- Back on Karl after a short break back home...and quite a bit of work waiting for me. But before heading back to the Rio Dulce, I spent an exciting day in Guatemala City, cruising through the streets with Marcos from the hostel www.quetzalroo.... exploring art galleries, museums and great local food by bicycle! Try it out if you get the chance!
Back on Karl, Matthieu and me headded down to Texan Bay to see Rigger Tom to get a quote for replacing the standing rigg...
Ahoy, Nike & Karl

This is NOT a live documentary! There is a time difference between filming and publishing due to the time it takes to edit and to internet not always being awailable on those little remote palm tree islands :).

FYI - the crew of SV Delos changed their own rigging a while back. One strand at a time. They saved alot. I bet you can do it too. You seem to be able to do anything you set your mind to. I am often impressed and always admire your sense of adventure and resourcefulness. Be safe!
You started the film off in the city and we think that looks interesting then you get back to the boat and its just WOW how beautiful.
I did not expect bike paths in Guatemala City. The street food looks appetizing. Just lovely among the mangroves.
Very nice. I like the way you take us with you on your off-the-beaten-track adventures, places that most of us will never get to see.
5:52 That's some skill with a cast net!
Thank you Nike for these great videos that take us places that most of us will never get to see. Be safe.
Great episode and good to see that you're back! I'm hoping that we get to the warm weather soon as well. Take care!
Getting my boat ready for the summer all day here in Stockholm. Now, watching your videos. Can't get enough :) Great places you've been to in Central America.
Great video as always. I hope you realize what a great inspiration you are to many people around the world. Your videos are not only fun to watch but educational as well. Thank you for sharing your life with the youtube community and keep going on the great adventure!
Thank you for the great video. Guatemala is beautiful!
Absolutely gorgeous! And the scenery was very nice, too! Thanks for sharing.
It's so great that you are on my country. I love your videos. Hope to watch more of your adventures.
It is so great to see you aboard Karl again. It sounds like you decided to do the rigging yourself, frankly no surprise, you have overcome so many challenges successfully that I call you Super woman :) thank you for sharing.
Love your bike helmet. Reminds me of the ceremonial ones that the military police used to wear.
Loved that little mangroves exploration segment towards the end and very keen to watch you change the rigging, if you end up doing it yourself. You had better luck in Guatemala City than my mate and I when we drove down from San Diego on a six month surfing trip in 1992. We couldn't find our way anywhere, drove around in circles for about an hour, gave up and returned to the Pan American, where at least we knew which way was south.
i love watching your adventures, always a treat. and boy, did that street food ever look good! I could eat a few of those! Nice trip thru the mangroves too, very interesting.
Hi really enjoy your videos great escapism for me and a greta way to see the world. Karls come a long way from when you first got him and its a credit to you for all the hard work you put into it.
Pretty footage and we loved the transitions. I liked the music. Good luck with the rigging!
Many thanks for your reply about the cameras, Nike; happy sailing!! Peter
Thanks for another great video. I really enjoyed it.
Best of Luck to you and Karl.
You voice is so sweet, the video profesional and the music peace ful.
Nike you can save a little money but you will have to aloft to get the rigging down. But first you will have to find a supplier that can get you good stainless wire the right diameter and fittings to swage it if you don't use a mechanical end. also check the tangs at the mast very very carefully. Look for cracks and metal fatigue. If you doubt a tang replace it. And do not forget to run a support for the rigging wire you take down. You will have to do it one wire at a time as well. You got this girl.:-)
Beautiful scenery, we live on an amazing world! Love your videos and your sweet way of presenting your experiences. Safe sailing.
Thanks for sharing. You can do anything.
The mangroves look beautiful. Glad to see that Matthieu is still on board :)
+Two aboard Tuuli
not for long
Great video Nike! I gotta say that the coffee frothy lipstick suits you girl ;)
Good luck if you decide to do the rigging yourself.
Remember the El Niño is running hard across the Pacific this year. Have you thought about hanging around the caribbean, after Cuba?
What an exploration... some things just pay off....
Check out S/V Delos. they changed their own rigging to save on cost.
+Brian Davis. Begins at 61. SV Delos sailing.
Thanks, +Brian Davis, I am not sure if you know, but this documentary is not real time...so I already DID change it :). But thanks a lot!
