I believe they call this post progressive metal. But really they cover many genres. Sometimes they can be full out metal, sometimes they can be jazzy, most they fit into true progressive category as they are usually in an out of many sounds in the same song. Steven Wilson, the lead singer is also a phenomenal producer who has produced many albums outside of Porcupine Tree. He also has solo work that’s incredible. The drummer is by far one of the best around too. They have generally written concept type albums that have individual themes that run throughout. They are really one of the most creative bands out there.

As someone who listens to a lot of the stuff you react to and who likes rap, but is exceptionally picky within the genre, I think you guys need to check out Aesop Rock. He’s an underground legendary rapper and producer who, in my opinion, is very rock and roll. The song that introduced me to him was “Shrunk” off “The Impossible Kid, which was the very first album he handled entirely on his own. It’s three parts about a visit to his shrink. Filling out paperwork, waiting to be seen, and the visit itself. It’s brilliant.
