the title tack on that one. Really liking 'em this time round.
Love love love this album and song. Steve W is a huge fan on Steve Hackett, so the Genesis influence is certainly understandable. For some awesome Hackett, check out "Entangled" from the A Trick Of The Tail album. For some Wilson that will make you cry, I gotta echo the call for "Routine"" from Hand. Cannot. Erase. You may want to do both those with Manny. :-)
I'm slowly making my way through Steven Wilson's solo stuff, trying to savor it. Love this one. Note the musical reference to Pink Floyd's "Hey You" about halfway through the song. If you like Steven Wilson soundscapes, check out early Porcupine Tree -- Up the Downstair; The Sky Moves Sideways; Voyage 34. I'm checking out Bass Communion. Sounds like whale-song so far...
I'd like to be able to hear the music from your vantage point. I can tell that there is a lot going on sonically that I’m not picking up on my end. I'm trying to imagine what else is happening musically and will have check out the song again in HD. I assume you use video editing software to produce your videos. Have you considered importing the music audio to improve the overall quality of the sound? I checked out Bass Communion, too. Definitely not music to do house work to!
I've thought of it before; I'll keep working on that audio quality and making it the best I can :D And yeah, definitely not housework music lol! Headphones, dark room, eyes shut.
This was a great song. You're right, that classical influence came through, like in Genesis. My only negative... I thought the ending guitar work should've remained in a classical scale, but the guitarist chose a heavy metal type thing that, imo, took away from the overall beauty. Still fabulously creative and haunting. BTW, I checked out Drugged pt.1 by Bass Communion. Aside from the out of tune trumpet in the first 2-4 mins, it was really good. Reminded me of some of my own music. Check out Johnny Jewel who has a style much like that displayed in "Drugged". I like the LP "Windswept".Johnny Jewel is also a member of The Chromatics, another atmospheric journey worth taking. I like the song "Shadow".
Oh man, that trumpet is my favorite thing and how it builds from this slightly uneasy tone into this feeling of pure bliss. I'm listening to it again right now 😁
Love the Bass Communion song. I'm a huge PT nut. Especially the earlier psychedelic Floydian period. I discovered them around Signify when they were not well known at all and it's probably my favorite album of theirs. Check out Voyage 34 for one of the greatest space trips ever.

@@Ledones Routine is a gut punch. Seeing it live on that tour he used the video as a backdrop. I thought the whole theater was going to cry. Shivers.
Best part is the solo was improvised on the first take. Guthrie is a master. Thanks for checking it out!
I loved it; thank you for watching!
Like if Govan's improvisation level wasn't scary enough on his own songs

Yeah, My guitarist is trying to get me to take the dive on them and start listening to them. I will have to do just that.
Absolutely perfect. This is my favorite song actually.
Nice! Thanks for watching Carlos
This song is not complete without the amazing video..Video tells the whole story about this song.
The video is marvellous and really adds to the melancholy and beauty of the song.
the last porcupine tree album, The Incident, is an excellent example of Wilson's gorgeous melancholic rock. Love his work. Special guy.
