  • NOT GOOD ENOUGH! | Manchester United 2-2 Liverpool analysis
Liverpool's Premier League title hopes suffered a blow as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Manchester United at Old Trafford.
The Reds took a first-half lead thanks to Luis Diaz's strike but needed a late Mohamed Salah penalty to pinch a point after the hosts turned the game on its head.
Liverpool reporter David Lynch watched the action and felt Jurgen Klopp's side paid the price for wasteful finishing and a failure to win battles in midfield.
That means the front three all come in for criticism, while Alexis Mac Allister is the only man to get a pass mark in the engine room.
Check out this review of the game and let us know whether you still believe the Reds will go on to lift the title in the comments.

How are you feeling about Liverpool's title chances after today's draw?

    • @svlagonda7417

Even before today I said City were favourites. We look leggy (physically and mentally) and even against Sheff Utd, we could have been 0-2 down after 5 mins. It's this stage of the season that you need the 'big players' to step up, but there's not really anyone stepping up. Salah in particularly has been hugely disappointing. Utd were there for the taking but we couldn't go up the gears particularly at the end of the 1st half when they were there for the taking. Huge brain fart by Quansah but we looked good at times, bad at others, and surprisingly shakey as well.

Tell you what David, I'm really disappointed with that result today. We need to be winning games at this stage of the season. We have overperformed in reality, I don't think many fans envisaged a title push this season, but we are in it and we have to finish teams off and be more inventive and clinical. I personally think we are over passing in and around the opposition box also, hit it! I'm also fed up of us conceding early goals! Got away with that one today.
Looking forward to the returns of Trent and Jota, 7 games left and we're joint top (goal difference being an obvious factor) but the momentum has swung today. We're still in it but we need to improve in both boxes rapidly. One slip from Arsenal and we need to be taking advantage of it.

Plenty of football left to play and in a far better position than anyone expected back in the summer. People need to get some perspective IMHO, with a completely new midfield and all of our injury issues it's remarkable were still in the race with 7 games to go.

@David absolutely brilliant summary as always. But, it’s obvious to most of our fanbase: the League is done. We’re not winning the league guys. Sorry fanbase. I personally cannot see it. Didn’t really see it back from December really. Same old quality and finishing issues, poor buys imho being the root cause. They aren’t world class at all. Bang average and quite poor finishing. Mane and Firminio in the side - we would win today. If we had a Harry Kane level finisher upfront - we would be approx 6 points in front of Arsenal. Same ole issues all season - can’t put teams away. No killer edge. Nothing new.
You can’t win, won’t win the league with squandering that many chances and ultimately drawing too many games. We’ve been here before remember. We’re 3rd best, let’s be real. We can’t finish our dinner. Front 3 are too wasteful for winning a league title. If we end up in Europa League final and we face Bayer Lev, we are no way favourites. Not with our finishing. Let’s see where we get in Europa League.

He hasn’t been clinical, but not poor by any means. He does occupy the minds of the opposing defence, and stretch the field. The issue is putting chances away. The front three are all guilty of that. As great a Luis Diaz has been, he missed a lot of chances too that Sadio Mane would’ve put away. And if you substituted Nunez for Jota who’s injured, we could’ve still won the game. We miss #20

Feel sorry for Quansah, young lad made a big error. Good job Kelleher didn’t stop the goal as he was out of his area and might have got sent off. it's a disappointing result, but I am not in the least bit despondent for a very simple reason. it wasn't my expectation that they would be contesting the title in April. The best I was hoping for this season was top four. so in that sense, the team are overachieving.
for what it's worth, I agree, almost entirely with David's analysis except to say that if we had a forward line that could hit a barn door with the ball. I think that analysis would've been, overall, more positive.
I do though find some of the negativity in the comments, unfair. like every other football fan I have my own favourites on the team and I also have one or two whom I would rather play for somebody else, but I will say this for them, almost every last one of them puts in a serious shift we week in, week out. If you don't see the value in that, then you should ask some Manchester United fans what they would give if their players gave the levels of application which Liverpool players give every single week.
Perhaps that's part of the problem, Klopp, and I don't mean this as a criticism, works his players into the ground and today, they just looked a couple of percent short off their peak. And even then this is a game which still should have been won.
The pain point is definitely in the forward line. They need an astonishing number of chances to convert. Mohammed Sala looks like he is beginning to decline, Nunez is quite simply a bad finisher and Diaz isn't much better. That's not to say that these players don't put their shoulder to the wheel for the team they absolutely do, but they do not convert chances to goals at a rate that could be described as elite.
let's do our best to enjoy the rest of the season because we have been very fortunate with this team this year.

Dave,First and foremost we cannot keep clean sheets, there in lies a big problem in itself, I think Arsenal have won last five away from home not including city, without conceding they are best team out of the 3 at the moment in my opinion they are a machine, we have had 90 shots against United in last 3 games and not won any of them.we were masters of our downfall today, which is really disappointing,it can be looked upon as 1 point gained but it was 8 cup finals to play before kick off and everyone was a must win, given competency of other 2 teams. We have some real tricky games to come, and there is now nil tolerance for anymore slip ups. Konate should have started, and Slob needs resting not in good form in my opinion and really pleased Jota is close to return and Trent for that matter. The front line needs to be more clinical, otherwise there could be more dropped points.I think Europe could have a bearing on this run in and hope City and Arsenal meet each other in the semis for obvious reasons.