Ahoy, Nike & Karl
+Brian Davis yes I was going to suggest watching the Delos videos also they saved 6000 US doing it them selves.
well, I think they have an Amel, right? 6.000$ is waaaay higher than the whole quote I got, hahaha. But still I managed to save quite a bit by doing it myself :)
Ahoy, Nike & Karl
+WhiteSpotPirates good for you
les acadians
I realy admire you for your adrenturous .great video as always .be safe.nick
great video, you are very resourcfull I'm sure you can change it your self .one strand at a time ,fair winds an safe travels,,paul
Hi,
You should really consider using HMPE rigging, also known as Dyneema. It is quite cheap as easily spliced. A factory (southern ropes) here in Cape Town makes and sell these for around 1.6euro per metre for 8mm line. Also much stronger than stainless. Southern Ropes also export to nearly anywhere in the world as far as I know.
I hope this helps.
Quick note, I changed out our rigging and it was easy! You might take a look at our RUclips video of the process. It's on our RUclips page listed in the "Boat Refitting Projects" as "Standing Rigging Replacement"
camera work and editing was very good this episode
Niki,,take care: A Houston woman described what it was like to be infected with the Zika virus during a trip to El Salvador over Christmas.Lizzie Morales told ABC's Houston station KTRK-TV that she spent a week experiencing the extreme fatigue, nausea and a large rash that covered her body."You have no strength or energy to sit down. You just want to lay down and sleep,"
Great video. Good luck with the rigging!
Do you experience much culture shock Niki, going from Germany to Guatemala City, then into a mangrove, in such short space of time? To say nothing of European living, to Guatemalan hostel, to life back on Karl is the same space of time!
Thank you
Karl's crew- I find the isolation of my sailboat is a seduction. Usually a bitter sweet pull. I'm guessing it's a white spot of mine. Your videos remind me of that but you never talk about what the stars do to you when you're there with Karl. Enjoying you travels very much while spending every penny getting Unbridled ready for spring. Hope you are well
You can do your own rigging with Norsman fittings, I did my own.
mi bello ♡Guatemala♡
you should try for St Pete , Florida
there a lot of sailors there that i am sure would help u fix up your boat
there a lot reasons to go there easy to get parts , lots of friendly people that would help u and show how to fix things
i do not live there ( i live in Wien now) any more but built sail boats there for 10 years .
You would not be the first person living the Sailors Dream there, that needed little help .
honestly , who would give this video 3 thumbs down . ? i dont understand that !
After watching what Delos went through with their rigging (cost, labor, etc.) I am anxious to see how you resolved the issue.
I enjoy your films !! Please can you tell me what make of camera you use? Peter
Hi +Peter Thorpe, you can find the cameras I use on my website whitespotpirates.com/faq/. If you have any questions beyond that, let me know :)
Ahoy, nike & Karl
Hi Nike. A friend of mine said his eyesight (nearsighted) improved a lot after taking up sailing. As we've seen you wear glasses sometimes, we were wondering if you have seen any improvement with your eyesight? Good luck with your adventure! :)
Hi +zhitgeist, not so far, no. Would be great if it did :)!
Ahoy, Nike & Karl
There are some great videos from ruclips.net/user/ProjectAtticus and
and ruclips.net/user/drakeParagon who are very helpful with the rigging
Hi love your video's and admire you for your adventurous spirit. The ups and downs that you go through keep us all interested. I must admit to a little confusion though. In your introductory header it says " a solo sailing adventure" but you seem to have a male companion with you most times. So has the trip changed to one with company. ? No need to answer if you do not wish but I am sure many people are asking the same question. If I missed the answer some where along the way I am sorry. keep the video's coming. good luck and regards from the UK.
+Gary C It's a solo sailing adventure with her boyfriend lol.
+Richard Blackdog
not any more, don't worry
+Gary C
don't worry, solo solo maybe ;)
Where are you heading after this? Do you think the Pacific during this season?
Hi +Donia Donovan, still hoping and dreaming...I would like to do a loop up to Mexico and then Cuba and back down to Panama. If that goes well, then..........:) :) :)
Ahoy, Nike & Karl
Geology rocks but Geography is where it's at
du machst dich Sorgen, man kann sehen!
Are there snakes and other nasty critters in the mangroves?
oh for SURE :)
