Benzine is the fruit of collaboration between musician-composers Farid Belayat and Samir Mohellebi, both based in Marseille. Their unique style, which they define as "Raï machine", skilfully combines elements of electronic music with the traditions of Algerian Bedouin poetry.
Motivated by their passion for Algerian Bedouin poetry, Farid and Samir set out to create contemporary poetry sung in the Bedouin style, offering an innovative perspective on this rich cultural heritage. They have enriched their sound by recording instruments typical of western Algeria and using them as sound samples.
Benzine's musical universe is a captivating mix of analog and digital electronics, where traditional rhythms blend harmoniously with bass and electric guitar sounds. Farid Belayat's haunting vocals, accompanied by Samir Mohellebi's backing vocals, take the listener on an immersive sonic journey, where the boundaries between past and present, tradition and modernity, blur to create something entirely new and intriguing.