Spot on analysis as usual. For me Elliot has done enough to have a starting spot. He always gives the sense he's thinking clearly about the game and has been very good almost every time he's played. He may not have the physical attributes of Szobo or Gravenberch but neither is hitting the heights at the moment. If we had another 15 minutes with him on the pitch it felt like we might have got more from the game. As for Mo, he's been fine most of the season but has really been poor in the last couple of games. It seems hard to believe that if you're fasting from sunrise at this level it doesn't have an impact. But whatever, he shouldn't be undroppable. I'm sure I wasn't the only person terrified he was going to miss that penalty. Jota cannot come back too soon as we need options up top again.

I think we have seen today just how much Liverpools' attack is miss firing. For the number of shots and chances we had/created we should have been 4 or 5 ahead. The midfield, with the exception of Macca, were non existent, when Jones and Gakpo came on, we got worse. They couldn't pass or hold the ball up....I think we need a more clinical front line, MO has not fired on all cylinders for some time, Darwin finishing is abysmal and Diaz wouldn't release the ball early enough. We need an injection of fresh blood this summer, things haven't fired properly all season even though we are still.in with a chance to win the league.

Very disappointing, but not surprising because the finishing frailties have been there all season. In all the games Liverpool have dropped points the xG vs Actual goals metric is -5.58. It's not about the goals scored in winning games, it's all about the chances missed and dropped points......It won't be surprising to fans the culprits. A total of 12 points dropped against Arsenal, Man City, Man Utd home and away, all costly, but the dropped points against Utd unnecessary and ultimately very costly.

As a general observation there have been far too many 'going to the wire' games which Arsenal and Man City would have won comfortably in normal time That, plus huge injury list suggests the Klopp approach has its limitations.

There are still points to be won and dropped by all three in the title race, and we are doing far better than anybody would have thought at the start of the season, but on last night’s and other recent performances, i’m not having hope on the title unless the other two slip up in any way. For Arsenal that doesn’t look likely, while City arguable have the most favourable run in.
On the finishing, it’s hard to criticise the two players who scored the goals but I’ve thought for several games now, especially since Mo and Luis came back from their injuries, neither looks like wanting to take risks and are happier dancing around the edge of the box trying to pick the perfect top corner with their shot. This is too predictable and easy for defenders and keepers of PL quality to handle. We’re missing Jota’s bursts into the box and only Harvey showed that willingness to get into the mix by winning the pen last night. For several games now I’ve been screaming at Mo and Luis, in particular, to get the head down and get into the box - get a shot away or get a pen. Perhaps both are too cautious after have been turned by talk of interest by other clubs so want to keep injury free or perhaps they’re feeling the pressure and just trying to focus on what they think of their best game. Either way, they need to knuckle down, try something different, and see this season through or maybe should be allowed to move on.

Why didn't we sit back second half and defend that one goal lead and make them come out and attack us. Then we could hit them on the break. Forget the players not learning from the FA Cup defeat, Klopp didn't learn. They employed exactly the same tactics and we fell for it. I was pulling my hair out 2nd half when we employed a high line going for a second goal. Why oh why oh why. We didn't need to using a high line. We only needed to sit back, win the ball when they lost it outside our area and break on them for the 2nd goal. Why didn't Klopp do that. He played into their hands. Naive in the extreme.

David, we are really criticising players who don’t deserve it because of the disappointing result. Our issue was putting chances away and taking the fight out of United. That crowd would’ve completely turned against them had we done so. We miss Jota badly. And we miss the clinical nature of Sadio Mane and the composure of Firmino.
Luis Diaz has been great for us, don’t get me wrong. But he could’ve had a hat-trick. Mo Salah before the injury would’ve put one of the chances away. But his erratic nature and mistimed touches are nothing new. But the other two used to pick up the slack when it’s not his day. Nunez looked nervous all game to me. I believe he is substituted early if Jota is there and Gakpo is in much better form.
I was surprised by the Konate decision when the team news came out. Quansah played fairly well besides the mistake, but he’s not Ibou. We can’t squeeze United as much without his recovery pace.

I for once don't really agree with you Dave. I think Liverpool were great, but lacked that bit of luck and bit of composure. A team on the way up will have days like this. I think Arsenal and Citeh will both meet in the ECL, which will help us as that will be like 2 more very intense league games for them... I would imaging that all 3 of fo the top teams will drop more points. The Ev away won't be easy for us for example. I still think the reds will win but it will be a nail biter... probably goes to the last couple of fixtures. I thought Diaz, Elliot and Mac10 were our best today. Yes we could have won the game on another day we would hve, but this is a team on the way up... we will improve. Keep the faith! COYR!

Think it’s been a theme of games against Manchester United this season - no composure in the final third! Liverpool just have to win all seven from here to give themselves a chance, a few tough ones coming up though as you say! It could be the tightest title race ever.

Very disappointed. Should have had it wrapped up by half time. Always so many chances with very little conversion rate. Why Quansah? The boy is still 21. The real culprits are Salah, Nunez and Diaz. Their decision-making and finishing was piss poor. But, the real culprits are FSG for signing them and Klopp for not being able to set his team up for different phases of play. Surely, he can set the team up to manage a game and just muzzle the opposition the way Arse'nal have been doing recently.
